Effects of badminton insole design on stress distribution, displacement and bone rotation of ankle joint during single-leg landing: a finite element analysis.

Previous research has reported that up to 92% of injuries amongst badminton players consist of lower limb, whereby 35% of foot fractures occurred at the metatarsal bone. In sports, insoles are widely used to increase athletes' performance and prevent many injuries. However, there is still a lack of badminton insole analysis and improvements. Therefore, this study aimed to biomechanically analyse three different insole designs. A validated and converged three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of ankle-foot complex was developed, which consisted of the skin, talus, calcaneus, navicular, thre

A modified walk-in clinic for shoe insoles: Follow-up of non-attendants.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study (n = 1286), we found that a modified walk-in system reduced waiting times for prescription of shoe insoles by 40 days compared to scheduled appointments but resulted in a non-attendance rate of 17% compared to 6% for scheduled appointments. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the reasons for non-attendance at the modified walk-in clinic. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Unlike traditional walk-in clinics, a limited number of patients were invited each week from the waiting list to attend the modified walk-in clinic on pre-specified days during

The effect of Knee-Ankle-Foot orthosis stiffness on the parameters of walking.

The purpose of this simulation study was to analyze the effect of variation in Knee-Ankle-Foot-Orthosis stiffness on the joint power and the energy cost of walking. The effect of contractile tissue was simulated using linear elastic spring and viscous dampers in knee and ankle joints. Then, joint angles, ground reaction force, were collected from Twenty chronic hemiparesis subjects (15 males and 5 females) and twenty control subjects (14 males and 6 females), and spring stiffness were considered as the inputs. In this new study, the generated muscle torques were optimized by changing the stiff

Which treatment is most effective for patients with patellofemoral pain? A protocol for a living systematic review including network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) affects 1 in every 14 adults. Many treatments for PFP have been evaluated, but the comparative effectiveness of all available treatments has never been examined. Network meta-analysis is the only design to study the comparative effectiveness of all available treatments in one synthesis. This protocol describes the methods for a systematic review including network meta-analysis to assess which treatment is most likely to be effective for patients with PFP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The primary outcome measures of this network meta-analysis are the global rat

Efficacy of TOPAZ coblation-assisted percutaneous fasciotomy in chronic plantar fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of chronic heel pain, accounting for up to 10 % of running-related injuries and significantly impacting the quality of life in both active and sedentary populations. While the majority of patients respond to conservative measures such as stretching, physiotherapy, orthoses, steroid injections, and extracorporeal shockwave therapy, approximately 5-10 % remain symptomatic despite prolonged non-operative treatment. Surgical intervention is considered in these refractory cases, with both open and endoscopic plantar fasciotomy tradition

Generalized joint laxity associated with increased medial foot loading in female athletes.

CONTEXT: The relationship between generalized joint laxity and plantar pressure distribution of the foot and the potential implications for lower extremity injury have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between generalized joint laxity and dynamic plantar pressure distribution. We hypothesized that individuals with greater generalized joint laxity, or hypermobility, would have greater dynamic medial midfoot pressure and loading during walking than nonhypermobile individuals. DESIGN: Case control. SETTING: Institutional biomechanics laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PART

Contribution of ankle-foot orthosis moment in regulating ankle and knee motions during gait in individuals post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: Ankle-foot orthosis moment resisting plantarflexion has systematic effects on ankle and knee joint motion in individuals post-stroke. However, it is not known how much ankle-foot orthosis moment is generated to regulate their motion. The aim of this study was to quantify the contribution of an articulated ankle-foot orthosis moment to regulate ankle and knee joint motion during gait in individuals post-stroke. METHODS: Gait data were collected from 10 individuals post-stroke using a Bertec split-belt instrumented treadmill and a Vicon 3-dimensional motion analysis system. Each par

Effective and clinically relevant optimisation of cushioning stiffness to maximise the offloading capacity of diabetic footwear.

INTRODUCTION: Optimising the cushioning stiffness of diabetic footwear/orthoses can significantly enhance their offloading capacity. This study explores whether optimum cushioning stiffness can be predicted using simple demographic and anthropometric parameters. METHODS: Sixty-nine adults with diabetes and loss of protective sensation in their feet were recruited for this cross-sectional observational study. In-shoe plantar pressure was measured using Pedar® for a neutral diabetic shoe (baseline) and after adding cushioning footbeds of varying stiffness. The cushioning stiffness that achieved

Does the long-term use of medial arch support insole induce the radiographic structural changes for pediatric flexible flat foot? - A prospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Several conservative treatment methods, from intrinsic muscle exercises to orthoses, including insoles or specially designed shoes, have been introduced for pediatric flexible flat foot (PFFF). However, the structural effects of a long-term use of medial arch support insole remain unclear because the normal physiological maturation of the medial longitudinal arch cannot be ruled out. METHODS: From January 2005 to June 2015, 18 patients (34 feet) in group 1 (continuously insole applied group) and 13 patients (26 feet) in group 2 (untreated group) were enrolled. Medial arch support

Pilot studies suggesting new applications of NiTi in dynamic orthoses for the ankle joint.

NiTi is a metal alloy with unconventional functional characteristics: Shape memory and pseudoelasticity. Its use in the field of rehabilitation is very innovative. This work presents applications in lower limb orthotics. Three different devices were assembled and tested: An equinus gait dynamic splint, a compliant ankle positioning brace, and a dual-mode haptic/active exerciser for the dorsiflexors. Results are derived from technical and preclinical trials. The gait splint improves several walking parameters even better than a traditional flexible ankle-foot orthoses (AFO). In particular, it s…

Studying the effect of kinematical pattern on the mechanical performance of paraplegic gait with reciprocating orthosis.

Paraplegic users of mechanical walking orthoses, e.g. advanced reciprocating gait orthosis (ARGO), often face high energy expenditure and extreme upper body loading during locomotion. We studied the effect of kinematical pattern on the mechanical performance of paraplegic locomotion, in search for an improved gait pattern that leads to lower muscular efforts. A three-dimensional, four segment, six-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model of the advanced reciprocating gait orthosis-assisted paraplegic locomotion was developed based on the data acquired from an experimental study on a single subject.
