One of the most serious complications of chickenpox is varicella gangrenosa, a form of necrotizing fasciitis. A confounding factor is the frequency of more superficial skin infections during chickenpox, often caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Because the progression from cellulitis to fasciitis is so insidious, severe tissue necrosis often has occurred before the correct diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical examination. Even today, limb amputation is occasionally required for treatment of gangrenous varicella. In this report, we demonstrate that magnetic resonance imaging c

The authors report a case of beta-haemolytic streptococcal periorbital necrosing fasciitis in a two old girl. Extensive cutaneous necrosis of the four eyelids developed after the installation of a major septic syndrome. Excision of the necrotic tissues required removal of the palpebral part of the orbicularis muscle and opening of the orbital septum. A graft was performed on the 23rd day. Active palpebral occlusion was retained by means of the orbital portion of the orbicularis muscle. Two complementary grafts had to be performed to ensure satisfactory palpebral occlusion. The periorbital loca

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft-tissue infection, usually polymicrobial, that causes necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue while sparing skin and muscle. Although it more commonly involves the groin, abdomen, and extremities, it may also occur in the head and neck, usually secondary to dental infection. We report a case of cervical necrotizing fasciitis arising from a dental infection and review the cause, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this potentially lethal entity. Early detection and interventions is emphasized. Extensive surgical debridement remains the mainstay of trea

Skin or subcutaneous infection with aspergillus is uncommon. It has been described in disseminated aspergillosis, as localized infection in the immunocompromised host and as a complication of trauma and burns. Described in this paper is a diabetic patient who developed a fatal Aspergillus infection following debridement of a necrotizing fasciitis. "Fruiting bodies," rarely found in vivo, were seen on pathologic examination of subcutaneous tissue. Her course was similar to that of burn patients with invasive fungal disease, where mortality is high and radical debridement is the only chance for

Fulminant group A streptococcal infection with necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock-like syndrome is rare in Taiwan. We had diagnosed a case of necrotizing fasciitis with toxic shock-like syndrome in January, 1990. Tracing the patient's history, he was rather well in the past except that he scratched his skin occasionally. Erythromatous change with swelling and painful sensation of skin over medial aspect of left thigh was noted 4 days before admission. He called on local dermatologist and was treated with some topical medication. Unfortunately, the condition went downhill within 2 days with

A case report of a severe, rapidly aggressive necrotizing fasciitis of the facial tissues demonstrates the need to consider anatomic, systemic, and bacterial factors in evaluating this disease. Early diagnosis is critical for optimum management. Surgical debridement is the cornerstone of treatment and must be complemented with aggressive supportive therapy and antibiotics. In this instance of non-odontogenic beta-hemolytic necrotizing fasciitis of the face, aggressive care resulted in management of the disease process to a point where the patient's perioral wounds stabilized and were not of im

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but potentially lethal soft tissue infection. Reports of this entity in the obstetric patient exist. We present a case of necrotizing fasciitis arising de novo in the vulva. Early diagnosis and radical surgical debridement are the hallmarks of successful treatment.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rapidly spreading deep neck infection with a high mortality rate if left untreated. The occurrence of necrotizing infections in the head and neck region is uncommon; therefore, it is a rare cause of chest pain presenting to the emergency department. Here, we present an interesting case of fungal cervical skin abscess complicated by necrotizing fasciitis that progressed to involve the mediastinum, causing necrotizing mediastinitis with pneumomediastinum in an elderly female. The patient presented to the emergency department with chest pain, shortness of

Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica is a rare Gram-negative bacillus associated with fly larvae, myiasis, chronic wounds, and severe polymicrobial infection. We report a 71-year-old woman with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, severe peripheral vascular disease, and previous contralateral above-knee amputation who presented with septic shock secondary to an infected right hallux ulcer. Radiographs demonstrated soft-tissue gas extending into the distal calf. Emergency exploration revealed extensive necrosis and dishwater pus tracking proximally along the flexor hallucis longus tendon, consistent wi

BACKGROUND: The incidence of necrotizing soft tissue infections is increasing, and associated mortality remains high. It is important to make an early diagnosis, but diverse atypical presentations occur.
PATIENT: An older adult patient was admitted with sepsis syndrome without localizing clues. Necrotizing fasciitis of the right thigh and gluteus developed, and CT revealed an adjacent inflammatory cecum mass which was diagnosed during surgery as perforated adenocarcinoma.
CONCLUSION: A review of the literature revealed that this rare type of necrotizing soft tissue infection is characteristi

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive life-threatening infection involving necrosis of subcutaneous tissues and fascia. Though it mainly affects the extremities, perineum and abdominal wall, it rarely affects the breast.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 30-year-old woman on postpartum day seven presented with one-day history of fever with chills and rigors and painful, swollen and tender left breast. Although the initial diagnosis was mastitis, the disease progressively worsened with the breast developing ischaemic necrotic areas in the lower quadrants and nipple areolar re

We report an exceptional form of a synchronous multifocal necrotizing fasciitis (NF) affecting a 16-month-old girl. A high clinical suspicion of NF was confirmed by her laboratory risk indicators for necrotizing fasciitis score and magnetic resonance imaging. Blood cultures were positive for Streptococcus pyogenes . Successful outcomes were achieved through antibiotic treatment and an isolated surgical exploration using negative-pressure wound therapy.

Necrotizing fasciitis travels along the fascial plane and surrounding soft tissue, leading to ischemia and necrosis. Fournier's gangrene is a type of necrotizing fasciitis invading the deep and superficial planes of the perineal/genital region. It is rapidly progressive in nature and may have life-threatening consequences. Fournier's often exhibits a misleading clinical presentation and can be mistaken for other conditions, such as hematoma, phlebitis, cellulitis, or septic arthritis. Since the ramifications of delayed diagnosis can be clinically significant, recognition of potential mimics is

BACKGROUD: Pneumatosis in the cervical fascial space is a common imaging manifestation of cervical necrotizing fasciitis. At present, although there are some literature reports on pneumatosis in the cervical necrotizing fasciitis, there are few comparative reports.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the imaging findings of necrotizing fasciitis of the neck and other cervical space infections, and explore the relationship between pneumatosis in cervical fascial space and necrotizing fasciitis of the neck.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 56 cases of cervical fascia space infection in our de
