EBCatch: A label-free electrochemical biosensor for non-invasive at-home monitoring of viral infection and infectivity via exhaled breath condensate.

The ongoing threat of emerging "Disease X″, exemplified by SARS-CoV-2, emphasizes the urgent need for non-invasive, rapid, and accurate diagnostic platforms suitable for home use. Here, we present EBCatch, an integrated system for the label-free electrochemical detection of respiratory viruses directly from exhaled breath condensate (EBC). The platform combines a semiconductor-based condenser for efficient EBC collection within 1 min, a carbon nanotube-based electrochemical biosensor functionalized with ACE2 receptors for specific virus recognition, and a smartphone application for automated r

Exhaled breath analysis with the use of an electronic nose to predict response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with metastatic melanoma: melaNose trial.

INTRODUCTION: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly improved the overall survival for patients with different solid tumors. However, there is an urgent need for predictive biomarkers to identify patients with metastatic melanoma who do not benefit from treatment with ICIs, to prevent unnecessary immune related adverse events (irAEs). Electronic noses (eNoses) showed promising results in the detection of cancer as well as the prediction of response outcome in patients with cancer. In this feasibility study, we aimed to investigate whether the breath pattern measured using eNose

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) among elementary school children in Stockholm: Associations with asthma, allergies, and home and school environment.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated links between fraction exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), the home and the school environment. FeNO is a biomarker of T helper 2 (Th2) airway inflammation. We investigated associations between FeNO and airway symptoms, allergies, household and classroom exposure among pupils in ten primary schools in Stockholm (N = 415). METHODS: Information on health and household environment was obtained by a questionnaire. FeNO was measured at school. Particle mass (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, and relative air humidity (RH) were measured in the c

Improvements in Exhaled Partial Pressure Carbon Dioxide After Interventional Bronchoscopy: Two Case Reports of Malignant and Benign Bronchial Obstruction.

Bronchial obstruction disrupts gas exchange, thus leading to a ventilation-perfusion mismatch. This report presents two cases demonstrating the utility of intrabronchial capnography in the management of airway obstruction. In case 1, stenting for recurrent lung cancer rapidly increased left lung perfusion from 13% to 59% with normalized carbon dioxide levels and improved imaging. In Case 2, tuberculosis-induced obstruction required secondary intervention, thus gradually increasing perfusion from 7% to 28% over time. Both cases highlighted the role of capnography in detecting airway collapse, a

Levels of Exhaled Fraction of Nitric Oxide (FeNO) and Type 2 Biomarkers in Individuals Naturally Exposed to Helminth Parasites in a Tropical Region.

The exhaled fraction of nitric oxide (FeNO) is a biomarker of type 2 inflammation, reflecting the activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the bronchial epithelium in response to IL-4 and IL-13. Elevated FeNO levels support asthma diagnosis; however, it is unclear whether active helminth infections and rural environments influence this biomarker. The aim of this study was to compare FeNO levels among subjects naturally infected with helminth parasites and to evaluate their correlation with eosinophil counts and other inflammatory mediators. A total of 275 adult asthmatic patients

Utilizing nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine co-doped carbon dots as a fluorescent probe for determination of vancomycin in exhaled breath condensate.

Vancomycin is employed to treat infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. Ensuring precise vancomycin dosages is essential to avoid the emergence of bacterial resistance. In the current study, a fluorescent nanoprobe was designed for vancomycin determination in exhaled breath condensate samples. The nanoprobe was based on carbon dots (CDs) doped with nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine (NSPCl-doped CDs). Vancomycin significantly reduced the fluorescence of NSPCl-doped CDs and presented a quenching process in the analytical response of the probe within a concentration range of 0.01-2.

Predictive Value of Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) in the Diagnosis of Asthma for Epidemiological Purposes-An 8-Year Follow-Up Study.

UNLABELLED: At the population level, respiratory symptoms in children can be estimated cross-sectionally. However, such methods require additional objective support parameters, such as the measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). The aim of the present study was to analyze if the FeNO value measured at baseline can have a predictive value for asthma-like symptoms after 8 years of measurement. METHODS: The follow-up included 128 (out of 447) children, 70 girls and 58 boys. The FeNO was measured at baseline only. The prevalence of asthma-like symptoms was measured with the adopted

Quantification of exhaled propofol is not feasible during single-lung ventilation using double-lumen tubes: A multicenter prospective observational trial.

