A double-blind crossover study comparing sodium cromoglycate eye drops with placebo in the treatment of chronic conjunctivitis.

In a placebo controlled double-blind crossover study, 60 patients with chronic non-infections conjunctivitis were treated for 4 weeks with either sodium cromoglycate eye drops or with placebo followed by 4 weeks on the alternative treatment. The dose was one drop into each eye 4 times daily. The scores for a number of symptoms and signs were significantly lower after 4 weeks sodium cromoglycate treatment than after similar placebo treatment. In both the patients' and clinician's opinion significantly more patients responded to the active treatment than to the placebo treatment. At the end of t

Long-term clinical, microbiological, and immunological observations of a volunteer repeatedly infected with Chlamydia trachomatis.

A blind volunteer was inoculated in one eye with an isolate of Chlamydia trachomatis in 1961 and followed for 20 years. During this time, many observations were made of his clinical responses to the first inoculation and several subsequent inoculations with the same and other strains, chlamydial shedding, and antibody and cell-mediated immune responses. Evidence is presented that partial resistance to chlamydial eye infection developed during repeated infections and that antibodies, cell-mediated immune reactions, and specific antigen in conjunctival cells persisted for many years after the la

Xerophthalmia, protein-calorie malnutrition, and infections in children.

All children with evidence of xerophthalmia who were admitted to an inpatient facility for treatment of severe protein-calorie malnutrition and its complications were compared to other inpatients with severe PCM but free from signs or symptoms of vitamin A deficiency. Xerophthalmic inpatients were older and had more severe hypoproteinemia than inpatients without eye signs, and were more undernourished by anthropometric criteria than a comparison group matched for age, sex, and type of PCM. Children with more severe eye lesions were more retarded in growth than those with minimal ocular signs.

Cyclopentenylcytosine (CPE-C): In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation as an Antiviral against Adenoviral Ocular Infections.

Adenoviruses are the major cause of ocular viral infections worldwide. Currently, there is no approved antiviral treatment for these eye infections. Cyclopentenylcytosine (CPE-C) is an antiviral that has demonstrated activity against more than 20 viruses. The goals of the current study were to determine the in vitro and in vivo antiviral activity of CPE-C as well as its ocular toxicity. Antiviral activity was evaluated in vitro using standard plaque reduction assays to determine the 50% effective concentrations (EC50s) and in vivo in the Ad5/NZW rabbit ocular replication model. Ocular toxicity…

Ocular pathological changes in hamsters experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Ocular lesions have been reported in patients with schistosomiasis; however, the problem with studying schistosomal infection of the human eye is that biopsies are almost impossible to take, and histopathological examination of suspicious lesions can only be undertaken post-mortem or after enucleation. This work aimed to study the possible effects and pathogenesis of schistosomiasis on the eye. This study involved 55 hamsters; five hamsters remained non-infected and the remaining 50 hamsters were infected with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. Infected hamsters were sacrificed on weeks 8, 12, 16

Exploring Heparanase Levels in Tears: Insights From Herpes Simplex Virus-1 Keratitis Patients and Animal Studies.

PURPOSE: Heparanase (HPSE) cleaves heparan sulfate proteoglycans during herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) infection, aiding in viral egress and disease progression. Its action has been well established in in vitro and in vivo models, but its relevance in human patients remains unclear. This study aimed to specifically evaluate tear HPSE levels of patients with herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) and to correlate these findings with a commonly used murine model. METHODS: Tear samples from patient and mice samples were collected at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India, and at the University of Ill

C. mastitidis requires the protein Sortase F to colonize the eye.

The ocular surface is a mucosal tissue that is constantly exposed to environmental antigens and potential pathogens. Human microbiomes play a critical role in the balance of surveillance and inflammation at sites of colonization. Historically, the investigation of the ocular microbiome has been difficult due to its paucibacterial nature and the inhospitable environment of the ocular surface. Despite this, Corynebacterium mastitidis ( C. mast ) developed a unique ability to colonize the eye and elicit a protective immune response characterized by induction of IL-17 from γδ T cells and protectio
