Alterations in neural processing of emotional faces in adolescent anorexia nervosa patients - an event-related potential study.

The present study explored the neurophysiological correlates of perception and recognition of emotional facial expressions in adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) patients using event-related potentials (ERPs). We included 20 adolescent girls with AN and 24 healthy girls and recorded ERPs during a passive viewing task and three active tasks requiring processing of emotional faces in varying processing depths; one of the tasks also assessed emotion recognition abilities behaviourally. Despite the absence of behavioural differences, we found that across all tasks AN patients exhibited a less pronoun

Oral Contraceptives Modulate the Relationship Between Resting Brain Activity, Amygdala Connectivity and Emotion Recognition - A Resting State fMRI Study.

Recent research into the effects of hormonal contraceptives on emotion processing and brain function suggests that hormonal contraceptive users show (a) reduced accuracy in recognizing emotions compared to naturally cycling women, and (b) alterations in amygdala volume and connectivity at rest. To date, these observations have not been linked, although the amygdala has certainly been identified as core region activated during emotion recognition. To assess, whether volume, oscillatory activity and connectivity of emotion-related brain areas at rest are predictive of participant's ability to re

Is Asymmetry the New Perfect? Redefining Beauty with Artificial Intelligence.

INTRODUCTION: This study challenges the traditional dominance of facial symmetry as the gold standard of beauty by exploring facial asymmetry's role in contemporary aesthetics. While symmetry has historically been associated with genetic fitness and attractiveness, evolving societal standards suggest growing recognition of asymmetry as a distinct aesthetic feature. This research aims to investigate whether facial asymmetry can play a positive role in beauty perceptions, especially across different demographic groups, and examines the influence of cultural norms, social media trends, and genera

Blunted neural response to positive facial feedback and suicidal risk in patients with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit a blunted neural response to happy (relative to neutral) facial feedback, indicated by attenuated feedback-related negativity (FRN). However, the relationship between FRN and suicide risk remains unclear. METHODS: The study included 110 MDD patients and 70 healthy controls (HCs) who completed an electroencephalogram social incentive delay task. According to the suicide risk module of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), patients were divided into low-suicide-risk (LSR, n = 34), moderate-suicide-risk (MSR

An ALE meta-analysis of the neural evidence of facial emotion processing in autism.

OBJECTIVE: Facial emotion recognition is central to successful social interaction. People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in this area. However, neuroimaging evidence on facial emotion processing in ASD has been diverse. This study aims to identify common and consistent brain activity patterns during facial emotion processing in autism. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, 22 fMRI studies (539 ASD, 502 typically developing participants (TD) were included. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant activation in the right fusiform gyrus (FG) and left fusiform face area (FF

Differential precuneus and frontal activity associated with facial emotion processing in adolescent depression.

Adolescence is a critical period of vulnerability to mental health issues, yet emotion processing in adolescent depression remains understudied. This task-based functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) study examines emotion processing in depressed adolescents and the effects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). fMRI data were collected during an emotional face processing task from 94 depressed adolescents and 34 healthy controls at baseline. As part of a feasibility study, a longitudinal sub-cohort of 14 depressed adolescents and 33 controls underwent follow-up scans after 24 weeks of

The influence of (social) anxiety and visual exploration on threat responding and generalization.

Fear generalization has been identified as an important mechanism that might contribute to the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders. It is, however, yet unclear to what degree attentional processes contribute to overgeneralization of fear in clinical samples. To address this issue, we utilized a set of facial photographs that was meticulously created such that pairs of faces could either be distinguished by looking into the eyes or the region around mouth and nose, respectively. These pairs were then employed as CS+ and CS- in a differential fear conditioning paradigm followed by a ge

Perceptual sensitivity to labeling stereotyped emotion expressions: Associations with age and subclinical psychopathology symptoms from childhood through early adulthood.

This study investigates (a) age-related differences in how the intensity of stereotyped facial expressions influence the emotion label children, adolescents, and adults assign to that face and (b) how this perceptual sensitivity relates to subclinical symptoms of psychopathology. In 2015-2016, 184 participants aged 4-25 years viewed posed stereotypes of angry, fearful, sad, and happy expressions morphed with neutral expressions at 10%-90% intensity. Thin plate regression smoothing splines were used to chart nonlinear associations between age and the perceptual threshold participants needed to

Sensitivity and response bias in non-clinical social anxiety to detect changes in facial expressions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has not established a consensus on the ability of higher socially anxious individuals to detect facial expressions. The purpose of this study was to examine this issue using Signal Detection Theory (SDT) as a framework. METHODS: Participants with higher levels of social anxiety (HSA) and lower levels of social anxiety (LSA) were instructed to complete a change-detection task. Prototypical (faces with congruent eyes and mouth, i.e., happy eyes and a smiling mouth) and blended (faces with incongruent eyes and mouth, i.e., neutral eyes and a happy mou

Prefrontal cortex activity triggered by affective faces exposure and its relationship with neuroticism.

