This paper investigates how the learning environments and family dynamics differ if households have a child with a disability or a parent with a disability. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, results indicate that children with disabilities experience similar learning environments as other children, but have somewhat weaker relationships with their parents. In two-parent families, maternal disability lowers parents' school involvement and is associated with a less enriching home environment. Paternal disability reduces maternal monitoring and positive family activi

BACKGROUND: A better understanding is needed of the contextual factors that influence HIV risk behaviors among female adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. The objectives of this study were to assess the influence of family structure on lifetime sexual partners and on the number of sexual partners in the last year among female adolescents in rural Rakai, Uganda. In addition, the study assessed whether the influence of family structure on these outcomes differed by the school attendance status of the adolescents.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 2337 unmarried adolescent girls, aged 15-19, enroll

Ohtahara syndrome is a devastating early infantile epileptic encephalopathy caused by mutations in different genes. We describe a patient with Ohtahara syndrome who presented on the first day of life with refractory tonic seizures and a suppression-burst pattern on EEG. The patient developed severe microcephaly, and never achieved any developmental milestones. He died at the age of 5 years. A de novo missense mutation (c. 4007C>A, p.S1336Y) in SCN2A was found. Interestingly, the father has another son with Ohtahara syndrome from a different mother. The half brother carries the same SCN2A mutat

OBJECTIVE: Family characteristics (relationship quality, parental behaviors, and attitudes relating to alcohol use) are known to influence alcohol use in the mid-teen years, and there is evidence that family characteristics have different influences on mid-teen girls versus boys. This study examined child gender differences in the association of family relationship quality, parental disapproval of children's alcohol use, and parental alcohol use with early adolescent alcohol use.
METHOD: Grade 6 and 8 students (modal age 11 and 13, respectively; N = 6,837; 52.6% female) were recruited from 23

The issue of the father-child relationship has been greatly ignored in the domestic violence research literature. This study investigated whether intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by biological fathers resulted in higher levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms and behavior problems than violence perpetrated by nonbiological fathers and whether children who witnessed violence perpetrated by multiple father figures had increased levels of posttraumatic stress disorder and behavioral symptoms. Eighty mothers who experienced domestic incidents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL…

The purpose of this paper is to present research on the effects of postpartum depression (PPD) on mothers, fathers, and children that point to a re-conceptualization of PPD as a mental health condition that affects the whole family. As such, the objectives of this paper are to discuss: (1) the incidence and effects of PPD on mothers and fathers; (2) common predictors of PPD in mothers and fathers, and (3) the effects of PPD on parenting and parent-child relationships, and (4) the effects of PPD on children's health, and their cognitive and social-emotional development. Finally, the implication

The interrelationships between experience of parental verbal aggression and physical violence during childhood and the development of low self-esteem during adulthood were explored separately for the father-daughter and mother-daughter relationships. Data were collected from 472 women between the ages of 18 and 45 during in-depth interviews drawn from five sources: outpatient alcoholism treatment, DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) education programs, shelter for battered women, outpatient mental health treatment, and randomly from the community. Control variables included respondents' alcohol pr

Maternal cannabis use in pregnancy is reported to be associated with perinatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Such associations, however, may be biased by residual confounding by socioeconomic position (SEP). To assess confounding, we use paternal cannabis use in pregnancy as a negative control exposure. We use data from 15,013 mother-father-child trios from the ALSPAC birth cohort, with participants initially recruited between 1990 and 1992. Exposures were maternal and paternal cannabis use during pregnancy. Neonatal anthropometry, perinatal, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental o

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the leading infectious cause of hearing loss and neurodevelopmental impairment in children, yet the psychosocial impact has only recently begun to be explored. The objectives of this study were to describe the experiences of children and families affected by cCMV, and examine the use of clinical psychology as a model of care.
METHODS: Thirty-four families were recruited from a specialist cCMV clinic and invited to access developmental assessment and individual formulation-based clinical psychology intervention, including facilitated parent peer

BACKGROUND: Fanconi's syndrome (FS) is characterized by type-2 renal tubular acidosis, short stature, and renal rickets, along with glycosuria, aminoaciduria, hypophosphaturia, and urinary bicarbonate wasting. The genetic form of FS has been linked to HNF4A variants. Although additional clinical features such as hearing impairment have recently been associated with HNF4A-linked FS, its ocular manifestation has not been described.

AIM: The actions and behaviors of parents have been identified as key factors that influence a child's participation in physical activity. However, there is limited knowledge of how parents can be supported to embody facilitative roles. This study aimed to explore how an ecological intervention encourages parents of children with disabilities to develop as facilitators, to enable ongoing physical activity participation in a child's local environment.
METHODS: A qualitative design using grounded theory was employed. Forty four parents (26 mothers, 18 fathers) of 31 children with a range of dis
