In 1997, a nongovernmental surveillance group for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in Japan reported to the Ministry of Health and Welfare its analysis of a 1996 mail questionnaire survey of neurologic, psychiatric, and neuropathologic institutions throughout Japan. This analysis identified 829 patients with CJD diagnosed by physicians during January 1979-May 1996, including a large number (43 patients) who had received a cadaveric dura mater graft during a neurosurgical (42) or orthopedic (one) procedure during 1979-1991. This report presents a summary of features of these 43 cases, which indi

The purpose of the study described here was to investigate whether vinyl urinary leg and bed bags used for a 4-week period in the acute rehabilitation setting could be safely reused after having been decontaminated daily with a diluted bleach rinse. Rehabilitation patients who had bladder dysfunction and used vinyl urinary drainage bags (N = 88) were randomly assigned to control (C) and experimental (E) groups; 54 patients completed the study. Group C's bags were replaced weekly; group E's were replaced after 4 weeks. The bags of patients in both groups were decontaminated in identical fashion

Legionellas are present in water distribution systems and cooling towers of many hospitals. No firm data are available regarding the need for prophylactic disinfection of these contaminated systems. Disinfection of water systems and cooling towers is an accepted and effective means of ending nosocomial Legionnaires' disease, but it should be performed in conjunction with good epidemiological and microbiological studies to pinpoint environmental reservoirs and disseminators. Chlorination, pasteurization, or both, are the only means of disinfection found to be effective in disease outbreaks. Pro

Healthcare-acquired infections are a tremendous challenge to the US medical system. Stethoscopes touch many patients, but current guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not support disinfection between each patient. Stethoscopes are rarely disinfected between patients by healthcare providers. When cultured, even after disinfection, stethoscopes have high rates of pathogen contamination, identical to that of unwashed hands. The consequence of these practices may bode poorly in the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Alternatively, the CDC recommends the use

We report an outbreak of healthcare-associated prostatitis involving rare environmental pathogens in immunocompetent patients undergoing transrectal prostate biopsies at Hôpital Édouard Herriot (Lyon, France) during August 13-October 10, 2014. Despite a fluoroquinolone-based prophylaxis, 5 patients were infected with Achromobacter xylosoxidans and 3 with Ochrobactrum anthropi, which has not been reported as pathogenic in nonimmunocompromised persons. All patients recovered fully. Analysis of the outbreak included case investigation, case-control study, biopsy procedure review, microbiologic te

A new electrochemical immunosensor has been developed to detect sulfonamide antibiotic residues in food samples. The immunosensor presented uses immunoreagents specifically developed for the broad recognition of the sulfonamide antibiotic family, a graphite composite electrode (GEC), biofunctionalized magnetic μ-particles and electrochemical nanoprobes prepared by labeling the specific antibodies with CdS nanoparticles (CdSNP). After the immunochemical reaction, the CdSNP are dissolved and the metal ions released are reduced at the electrode and read as in the form of current or charge signal,

OBJECTIVES: To test the ability of a sensor developed to signal infection by the organisms that generate the crystalline biofilms that encrust catheters, to give an early warning that encrustation was occurring on patients' catheters, as the care of many patients undergoing long-term bladder catheterization is complicated by the encrustation and blockage of their catheters.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients were followed prospectively for the lifetime of one of their catheters. Sensors based on cellulose acetate/bromothymol blue were placed in the urine-collection bags, which were changed

INTRODUCTION: Globally, healthcare facilities face a great challenge in the form of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Aside from the morbidity and mortality they cause, these illnesses are also extremely costly. Research on infection transmission in the medical field has been considerable, but not so much in the radiology department.
AIM: This study aims to identify the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbes on surfaces that are frequently touched in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), plain X-ray examination rooms, and portable radiography

