Previous Usutu Virus Exposure Partially Protects Magpies (Pica pica) against West Nile Virus Disease But Does Not Prevent Horizontal Transmission.

The mosquito-borne flaviviruses USUV and WNV are known to co-circulate in large parts of Europe. Both are a public health concern, and USUV … s. After challenge with a neurovirulent WNV strain, neither viremia, viral titer of WNV in vascular feathers, nor neutralizing antibody titers of previously USUV-exposed magpies differed significantly with respect to magpies that had not previously been exposed to USUV. However, 75% (6/8) of the USUV-exposed birds survived, while only 22.2% (2/9) of those …

Ventral dermatitis in rowi (Apteryx rowi) due to cutaneous larval migrans.

The rowi is a critically endangered species of kiwi. Young birds on a crèche island showed loss of feathers from the ventral abdomen and a scurfy dermatitis of the abdominal skin and vent margin. Histology of skin biopsies identified cutaneous larval migrans, which was shown by molecular sequencing to be possibly from a species of Trichostrongylus as a cause of ventral dermatitis and occasional ulcerative vent dermatitis. The predisposing factors that led to this disease are suspected to be the novel exposure of the rowi to parasites from seabirds or marine mammals due to the island crèche and…

Japanese quail acute exposure to methamidophos: experimental design, lethal, sub-lethal effects and cholinesterase biochemical and histochemical expression.

We exposed the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) to the organophosphate methamidophos using acute oral test. Mortality and sub-lethal effects were recorded in accordance to internationally accepted protocols. In addition cholinesterases were biochemically estimated in tissues of the quail: brain, liver and plasma. Furthermore, brain, liver and duodenum cryostat sections were processed for cholinesterase histochemistry using various substrates and inhibitors. Mortalities occurred mainly in the first 1-2h following application. Sub-lethal effects, such as ataxia, ruffled feathers, trem…

Histologic, neurologic, and immunologic effects of methylmercury in captive great egrets.

Captive great egret (Ardea albus) nestlings were maintained as controls or were dosed with methylmercury chloride at low (0.5), and high doses (5 mg/kg, wet weight) in fish. Low dosed birds were given methylmercury at concentrations comparable to current exposure of wild birds in the Everglades (Florida, USA). When compared with controls, low dosed birds had lower packed cell volumes, dingy feathers, increased lymphocytic cuffing in a skin test, increased bone marrow cellularity, decreased bursal wall thickness, decreased thymic lobule size, fewer lymphoid aggregates in lung, increased perivas…

Uric Acid Ingluviolith in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

This clinical report describes an adult, female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) diagnosed with an ingluviolith. The patient presented for intermittent regurgitation, and a palpable foreign body was present in the crop. Radiographs showed a radiopaque foreign body, and computed tomography showed an approximately 16 × 12 mm (length 3 width) structure in the crop with a soft tissue and focally mineralized center and a 2-3 mm-thick mineral-attenuating shell. An ingluviotomy was performed. The stone was first analyzed using polarized optical crystallography, a method that cannot analyze uric a

Retrobulbar Adenocarcinoma with Subconjunctival Extension in a Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

A free ranging, fledged common buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found with severe feather damage and left periorbital swelling. Clinical examination revealed a 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm left medial subconjunctival mass. The abnormal tissue extended over most of the left cornea, severely impairing the bird's vision in that eye. Additionally, the left globe was displaced in a temporal direction. Computed tomography revealed the origin of the mass to be retrobulbar tissue. An ultrasound examination of the mass found cystic areas, and a sanguineous fluid was aspirated. Cytological examination of the aspirated f

[Infectious keratitis in contact lens wearers].

Infectious keratitis in contact lens wearers Infectious keratitis is a sight-threatening complication in contact lens wearers. The infection is most frequently caused by bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). However, fungi or Acanthamoeba are found in increasing frequency. Three cases illustrate a characteristic course: patient A (11-year-old male) was treated for three weeks before the characteristic aspect of Acanthamoeba keratitis was recognized and confirmed. Patient B (45-year-old female) developed a severe corneal ulcer within 4 days; microbiological diagnostics confirmed Pseudomonas aerugi

Does Altered Uric Acid Metabolism Contribute to Diabetic Kidney Disease Pathophysiology?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Multiple experimental and clinical studies have identified pathways by which uric acid may facilitate the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people with diabetes. However, it remains uncertain if the association of uric acid with CKD represents a pathogenic effect or merely reflects renal impairment. RECENT FINDINGS: In contrast to many published reports, a recent Mendelian randomization study did not identify a causal link between uric acid and CKD in people with type 1 diabetes. Two recent multicenter randomized control trials, Preventing Early

Simultaneous production of detergent stable keratinolytic protease, amylase and biosurfactant by Bacillus subtilis PF1 using agro industrial waste.

