A 10-mo-old female eland (Taurotragus oryx) at the Wilds exhibited recalcitrant, progressive unilateral uveitis for a 5-wk period, despite constant medical treatment. We report a ciliary body melanoma that apparently arose from a melanocytoma in a 15-year-old black teenager. The eye was enucleated, and metastatic evaluation remained negative at 5 years' follow-up. This unusual case, confirmed histopathologically, reveals that young patients with melanocytoma can have malignant transformation at an early age.

BACKGROUND: We present our experience in treating ocular melanoma at the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery in Sheffield, UK over the last 20 years.
METHOD: We analysed 170 patients treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery, recorded the evolution of visual acuity and complication rates, and compared their survival with 620 patients treated with eye enucleation. Different peripheral doses (using the 50% therapeutic isodose) were employed: 50-70 Gy for 24 patients, 45 Gy for 71 patients, 35 Gy for 62 patients.

We analysed histologically two Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) eyes with anterior and posterior segment inflammation and blindness. Two enucleated eyes of 2 patients (age 45 and 51y) with AK (PCR of epithelial abrasion positive) were analysed. Histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid-Schiff and Gömöri-methenamine silver staining. We could not observe Acanthamoeba trophozoites or cysts neither in the cornea nor in other ocular tissues. The purpose of this study was to report on a case of Terson's syndrome (TS) using a novel instrument and technique to harvest posterior pole pathology from a postmortem eye. A modified ocular clamp was used to remove the posterior pole from the postmortem enucleated eye. A 14-month-old boy had a microphthalmic left eye. An anterior chamber paracentesis was performed six days after examination under anesthesia. Lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) level in the aqueous humor was 1,158 mu and was 202 mu in the serum. The aqueous humor/serum LDH ratio was 5.73. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty nine keratoplasties were performed in 18 eyes of 17 patients with severe corneal destructive disease.
RESULTS: One eye became phthisical and 5 others lost useful visual acuity but retained a satisfactory cosmetic result. No eyes were enucleated. Recurrence of the host disease in the graft was the largest cause of visual failure. Primary allograft rejection was rare in spite of the large size of the grafts and their proximity to the limbus and new vessels.
CONCLUSION: For these grafts to succeed it is essential to bring the underlying systemic disease under control

Between 1983 and 1986, six eyes with diffuse malignant melanomas of the anterior uvea were enucleated at the Eye Hospital of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Twenty-two cases with carcinomas of the nasal cavity, sinuses, buccal and orbital regions treated in the Radiotherapy Clinic of University Central Hospital in Turku, are presented. PURPOSE: To review the long-term experience of helium ion therapy as a therapeutic alternative to enucleation for uveal melanoma, particularly with respect to survival, local control, and morbidity.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: 347 patients with uveal melanoma were treated with helium ion RT from 1978-1992. A nonrandomized dose-searching study was undertaken, with doses progressively reduced from 80 GyE in five fractions to 48 GyE in four fractions, given in 3-15 days, mean of 7 days.

PURPOSE: Diffuse anterior retinoblastoma is an exquisitely rare variant of retinoblastoma in which the tumor resides in the anterior segment of the eye, without apparent retinal involvement. Previously published cases have been managed with enucleation. We describe globe salvage and visual preservation in 3 consecutive cases using chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Self-enucleation, also known as Oedipism, is a rare form of ocular trauma. The objective of this clinical case report is to highlight the importance of diagnosing this unusual injury and thus ensuring its appropriate management. We evaluated in 7 eyes the mobility of a newly designed orbital implant made of hydroxyapatite.
