Adiponectin may affect bone through interactions with two known receptors, adiponectin receptors (ADIPOR) 1 and 2. We examined the association between polymorphisms of ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2 and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal Korean women. Six polymorphisms in ADIPOR1 and four polymorphisms in ADIPOR2 were selected and genotyped in all study participants (n = 1,329). BMD at the lumbar spine and femur neck were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Lateral thoracolumbar (T4-L4) radiographs were obtained for vertebral fracture assessment and the occurrence of non-vertebral …

Paediatric femoral neck fractures are uncommon injuries and are usually caused by high-energy trauma. Low-energy trauma can result in pathologic neck fractures and stress fractures of the neck, due to repetitive activity. Surgical options can vary based on age, Delbet classification and displacement of the fracture. Treatment for displaced fractures is by closed or open reduction and smooth/cancellous screw fixation. Compression screw and side plate fixation is indicated for basal fractures. Fixation should be supplemented by spica cast immobilization in younger children. The high rate of comp

We report a case of a healthy, young, female soccer player who developed progressive pain in her right hip. A bone cystic lesion was found in the right femoral neck and proximal femur. The lesion was considered a benign bone cyst and the patient was treated with injections of autologous bone marrow and grafting into the femoral neck. However, the cystic lesion did not heal. Subsequently, the patient fell and developed a fracture of the femoral neck that required internal fixation. The bone biopsy showed characteristic histologic features of fibrous dysplasia. A bone scan showed other areas of

Elastic stabile intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is a well-established method to stabilize diaphyseal fracture of the femur (DFF) in children. We aimed to evaluate the minimal medullary canal diameter (MMCD) of the fractured femur relative to the diameter of the nails. We also analyzed the real anteversion angle (AVA) of the affected femur in comparison to the healthy femur. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and plain X-ray images of children aged 2-15 years treated with ESIN for unstable femoral shaft fractures between 2004 and 2012. We measured MMCD on preoperative plain X-ray imag

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates have been shown to be effective agents in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Because corticosteroid associated osteoporosis is often associated with increased bone turnover, the effect of intermittent intravenous infusions of pamidronate on this condition has been investigated.
METHODS: Seventeen patients (five male) with chronic corticosteroid dependent lung disease (15 asthma, two sarcoidosis) were treated with infusions of 30 mg pamidronate once every three months for one year. These patients had been taking an average of 14 (range 7.5-40) mg predniso

BACKGROUND: Patients with kidney failure have elevated fracture risk that remains high following kidney transplantation. This study aimed to assess whether dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry-derived advanced hip analysis (AHA) and the trabecular bone score (TBS) improve bone mineral density (BMD)-based post-transplant fracture prediction.
METHODS: Patients receiving kidney-only or simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplants underwent immediate post-transplant dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to provide BMD, the TBS, and AHA parameters; femoral neck, calcar, and shaft cortical thickness (CTh)

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fracture despite relatively preserved bone mineral density (BMD). Although this paradox might be attributed to the influence of insulin resistance (IR) on bone structure and material properties, the association of IR with femur bone geometry and strength indices remains unclear.
METHODS: Using data from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Etiology Research Center cohort study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis among nondiabetic postmenopausal women. IR was estimated using the homeostasis model

BACKGROUND: Quantifying bone mineral density (BMD) on CT using commercial software demonstrates good-to-excellent correlations with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) results. However, previous techniques to measure Hounsfield units (HUs) within the proximal femur demonstrate less successful correlation with DEXA results. An effective method of measuring HUs of the proximal femur from CT colonoscopy might allow for opportunistic osteoporosis screening.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do proximal femur HU measurements from CT colonoscopy correlate with proximal femur DEXA results? (2) How effecti

A number of reports regarding atypical fractures of the femur have raised questions concerning the possible correlation between long-term bisphosphonate treatment and the occurrence of insufficiency fractures in the proximal femur. However, clinically, it is often confused whether is it a fatigue fracture because of implant induced stress concentration or a bisphosphonate-related atypical fracture, especially in a patient with a subtrochanteric fracture who receive bisphosphonate therapy after open reduction and internal fixation, such as dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation for previous ipsilater

A simple hip dislocation is one without fracture of the proximal femur or acetabulum. Complex fracture-dislocations involve the acetabulum, femoral head, or femoral neck. The incidence of posttraumatic arthritis is much lower in simple dislocations than in fracture-dislocations. The most common mechanism of injury is a high-energy motor vehicle accident, which is usually associated with other systemic and musculoskeletal injuries. The hip should be reduced emergently in an atraumatic fashion. For acetabular fracture, intraoperative stress views may be necessary to evaluate for instability and

Hip arthroscopy is an increasingly common procedure, particularly for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement. Various complications have been previously reported, and the authors sought to further evaluate the safety of this procedure. This study was conducted to identify the incidence of femoral neck fracture as well as treatment and outcomes after arthroscopic femoroplasty. In April 2013, a survey was administered to 28 established hip arthroscopists regarding the breadth of their experience, including the total number of hip arthroscopies and proximal femoroplasties performed and the

UNLABELLED: Mineral density and bone geometry are the two main biomechanical factors related to bone resistance to stress.
OBJECTIVE: In this study we assess whether differences in the proximal femur geometry (PFG) characterize different types of osteoporotic fractures.
METHODS: We studied 533 postmenopausal women aged 50 - 85. They were divided into four groups matched for bone mineral density at the femoral neck; without fractures (165), vertebral fractures (139), trochanteric fractures (102), and hip fractures (127). Dual X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans at the spine and at the hip were c

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral fractures of the proximal femur and femoral shaft are extremely uncommon injuries which occur in young adults who sustain a high energy trauma. A variety of management modalities have been tried to treat this complex fracture pattern ranging from conservative approach to recently introduced reconstruction nails. All these approaches have their own difficulties. We studied the outcome of long proximal femoral nail (LPFN) in the management of concomitant ipsilateral fracture of the proximal femur and femoral shaft.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed the prospective data