The present study is an attempt to optimize simultaneous production of keratinolytic protease, amylase and biosurfactant from feather meal, potato peel and rape seed cake in a single media by response surface methodology to evaluate their biochemical properties for detergent additive. The optimization was carried out using 20 run, 3 factor and 5-level of central composite design on design expert software which resulted in a 1.2, 0.84 and 2.28 fold increase in protease, amylase and biosurfactant production. The proteolytic activity was found to be optimum at pH 9.0 and 60 °C while optimum amylo

Differential diagnostic features of small cell carcinoma in the uterine cervix.

Small cell carcinoma (SMCC) of the uterine cervix is rare and known to be an aggressive tumor, but there are only few reports on the cytologic features of cervical SMCC. This rare small cell lesion should be distinguished from malignant lymphoma (ML), squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCIS), and chronic lymphocytic cervicitis (CLC). By clarifying cytologic features and reevaluating the significance of cervical cytologic smears to reveal these cervical lesions, we can improve the diagnostic specificity and patient's outcome. The clinical record and available cervical smears from 13 cases of SMCC

Tickle.

Tickle is a familiar sensation that may have two components: a light or feather-type noxious sensation termed by Hall and Allin as knismesis, and a heavy or laughter-associated sensation termed gargalesis. Studies on the sensation of tickle have generally been on one sensation or the other, but not on both. In pleasurable, laughter-associated tickle there are elements of touch and pleasure, but the sensation may be a synthesis of touch and itch, with receptors, neural pathways or central receptors different from knismesis. It is unclear why some skin sites are more ticklish than other sites. L

Effects of methyl mercury exposure on the growth of juvenile common loons.

We conducted a dose-response laboratory study to quantify the level of mercury exposure associated with negative effects on the development of common loon chicks reared in captivity from hatch to 105 days. A dose regimen was implemented that provided exposure levels that bracketed relevant exposure levels of methyl mercury found in loon chicks across North America. We observed no overt signs of mercury toxicosis and detected no significant effect of dietary mercury exposure on growth or food consumption. However, asymptotic mass was lower in chicks that hatched from eggs collected from nests o

Evaluation of two direct immunoassays for rapid detection of petroleum products on marine birds.

To reduce rehabilitation time and improve survival, a practical, objective test is needed to determine if marine birds are contaminated with oil before they enter captivity. The RaPID Assays and EnviroGard immunoassays for detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil were evaluated for their ability to detect petroleum on feather samples from 30 intermediate fuel oil contaminated and 30 uncontaminated common murres (Uria aalge). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, precision, and time required to run each assay were determined. The RaPID Assays was

Novel tissue culture method: skeletal muscle implantation under gizzard serous membrane of a chick.

A novel method for a long-term culture of skeletal muscle is described. Skeletal muscle pieces from young chicks were implanted under the gizzard serous membrane of the same chicks. Following muscle degeneration, new well-grouped muscle fibers were formed by the fusion of myocytes that differentiated from surviving satellite cells, and the regenerated muscle tissues were maintained in position for longer than 60 days. The implants were in the vital circulatory system, receiving trophic and oxygen supplies, and are completely free from motor nerve innervation and cell contamination with exogeno

Animal models with potential applications for screening compounds for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The availability of an animal model for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is necessary for the development of novel pharmacological treatments. To be useful, the model must be predictive of clinical performance, possess characteristic criteria and distinguish anti-OCD from antidepressant compounds. Due to the lack of OCD models useful for drug discovery, all compounds currently used for OCD were developed first as antidepressants. In this article, we discuss the relative merits of: stereotypic behaviours (canine acral lick, feather picking, amphetamine- and 5-HT-induced stereotypy); adjuncti
