We evaluated plasma atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), beta-endorphin, met-enkephalin, dynorphin and noradrenaline levels in 20 healthy subjects and 20 acute congestive heart failure (CHF) patients. In all acute CHF patients plasma values of these hormones were higher than in healthy subjects. The hormonal pattern differed in patients with the more severe acute CHF (group 1) from patients with less severe acute CHF (group 2) (ANF 53.8 +/- 1.0 vs 34.6 +/- 1.5 pg.ml-1, noradrenaline 563.8 +/- 13.4 vs 202.4 +/- 10.6 pg.ml-1, met-enkephalin 41.0 +/- 3.2 vs 17.0 +/- 1.6 fmol.ml-1, dynorphin 46.8 +/-

Epidural injections of 5 mg nicomorphine in 20 ml 5% glucose wee given to 10 gynaecological patients to provide intra-operative and post-operative analgesia. Signs of changed nociception appeared within 5 min. The maximum change occurred within 20 min. Effectiveness was at least 3 1/2 h. After an observation period of 30 min, light general anaesthesia is supplemented to give excellent operating conditions. It is suggested that opiates produce these effects by a direct action on the endorphin "pain" modulatory system of human beings at spinal level.

To clarify whether various neuropeptides found in the hypothalamus act directly on a pituitary adenoma causing Nelson's syndrome, we examined the influence of these peptides on the secretion of immunoreactive ACTH, beta-endorphin, and melanotropins, the proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides, by the cultured pituitary adenoma from a patient with Nelson's syndrome. BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is the basis of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a major adverse effect. CIPN has a high incidence rate and substantially affects the quality of life of cancer survivors. Despite this, no definitive treatment for persistent unmet medical needs is available. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), widely used to treat obesity and diabetes, have recently been reported to be efficacious in treating neuropathic pain.
