Cognitive reappraisal fails when attempting to reduce the appetitive value of food: an ERP study.

This event-related potential (ERP) study investigated neural correlates of cognitive reappraisal during the exposure to food cues. Thirty-three healthy, normal-weight women viewed images of high-caloric food and non-food items after an overnight fast. The participants were instructed to either passively look at the pictures, or to change (increase, decrease) the appetitive value of the food items. The P300 and the late positive potential (LPP) were higher across all conditions for food relative to non-food pictures. In the 'increase condition' the food images were rated as more appetizing and

Reference Gene-Assisted LAMP-LFD for Sensitive and Specific Detection of Soy DNA as a Marker for Allergen Presence in Complex Food Products.

Sensitive, selective screening for allergenic ingredients with internal control is crucial to identify food adulteration and remove allergens from the food chain. Here, loop-mediated isothermal amplification combined with a lateral flow device (LAMP-LFD) was developed for the fast and easy detection of soy DNA. The integrated quality controls included a regular control line to ensure proper implementation (extraction and amplification control) and a second LAMP-LFD assay for the cytochrome oxidase gene, which is a housekeeping gene in plants. The developed LAMP assay showed a limit of detectio

Bioinspired iron porphyrin covalent organic framework nanozyme with peroxidase-like activity for ratiometric colorimetric and portable swab-assisted detection of nitrite in food samples.

Nitrite (NO2-), a common food additive with excess risks, requires fast reliable detection for food safety. Herein, a biomimetic iron porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Fe-Por COF) was designed as a peroxidase-like nanozyme for colorimetric NO2- detection. It efficiently catalyzed H2O2-mediated TMB oxidation to blue oxidized TMB, which specifically reacted with NO2- under acidic conditions to form a yellow diazo compound-causing visible color change and ratiometric absorbance shift (652 nm to 450 nm). This method exhibited a wide linear of 0.5-250 μM with a low detection limit of 0.43

Effect of feeding on myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and the gastrointestinal tract in the opossum.

The effect of different foods on the myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal tract was evaluated in the opossum. Gallbladder pressure was also recorded. Feeding fat and mixed food resulted in the greatest incidence of spike activity in the duodenum and jejunum, followed by protein. The lowest incidence of slow waves with spikes in the duodenum and jejunum followed feeding of carbohydrates (P less than 0.01). Likewise, the lowest spike activity in the sphincter of Oddi was observed after carbohydrate feeding (P less than 0.05). There was no significant difference in t

Disruptive behavior: a dietary approach.

The effect of particular foods on levels of hyperactivity, uncontrolled laughter, and disruptive behaviors was studied in an 8-year-old autistic boy. The floor of the child's room was taped off into six equal-sized rectangles to measure general activity level. Frequency data were recorded on screaming, biting, scratching, and object throwing. A time-sample technique was used to record data on laughing. Data were gathered during four phases. During an initial 4-day period the child was fed a normal American diet. A 6-day fasting period followed, during which time only spring water was allowed.

Effects of hunger on mood and affect reactivity to monetary reward in women with obesity - A pilot study.

Worldwide, nearly 3 million people die every year because of being overweight or obese. Although obesity is a metabolic disease, behavioral aspects are important in its etiology. Hunger changes the rewarding potential of food in normal-weight controls. In obesity, impairments related to reward processing are present, but it is not clear whether these are due to mental disorders more common among this population. Therefore, in this pilot study, we aimed at investigating whether fasting influence mood reactivity to reward in people with obesity. Women with obesity (n = 11, all mentally healthy)

Impact of food intake, ultrasound transducer, breathing maneuvers and body position on acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastometry of the liver.

PURPOSE: Since acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastometry is an increasingly popular method for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis, we investigated factors possibly influencing hepatic elastometric measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30 healthy volunteers (17 females, 13 males) were recruited. The shear wave velocity of the right liver lobe was determined in a fasting upright and supine position and after different breathing maneuvers with the convex array (4C1) and in a supine position with the linear (9L4) ultrasound transducer. In 18 volunteers, subsequent measureme

Influence of food and fluid ingestion on aspirin bioavailability.