BACKGROUND: Volatile propofol can be measured in exhaled air and correlates to plasma concentrations with a time delay. However, the effect … was sampled every 20 min. To eliminate the influence of dosing on volatile propofol concentration, exhalation rate was normalized to plasma concentration. RESULTS: In-vitro ventilation of double-lumen tubes resulted in increasing propofol concentrations at the distal end of the tube over time. In vitro clamping the bronchial lumen led to an even more prono …

Effectiveness of exhaled nitric oxide for the prediction of non-invasive left atrial pressure in older people: a cross-sectional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During left-sided heart failure (HF), left atrial and pulmonary venous pressure increase, which may lead to pulmonary congestion. Previous cohort studies, examining participants with symptomatic HF or rheumatic heart disease, suggest a relationship between increased left atrial pressure (LAP) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). AIM: To examine the strength of association between FeNO and echocardiographic assessment of LAP by the E/e' ratio, to determine if FeNO could be used to identify those with elevated LAP. DESIGN & SETTING: This cross-sectional cohort study examined

Exhaled nitric oxide is associated with inflammatory biomarkers and risk of acute respiratory exacerbations in children with HIV-associated chronic lung disease.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic lung disease is a recognized complication in children with HIV. Acute respiratory exacerbations (ARE) are common among this group and cause significant morbidity. Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) is a known marker of local airway inflammation. We investigated the association between eNO and ARE, biomarkers of systemic inflammation, and the effect of azithromycin on eNO levels. METHODS: Individuals aged 6-19 years with HIV-associated chronic lung disease in Harare, Zimbabwe, were enrolled in a placebo-controlled randomized trial investigating the effect of 48-week azithromycin tr

Development and validation of a predictive model combining patient-reported outcome measures, spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide fraction for asthma diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Although asthma is a common disease, its diagnosis remains a challenge in clinical practice with both over- and underdiagnosis. Here, we performed a prospective observational study investigating the value of symptom intensity scales alone or combined with spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide fraction (F ENO) to aid in asthma diagnosis. METHODS: Over a 38-month period we recruited 303 untreated patients complaining of symptoms suggestive of asthma (wheezing, dyspnoea, cough, sputum production and chest tightness). The whole cohort was split into a training cohort (n=166) for patie

The miRNA-24, miRNA-21 expressions and matrix metalloproteinase-7 level in exhaled breath condensate of children with primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Bullous lung diseases may cause primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) in children. The microRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that participate in regulation of inflammation and cancer. We hypothesized that children with bullous lung disease and PSP may have altered miRNA expressions in their exhaled breath condensates (EBCs). Therefore, a prospective study was performed to evaluate the miRNA-24 and 21 expression, and the matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) levels in EBC of children with PSP. Children with PSP were evaluated for age, gender, clinical features and results of surgical treatment.

Evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in patients with suspected asthma: study protocol for a prospective diagnostic study.

INTRODUCTION: The measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is promising for diagnosing asthma and might substitute for bronchial provocation (BP) tests. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FeNO within a confirmatory study, the following hypotheses will be tested: (1) A FeNO cut-off >50 ppb (parts per billion) is suitable for diagnosing asthma (sensitivity 35%, specificity 95%); (2) If the clinical symptoms 'allergic rhinitis' and 'wheezing' are present, asthma can be diagnosed at FeNO >33 ppb with a positive predictive value (PPV) >70% and (3) A FeNO >33 ppb can predict respons

A short perspective on a COVID-19 clinical study: 'diagnosis of COVID-19 by RT-PCR using exhale breath condensate samples'.

Diagnosis of SARS-COV-2 infection (COVID-19) is currently based on detection of the viral RNA in nasopharyngeal swab samples by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). However, sampling via nasopharyngeal swabs frequently provokes sneezing or coughing, which results in increased risk of the viral dissemination and environmental contamination. Furthermore, the sensitivity associated with the PCR tests s limited to 60%-70%, which is mainly attributable to technical deficiency in sampling. Given that the disease is transmitted via exhaled aerosol and droplets, and that the exhal