The emotional processing of affective faces is an essential element of social relationships. Individual differences in personality traits such as neuroticism can influence how we manage these interactions. The objective of this study was to analyze changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity in response to visual exposure to affective faces, and to ascertain whether changes in PFC activity were related to scores in neuroticism, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and dependence facets. Fifty-two healthy undergraduate female students participated in the present study. Results showed

Combined Processing of Facial and Vocal Emotion in Remitted Patients With Bipolar I Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with impairments in facial emotion and emotional prosody perception during both mood episodes and periods of remission. To expand on previous research, the current study investigated cross-modal emotion perception, that is, matching of facial emotion and emotional prosody in remitted BD patients. METHODS: Fifty-nine outpatients with BD and 45 healthy volunteers were included into a cross-sectional study. Cross-modal emotion perception was investigated by using two subtests out of the Comprehensive Affective Testing System (CATS). RESULTS: Compa

Differential relations of suicidality in depression to brain activation during emotional and executive processing.

Suicidal behavior is highly prevalent in major depressive disorder (MDD), though not present in all patients. It is unclear whether the tendency for suicidal behavior is associated with a unique functional neuroanatomical signature identifiable through neuroimaging. In this study, we investigated brain activation in suicidal and non-suicidal patients with MDD during facial emotion processing and executive control. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from the NESDA-fMRI study (MDD patients N = 103, healthy controls N = 26, HC) were analyzed. Patients were divided in a group of sui

Testosterone abolishes implicit subordination in social anxiety.

Neuro-evolutionary theories describe social anxiety as habitual subordinate tendencies acquired through a recursive cycle of social defeat and submissive reactions. If so, the steroid hormone testosterone might be of therapeutic value, as testosterone is a main force behind implicit dominance drive in many species including humans. We combined these two theories to investigate whether the tendency to submit to the dominance of others is an implicit mechanism in social anxiety (Study-1), and whether this can be relieved through testosterone administration (Study-2). Using interactive eye-tracki

Left cheek bias for emotion perception, but not expression, is established in children aged 3-7 years.

As the left hemiface is controlled by the emotion-dominant right hemisphere, emotion is expressed asymmetrically. Portraits showing a model's left cheek consequently appear more emotive. Though the left cheek bias is well established in adults, it has not been investigated in children. To determine whether the left cheek biases for emotion perception and expression are present and/or develop between the ages of 3 and 7 years, 145 children (71 male, 74 female; M age = 65.49 months) completed two experimental tasks: one assessing biases in emotion perception, and the other assessing biases in em

Monitoring the emotional facial reactions of individuals with antisocial personality disorder during the retrieval of self-defining memories.

While a deficit in the recognition of facial expression has been demonstrated in persons with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), few studies have investigated how individuals with ASPD produce their own emotional facial expressions. This study examines the production of facial emotional expressions of male inpatients with ASPD in a forensic hospital compared with a control group as they retrieve autobiographical memories. This design constitutes a specific ecological experimental approach fostering the evocation of personal feelings. Two indicators characterizing the activation of facial

Effect of Bumetanide on Neural Correlates of Emotion Recognition in Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Event-related Potential Study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have impairments in emotion processing, including recognizing facial emotions. There is a significant need for medication to improve core symptoms of ASD. Bumetanide is one of the most recently used drugs in some studies of ASD to address this need. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of bumetanide on the brain response of youth with ASD while they were recognizing facial emotions using the event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Fifteen children with ASD aged between 7 to 16 years were evaluated using the childhood autism ra

Automated emotion recognition via video-based semantic embeddings.

INTRODUCTION: Automated emotion recognition systems often rely on acted datasets and categorical models that miss the nuance of spontaneous affect. METHODS: This work assembled a large corpus of authentic facial emotion expressions from naturalistic outpatient psychotherapy sessions, annotated with free-text descriptions by human labelers. These descriptions were embedded in a 768-dimensional semantic space using a fine-tuned German Sentence-BERT model. Transformer, BILSTM, and deep neural network architectures were trained to map facial landmark features to continuous emotion embeddings. RE

Two newly developed indices evaluating facial skin aging.

BACKGROUND: Skin assessment methodologies have focused mainly on intuitive aging characteristics, including facial wrinkles and pigmented spots, and usually adopt pattern recognition algorithms. Recently, distinct methods of interpreting skin aging, such as the detection of facial landmarks and age prediction using machine learning techniques, have been conducted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We defined two indices that represent the severity of facial aging. The first index was the ratio of the bizygomatic distance and bigonial distance. The second index was the ratio of the degrees of the near ma

An Atypical Presentation of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: Bilateral Facial Nerve Palsy With Preserved Reflexes.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) classically presents with ascending weakness and areflexia, but atypical variants can pose diagnostic challenges. Bilateral facial diplegia with paresthesia represents a rare localized variant, and the presence of preserved reflexes further deviates from typical presentations. This case highlights an unusual presentation of GBS characterized by bilateral facial nerve palsy with preserved deep tendon reflexes. We present here the case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with bilateral facial numbness and distal limb paresthesia one week after symptom onset and thr

Neuroanatomical Correlates of Recognizing Face Expressions in Mild Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

Early Alzheimer's disease can involve social disinvestment, possibly as a consequence of impairment of nonverbal communication skills. This … ected regions of interest. Unexpectedly, most of these correlations were negative: better emotional facial recognition was associated with lower brain volume. In particular, recognition of fear was negatively correlated with the volume of amygdala, disgust with pallidum, and happiness with fusiform gyrus.
