Retrograde effects of digital nerve severance on somatosensory evoked potentials in man.

To determine if retrograde conduction changes might occur long after injury of the most distal peripheral nerves, short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median or ulnar nerve stimulation at the wrist were studied in 10 subjects who had sustained traumatic digit amputation 4 months to 15 years previously. SEPs were recorded from Erb's point (N9), the cervical region (N13), and the contralateral scalp hand area (N20). While N9 latency was slightly delayed or not affected, the amplitude was either markedly reduced or undetectable. For N13 and N20 components, latency prolongation …

Visual evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis: frequency response shows reduced alpha amplitude.

Visual evoked potentials were measured in a group of 16 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and in a control group of 20 subjects. With respect to vertex and occipital recordings, latencies of main peaks were prolonged and response amplitudes were reduced in the MS group. As a result of frequency domain analysis we found that the amplitude reduction was not uniform in all frequency ranges: alpha (7-12 (Hz) components of EPs were markedly reduced whereas theta (4-7 Hz) responses were not altered. It is remarkable that the frequency components were altered to a different degree--this may shed some …

Differences in human evoked potentials related to olfactory or trigeminal chemosensory activation.

The aim of the present study was to determine, whether there are differences in the topographical distribution of chemosensory evoked potentials (CSEPs) due to stimulation with different odorous substances. The odorants used in the study which mainly excited the olfactory nerve were vanillin and acetaldehyde; those which additionally excited the trigeminal nerve were sulphur dioxide and ammonia. Twelve subjects participated in the study. The subjects separately estimated the intensity of the odorous and of the painful/pricking sensation caused by the stimuli, and described the odorous qualitie…

Value of brainstem acoustic evoked potentials in posterior fossa tumours in childhood.

Brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEPs) were measured in 14 children with different type of posterior fossa tumours several times during the clinical course, in order to assess the value of this simple and non-invasive method in the diagnosis and follow-up of posterior fossa tumours in childhood. Eight children had midline medulloblastoma, three children had lateral astrocytoma, three had intrinsic brainstem glioma. Different BAEP patterns could be detected in different tumour's type: bilateral symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical I-V. IPL prolongation in midline medulloblastomas, unilate…

[Auditory brain stem evoked potentials of average latency in dyslexics and controls].

The goal of this paper was to study the auditory pathway of nine controls and nine pure dyslexic subjects using brainstem auditory evoked responses and middle latency responses. We found no differences in latency and amplitude between both groups; only a small difference in the V right/V left relation in favour of the right V wave in controls and left V wave in dyslexics. This findings is discussed in relation to cerebral dominance.

The effect of intrathecal morphine on somatosensory evoked potentials in awake humans.

Although the effect of systemic opioids on somatosensory evoked potentials has been well described, little is known about the interaction between intrathecally administered opioid analgesics and somatosensory evoked potentials. Accordingly, the influence of intrathecally administered morphine on posterior tibial nerve somatosensory cortical evoked potentials (PTSCEPs) was investigated in 22 unpremedicated, awake, neurologically normal patients scheduled to undergo elective abdominal or pelvic procedures. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either preservation-free intrathecal morphine s…

Sensory-evoked potentials in rats chronically exposed to trichloroethylene: predominant auditory dysfunction.

Sensory-evoked potentials (EPs) were studied in male Long-Evans and Fischer-344 rats in order to characterize the electrophysiological consequences of chronic inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE). Groups of ten Long-Evans rats were exposed to air or 1600 ppm or 3200 ppm TCE for twelve weeks and evaluated periodically with a multisensory test battery. Brainstem auditory-evoked response (BAER) amplitudes were depressed by TCE, whereas somatosensory and visual potentials remained normal. The effects on BAERs, which varied with tone intensity and frequency, suggested that TCE causes a pr…

Amplitudes of somatosensory evoked potentials reflect cortical hyperexcitability in antidepressant-induced myoclonus.

During treatment with therapeutic dosages of cyclic antidepressants, 2 patients experienced reversible myoclonus. These episodes were accompanied by enlarged cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). We suggest that SEP amplitudes reflect modifications of cortical excitability during antidepressant treatment.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in icteric fullterm newborns: alterations after exchange transfusion.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were studied in five fullterm newborns before and during an exchange transfusion (ET) for hyperbilirubinemia and 1, 24, 48 hours after, in order to evaluate the changes of BAEP following acute decreases in bilirubinemia. Hyperbilirubinemia was due to ABO incompatibility. The newborns were free of other risk factors known to alter BAEP. In comparison with our normal laboratory data, we observed significant differences in pre-ET recordings for latencies I and V (p less than 0.01), and for interpeak latency V-III (p less than 0.01). After ET, there was …

Preservation of evoked potentials in a case of anterior spinal artery syndrome.

A case of anterior spinal artery syndrome is presented for which there are neurologic, electrophysiologic, and pathologic correlations. Ten days prior to her death, a 52-year-old hypertensive female developed severe chest pain and lower extremity weakness. A diagnosis of aortic dissection resulting in an anterior spinal artery syndrome was made. Intraoperative posterior tibial somatosensory evoked potentials demonstrated normal morphology and latencies. Autopsy revealed an infarction of the anterior portion of the thoraco-lumbar spinal cord with preservation of the posterior columns. This case…

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in children with migraine: a correlation analysis.