The influence of test meals and accompanying fluid volume on aspirin bioavailability from commercial tablets was determined following single oral doses to healthy male volunteers. Plasma aspirin and salicylate levels were determined simultaneously using a GLC end-point. Area analysis indicated that approximately 5--8% of absorbed drug entered the systemic circulation as unchanged aspirin in nonfasted subjects compared to 16--18% in fasted individuals. Food tended to reduce the appearance rate of aspirin into the circulation, resulting in lower and somewhat more sustained levels than with fasti

Dietary acid load is positively associated with insulin resistance: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are among the biggest causes of death and health expenses worldwide. A higher dietary acid load (DAL) is associated with chronic low-grade metabolic acidosis, and may increase the risk of insulin resistance (IR), DM, hypertension, and CVD mortality. However, the association between DAL and IR still lacks population-based studies to confirm laboratory findings. METHODS: This is a population-based observational study including a sample of 545 individuals aged 25-64 years from Florianópolis (Southern Brazil) who participa

Case Report: Sustained weight loss and glycemic control from repeated long-term fasting in type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common metabolic disorder typically managed with medication; however, fasting has recently attracted attention for its potential benefits in glycemic control, weight management, and even potential remission. This case report examines the effects of repeated long-term fasting on weight reduction, glycemic control, and medication requirements in a 57-year-old man with T2DM. The patient, who had a history of inadequate glycemic control despite conventional treatment, opted for repeated long-term fasting under medical supervision. He completed several fasts ran

Is fasting beneficial for hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel diseases?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are usually hospitalized because of aggravated gastrointestinal symptoms. Many clinicians empirically advise these patients to fast once they are admitted. However, there has been no evidence that maintaining a complete bowel rest improves the disease course. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of fasting on disease course in admitted patients with IBD or intestinal Behçet's disease. METHODS: A total of 222 patients with IBD or intestinal Behçet's disease, who were admitted for disease-related symptoms, were retrospect

Expression and localization of tight, adherens, and gap junction proteins in the chicken ovary during pause in laying induced by fasting.

Intercellular junctions are critical to normal functioning and remodeling of various tissues in the reproductive system; however, their importance in the avian ovary is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to examine the expression and localization of essential tight (claudin 1, occludin, zonula occludens 1 [ZO1 gene]), adherens (E-cadherin [CDH1], β-catenin [CTNNB1]), and gap (connexin 43 [GJA1]) junction proteins in the hen ovarian follicles during a pause in laying induced by fasting. 32-week-old Hy-Line Brown hens were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (fed ad lib

Long-term increase in Mediterranean diet adherence combined with decrease in ultra-processed food consumption is associated with reduction in depressive symptoms: Results from the Moli-sani study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with a reduced risk of depressive symptoms, while high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been linked to poorer mental health. However, the long-term combined effects of changes in MD adherence and UPF consumption on depressive symptoms remain poorly investigated. The aim of the study was to examine how joint trajectories of MD adherence and UPF consumption over the long term relates to changes in depressive symptoms. METHODS: We longitudinally analysed data from 1417 adults (54% women, mean age 54 yr) in the Moli-sani S

Time restricted feeding alters the behavioural and physiological outcomes to repeated mild traumatic brain injury in male and female rats.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) research has had limited success translating treatments from preclinical models to clinical application for concussion. One major factor that has been overlooked is the near 24-hour availability of food, both for experimental nocturnal rodents and patients suffering from mTBI. Here, we characterised the impact of food restriction limited to either the inactive (day) or the active phase (night), on repetitive mTBI (RmTBI) - induced outcomes in male and female rats. We found that active phase fed rats consumed more food, had increased body weight, and reduced b
