Mismatch of current intramedullary nails with the anterior bow of the femur.

OBJECTIVES: The anterior curvature of the femur affects intramedullary nail insertion, revision prosthesis design, and the biomechanics of the proximal femur. Two previous studies, using small numbers of femurs, determined femoral curvature and showed that it was significantly greater than that of the several intramedullary nails they evaluated. In this study, the curvature of 948 femurs (474 matched pairs) was determined and compared with current intramedullary nails. The correlation of femoral curvature to age, gender, femoral size, and race was also evaluated. SETTING: Museum skeletal coll

Structure of chordae tendineae in the left ventricle of the human heart.

The bicuspid (mitral) valve complex of the human heart consists of functional units which include the valve leaflets, chordae tendineae and the papillary muscles. The mechanical properties of these functional units depend to a large extent on the link between the muscle and the valve. This link is usually arranged in a branching network of avascular tendinous chordae composed of collagen and elastic fibres, which transmit contractions of the papillary muscle to the valve leaflets. In order to perform their function efficiently, the chordae have to possess a high degree of elasticity, as well a

Neural tension patterns during cervical spine rotation: diagnostic implications from a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical neural tension reflects the biomechanical and physiological responses of spinal nerves to positional changes. Although clinical tests exist for the lower cervical spinal nerve, tension patterns in the upper and mid-cervical nerves remain underexplored, limiting the diagnostic accuracy for conditions such as occipital neuralgia. METHODS: This cadaveric study quantified tensile load changes at the cervical spinal nerve level (C1-C5) during passive cervical spine rotation in five formalin-embalmed cadavers. Tension was measured on the cervical spinal nerves (C1-C5) using for

Suprascapular Artery Variability in a Zambian Cadaveric Population: Anatomical Observations and Their Clinical Significance.

Introduction The suprascapular artery typically arises from the thyrocervical trunk and traverses above the superior transverse scapular ligament (STSL). However, numerous variations in its origin and course have been documented, some of which may predispose individuals to suprascapular neuropathy or complicate surgical procedures of the neck and shoulder region. This study aimed to identify variations in the origin and course of the suprascapular artery in a Zambian cadaveric population. Materials and methods A descriptive cadaveric study was conducted over two years on 66 upper limbs from 33

Anatomical delineation of the tubarial gland amidst ongoing debate: Macroscopic study with microscopic validation and novel duct discovery.

Conflicting anatomical descriptions and functional interpretations have emerged regarding glandular structures located in the nasopharynx, particularly near the Eustachian tube. While some studies describe them as microscopic submucosal or tubal glands, others propose a distinct gland potentially salivary in nature. However, the majority of existing research has relied on imaging or histological analysis, with limited gross anatomical exploration. In view of these divergent perspectives and the paucity of macroscopic data, the present study aims to investigate this region through detailed cada

Clinical anatomy of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve: Is there any safe zone for interventional approach?

INTRODUCTION: The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is a somatosensory nerve coursing in the lateral portion of the forearm. The nerve is located in a close proximity to the cephalic vein (CV) all along its course with a danger of being injured during venipuncture. The LACN also overlaps and communicates with the superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) in the distal forearm and hand, making the awareness of their relationship of great importance in the treatment of neuroma. The aim of the study was to observe the relationship of the LACN to surrounding structures as well as its

A standardized, surgically relevant map for emergence of organ-specific branches from the human vagus nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Vagus nerve stimulation modulates airway, cardiac, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal functions through respective organ-specific branches. Knowledge of where along the nerve branches emerge could support alternative surgical placement of stimulation devices to activate targeted functions, while avoiding off-target effects. However, no quantified map of the emergence of vagal branches and their relationship to surgically relevant anatomical landmarks exists in humans. METHODS: Fifty-eight vagus nerves (29 left, 29 right) from 29 embalmed donor bodies (15 females) were dissected fro

The base of the coronoid as a reliable anatomical reference for elbow axis of rotation: evidence from a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Coronoid fracture characterization is crucial in treatment decision-making. The base of the coronoid is a fundamental reference used for fracture classification and to perform measurements to quantify fragment size, both of which guide the decision to proceed with surgical intervention. Furthermore, computed tomography used for fracture analysis relies on the acquisition of planar images aligned with specific anatomical axes, which should be referenced to the ulna rather than the humerus to minimize variability introduced by the flexion-extension positioning or ulno-humeral alignme

A New Perspective on the Cavernous Sinus as Seen through Multiple Surgical Corridors: Anatomical Study Comparing the Transorbital, Endonasal, and Transcranial Routes and the Relative Coterminous Spatial Regions.

Background: The cavernous sinus (CS) is a highly vulnerable anatomical space, mainly due to the neurovascular structures that it contains; therefore, a detailed knowledge of its anatomy is mandatory for surgical unlocking. In this study, we compared the anatomy of this region from different endoscopic and microsurgical operative corridors, further focusing on the corresponding anatomic landmarks encountered along these routes. Furthermore, we tried to define the safe entry zones to this venous space from these three different operative corridors, and to provide indications regarding the optima

Intraforaminal location of thoracolumbar anterior medullary arteries.

BACKGROUND: Transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a widely utilized interventional pain technique for radicular pain. Although the six o'clock position of the pedicle in the so-called "safe triangle" has been used as a target location, there have been a number of reported catastrophic complications of this procedure, including paraplegia. The mechanism of this has been attributed to the intravascular injection of steroids. The goal of this study was to examine the intraforaminal location of thoracolumbar medullary arteries which would help guide pain physicians in developing saf

The avascular plane of the Achilles tendon: a quantitative anatomic and angiographic approach and a base for a possible new treatment option after rupture.

INTRODUCTION: Achilles tendon ruptures, especially ruptures caused by pathologic conditions and also by achillotendinitis are often attributed to the alleged hypovascularisation of the Achilles tendon. Anatomic studies often mention an avascular plane. The purpose of this study was to re-investigate the arterial supply of the Achilles tendon. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lower legs of 28 anatomic specimen were injected with a radiologic contrast agent and subsequently an arterial angiography was performed. Afterwards the legs were embalmed and later anatomically dissected. The origin of arteries ent