Visual potentials evoked by pattern reversal (PRVEPs) were studied in 64 normal children (age range 7 to 15 years) and in 20 age-matched patients with common and complicated migraine (age range 6 to 16 years). Most of them were studied before and during prophylactic therapy. A Quadristim set (Alvar) was used to present checkerboard patterns on a TV monitor, to amplify the EEG signals and to average and plot the evoked potentials. The potentials were elicited by binocular full-field 2/s checkerboard reversal, recorded from an electrode 4 cm above the inion, and analyzed for latency, amplitude a…

[Prognostic evaluation of severe brain damage by auditory brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs)].

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs) reflect activities of the brainstem auditory pathway and the influence of activities of structures surrounding the pathway. It is said that BAEPs are reliable in predicting the outcome of patients with severe brain damage. The author studied the relationship between initial BAEP findings, particularly interpeak latencies of waves I to V and waves III to V, and mortality as based on the cause of each disorder. BAEPs were sequentially recorded in 241 cases of various neurological diseases resulting in severe brain damage (GCS less than 8) during the f…

Short- and long-latency median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials in stroke patients.

Short- and long-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were elicited by stimulation of the median nerve in 104 stroke patients, 59 men and 45 women. Their ages ranged from 25 to 90 years, with a mean age of 68 years. All of the patients presented with acute unilateral motosensory or sensory deficits. Based on CT findings, the patients were divided into four groups: thalamic hemorrhage (52 cases), thalamic infarct (21 cases), putaminal hemorrhage or infarct (13 cases) and infarction in the corona radiata or subcortical white matter (18 cases). The criteria for abnormal SEP responses wer…

[Somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with lesions of the trigeminal nerve system].

These are results of comparison of clinical data and parameters of early components of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) in patients with various pathological disorders in the trigeminal nerve system. The investigations evidenced that neurologic patients have different degrees of disorders in structural-functional organization of trigeminal nerve system resulting from the disease itself and previous therapeutic interventions. Some of the peculiarities of SSEP changes, e.g., their amplitude and/or temporal asymmetry under stimulation of the sites of intact and afflicted sides of the face a…

Spinal cord evoked injury potentials in patients with acute spinal cord injury.

Six patients were examined in the acute stage of spinal cord injury, between 11 h and 12 days posttrauma. Quadripolar epidural electrodes were positioned either percutaneously using a Tuohy needle or directly into the epidural space during surgical intervention. These electrodes were combined with a common reference to obtain monopolar recordings of spinal cord evoked potentials resulting from either median nerve stimulation at the wrist or tibial nerve stimulation at the popliteal fossa. Spinal cord evoked injury potentials (SCEIPs), stationary potentials with positive polarity on the distal …

Spinal somatosensory evoked potentials in infants and children with spinal cord lesions.

Spinal somatosensory evoked responses to peroneal nerve stimulation were examined in 23 control subjects and 8 patients with pathological lesions of the spinal cord or peripheral nerve. In the control subjects, the response was found as a triphasic potential increasing in latency rostrally at the lumbar spinous recording location. Another negative potential following this triphasic potential appeared at the L1 to T10 spinous recording locations, which might reflect synaptic and/or post-synaptic activity in the spinal cord. This negative response then progressively increased in latency rostrall

Binaural interaction in brainstem auditory evoked potentials elicited by frequency-specific stimuli.

The frequency specificity of the binaural interaction in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) was investigated in ten normal-hearing young adults. A novel stimulus paradigm was devised to reduce the influence of the acoustic reflex (middle ear muscle contraction) on the BAEP, and to minimize the effect of variations in noise level. Sequences of six stimuli (rarefaction clicks or Gaussian-shaped tone pulses with carrier frequencies of 1, 2, 4 and 6 kHz) were periodically presented in the following order: right monaural, left monaural, binaural, left monaural, right monaural, binaural, wi…

Evoked potentials in basilar artery thrombosis: correlation with clinical and angiographic findings.

In 28 patients with vertebro-basilar or basilar artery thrombosis brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) have been recorded. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded in 7 of these 28 patients. In 24 patients the diagnosis was angiographically proven and in 4 patients Doppler sonography and computerized tomography suggested this diagnosis. The BAEP and SEP findings were correlated to clinical and angiographical signs. BAEPs could be classified into 6 different patterns. In more than half of the patients different BAEP patterns from the two …

[Cortical and subcortical somatosensory evoked potentials to median nerve stimulation in man].

In order to define the precise locations of precentral and postcentral gyri during neurosurgical operations, somatosensory evoked potentials to contralateral median nerve stimulation were recorded from the cerebral cortex in 19 cases with organic cerebral lesions which located near the central sulcus. In addition to that, distribution patterns of early components of SEPs were displayed by Nihonkoden Atac 450 in 3 cases who had bone defects after wide decompressive craniectomy but were without any sensory disturbances In 4 cases, in whom deep electrodes were inserted for the stereotaxic operati…