Persons who inject drugs are at high risk for skin and soft tissue infections. Infections range from simple abscesses and uncomplicated cellulitis to life-threatening and limb-threatening infections. These infections are predominantly caused by gram-positive organisms with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and other streptococcal species being most common. Although antimicrobial therapy has an important role in treatment of these infections, surgical incision, drainage, and debridement of devitalized tissue are primary. Strategies that decrease the frequency of injection drug use,

Monkeypox, caused by an Orthopoxvirus, poses a significant occupational risk to healthcare workers due to their frequent contact with infected patients and contaminated materials. This risk is increased by potential lapses in infection control protocols in hospitals, such as a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), improper hand hygiene, and other issues, making hospitals a key site for occupational transmission of monkeypox. The objective of the study was to evaluate monkeypox transmission among healthcare workers and identify critical preventive strategies. A comprehensive literature s

Cells exhibit remarkable sensitivity to the mechanical properties of their surrounding matrix, particularly stiffness changes, a phenomenon known as cellular mechanotransduction. In vivo, tissues exhibit a wide range of stiffness, from kilopascals (kPa) to megapascals (MPa), which can alter with aging and disease. Traditional cell culture methods employ plastic substrates with stiffness in the gigapascal range, which does not accurately mimic the physiological conditions of most biological tissues. Therefore, employing substrates that can be engineered to span a wide range of stiffnesses, clos

Canine distemper virus (CDV) can cause high morbidity and mortality in large felids and pose a significant threat to the conservation of captive and non-captive tiger (Panthera tigris). This study conducted in Thailand's wildlife stations aimed to assess the risks of CDV introduction to captive tiger populations. A stochastic quantitative risk assessment model was employed to determine the pathways and estimate the risk probabilities through humans, animal reservoirs, and fomites. The final risk probability of entry, obtained from a combination of six entry pathways, indicated that the absence

Bacteriophages are ubiquitous biological entities that profoundly influence microbiology research and biotechnology. Among coliphages, T1-like viruses (family Drexlerviridae) are notoriously known for their environmental stability and propensity to contaminate laboratory cultures and equipment. Despite this, the genomic features that may underlie their persistence and recurrent detection as laboratory contaminants remain insufficiently characterized. Here, we describe a novel T1-like bacteriophage, KanT1, identified as a recurrent contaminant emerging from environmental samples. Comparative ge

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) represents a major causative agent of diarrheal outbreaks in China. Transmission occurs through consumption of contaminated food or drinking water and through person-to-person contact, frequently resulting in clustered infections.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Between November 6 and 20, 2024, an outbreak of infectious diarrhea affected 344 students at a high school in Baisha County, Hainan Province. Comprehensive field epidemiological and environmental investigations, combined with laboratory testing, identified DE

Corrosive sulfur compounds and trace moisture were key factors causing the rapid deterioration of finished mineral oils. In power systems, insulating oil contaminated by such substances not only threatens the stable operation of power equipment but also transforms into hazardous waste due to performance degradation. This study innovatively developed a sulfur-modified TiO2-loaded SiO2 nanocomposite (S-nTDSGS) adsorbent, which was comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and specific surface area analysis. Using dibenzyldisulfide (DBDS) as

Elizabethkingia species are Gram-negative, glucose-non-fermenting bacilli predominantly found in soil and water, with Elizabethkingia anophelis increasingly recognized as a human pathogen. E. anophelis has also been reported in hospital outbreaks, suggesting the potential role of contaminated institutional water sources. Conventional microbiological methods often lead to misidentifying this pathogen for other members of the genus Elizabethkingia, suggesting a role for molecular methods for identification. We report a 67-year-old female who developed multiorgan failure requiring intensive care

The remediation of diesel-contaminated soil is a critical environmental concern, driving the need for effective solutions. Recently, the methodology of Non-thermal Atmospheric Plasma (NTAP) technology, which is equipped with a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) electrode and has become a feasible approach, was proven to be viable. The reactive species from the plasma were exposed to the contaminated soil in this investigation using the NTAP technique. The reacted soil was then extracted using dichloromethane, and the amount of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) removed was assessed. Investigati
