Biochemical and clinical studies on a patient with hepatic glycogen storage disease are reported. The patient showed many of the clinical and biochemical features of type I glycogenosis (glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency), but had normal activities of the following enzymes in liver tissue: glucose-6-phosphatase (EC3.1.3.9); amylo-1,6-glucosidase (EC3.2.1.33); glycogen phosphorylase (EC2.4.1.1); fructose-1,6-diphosphatase (EC3.1.3.11). Platelets of patients with thrombocytosis following splenectomy, in chronic granulocytic leukaemia and in polycythaemia vera were separated into five fractions by centrifugation in discontinuous Ficoll density gradient. Platelet volume, content of protein and enzyme activities of lactic dehydrogenase, phosphoglycerate kinase and glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase were distinctly higher for the three groups in the heavy fraction IV compared with the light fraction I. With regard to the platelet volume, however, these differences were compensated almost completely like in the normal persons.

Reported reductions in the activity of platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) in chronic schizophrenic patients might be contributed to by alterations in hormones, platelet numbers or other non-specific factors thought to affect enzyme activity. Zinc deficiency is associated with poor growth and development. It has been postulated that a deficiency of the various zinc metalloenzymes results from the lack of dietary zinc. Turkey liver xanthine dehydrogenase containing the full complement of molybdenum, flavin and iron-sulphur prosthetic groups is, as normally isolated, a mixture of functional and non-functional enzyme.
