Posttraumatic growth modulates the response to negative emotions related to COVID-19: An event-related potentials study.

There is increasing interest in identifying how posttraumatic growth (PTG) impacts emotional processing following traumatic events (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic). Previous research suggests that high PTG levels may lead to enduring changes in positive emotional processing. Despite this fact, little is known regarding brain activation and responses to stressful emotional stimuli. The present study utilised event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether individual differences in emotional responses toward neutral and negative emotional stimuli related to COVID-19 are related to self-repor

Effects of different intervention methods on psychological flexibility, negative emotions and sleep quality in chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) experience various problems, including low psychological flexibility, negative emotions, and poor sleep quality. Therefore, effective nursing interventions are required to reduce adverse events. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) combined with enabling cognitive-behavioral education (ECBE) can improve patients' psychological and sleep. Therefore, we speculate that this may also be effective in patients with CHB. AIM: To investigate the effects of different intervention methods on psychological flexibility, negative emotions, and sleep q…

Eating cognitions, emotions and behaviour under treatment with second generation antipsychotics: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Weight gain and metabolic disturbances are frequent in people treated with second generation antipsychotics (SGA). We aimed to investigate the effect of SGAs on eating behaviors, cognitions and emotions, as a possible contributor to this adverse effect. A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Original articles measuring outcomes relating to eating cognitions, behaviours and emotions, during treatment with SGAs were included in this review. A total of 92 papers with 11,274 partic…

Analysis of risk factors for negative emotions in patients with severe pneumonia and their impact on prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Severe pneumonia (SP) is a common acute and critical illness in internal medicine, with typical symptoms such as cough, fever, generalized aches and pains, loss of appetite, weakness, and shortness of breath. Patients feel threatened by the disease and are prone to negative emotions, resulting in reduced compliance with treatment, which in turn affects treatment outcome. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors of negative emotions in patients with SP and their impact on prognosis, to provide a reference basis for improving the prognosis of patients. METHODS: We re…

School-aged children with higher anxiety symptoms show greater correspondence between subjective negative emotions and autonomic arousal.

Individuals exhibit variability in the degree of correspondence between autonomic and subjective indicators of emotional experience. The current study examined whether convergence between autonomic arousal and negative emotions during emotion-inducing story vignettes is associated with internalizing symptoms in school-aged children. A diverse sample of 97 children aged 8 to 12 years participated in this study in which they reported on their anxiety and depression. Children's electrodermal activity was assessed while they read vignettes depicting children experiencing sadness and fear. Particip…

The influence of feminist abortion accompaniment on emotions related to abortion: A longitudinal observational study in Mexico.

Emotions can reflect how individuals internalize identities, social roles, and broader power structures, including abortion stigma. Abortion accompaniment, in the form of logistical, informational, and emotional support offered by individuals and organizations, takes a person-centered, feminist, and rights-based approach. We tested the extent to which abortion accompaniment may decrease negative and increase positive feelings an individual holds related to their abortion. Using observational longitudinal data collected between January 2017 and mid-2018, we compared negative and positive emotio…

Do my emotions show or not? Problems with transparency estimation in women with borderline personality disorder features.

Transparency estimation, that is, estimating the extent to which one's mental states are observable to others, requires the simultaneous representation of the self and of others' perspective on the self. Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have difficulty integrating multiple perspectives when mentalizing, which may be reflected in impaired transparency estimation. A total of 62 participants high and low in BPD features watched emotionally evocative video clips and estimated the transparency of their emotional experience while facial expression coding software (FaceReader) q

Constructing and measuring domain-specific emotions for affective design: a descriptive approach to deal with individual differences.

Assessing design solutions via domain-specific emotions has been widely concerned and explored in the field of affective design. However, the examination and accommodation of individual differences have not been settled sufficiently in the literature. To address this research gap, this paper proposes a descriptive approach to draw calibrated collective emotion patterns in survey-based affective design assessment. A 'Repertory Grid Interview linked with Rate-All-That-Apply' (RGI/RATA) procedure is firstly conducted to elicit and code the individual's personal emotional descriptions into mid-lev…

Real Men Don't Cry: Skill Expressing Discrete Emotions Differentially Predicts Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Men and Women.

BACKGROUND: Expressing emotions effectively is central to social functioning and has links to health and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Previous work has linked the ability to smile to lower CVD risk in men but has not studied other expressions or considered the context of these skills. PURPOSE: To test whether the ability to express fear, anger, sadness, happiness, and disgust cross-sectionally predict CVD risk in both genders and whether links are moderated by the ability to decode others' emotional signals. METHODS: A community sample of 125 men and women (30-75 years) provided trait …

Negative Emotions and Job Burnout in News Media Workers: A Moderated Mediation Model of Rumination and Empathy.

News media workers are in stressful and competitive professions susceptible to negative emotions. Although the relationship between negative emotions and job burnout has been evidenced in some professional fields, it has not yet been examined in the population of news media workers. Far few studies have revealed the mediating and moderating mechanism between negative emotions and job burnout. Based on Resource Allocation Theory and Theory of Compassion Fatigue, this study examined (a) the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between negative emotions and job burnout, (b) the modera…

Neural responses to negative facial emotions: Sex differences in the correlates of individual anger and fear traits.

Studies have examined sex differences in emotion processing in health and illness. However, it remains unclear how these neural processes may relate to individual differences in affective traits. We addressed this issue with a dataset of 970 subjects (508 women) curated from the Human Connectome Project. Participants were assessed with the NIH Toolbox Emotion Measures and fMRI while identifying negative facial emotion and neutral shape targets in alternating blocks. Imaging data were analyzed with published routines and the results were reported at a corrected threshold. Men scored similarly i

Eight-month-old infants' behavioral responses to peers' emotions as related to the asymmetric frontal cortex activity.

Infants are sensitive to and converge emotionally with peers' distress. It is unclear whether these responses extend to positive affect and whether observing peer emotions motivates infants' behaviors. This study investigates 8-month-olds' asymmetric frontal EEG during peers' cry and laughter, and its relation to approach and withdrawal behaviors. Participants observed videos of infant crying or laughing during two separate sessions. Frontal EEG alpha power was recorded during the first, while infants' behaviors and emotional expressions were recorded during the second session. Facial and voca…
