Inflammatory Reactions to Red Tattoo Inks: Three cases highlighting an emerging problem.

In recent years, tattoos have become more commonplace. However, this can result in various inflammatory processes, the management of which can be challenging in daily clinical practice. Tattoo-related inflammatory reactions can comprise different patterns, including acute and immediate reactions, foreign body granulomas, sarcoid granulomas, isomorphic lesions, allergic contact dermatitis and photosensitivity. We report three cases who were referred to the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic of the Hospital Universitario San Cecilio, Granada, Spain, in 2017 with various skin reactions in the red-ink

A case series and a review of the literature on foreign modelling agent reaction: an emerging problem.

Foreign modelling agent reactions (FMAR) are the result of the injection of unapproved high-viscosity fluids with the purpose of cosmetic body modelling. Its consequences lead to ulceration, disfigurement and even death, and it has reached epidemic proportions in several regions of the world. We describe a series of patients treated for FMARs in a specialised wound care centre and a thorough review of the literature. A retrospective chart review was performed from January 1999 to September 2015 of patients who had been injected with non-medical foreign agents and who developed cutaneous ulcera

Failed meniscus repair.

This report describes problems arising after an arthroscopic meniscal refixation using the biodegradable Clearfix screw system (Innovasive Devices, Marlborough, MA). A serious problem arose in the form of migration of a meniscal screw that had been inserted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Dislocation of the screw led to pain on the medial aspect of the knee joint and irritation of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve. The case reported here is a first analysis of the potential complications associated with the use of this meniscal refixation system.

Amalgam tattoos: light and electron microscopy and electron-probe micro-analysis.

A common tattoo occurring in the mouth is caused by the insertion of amalgam filling material into the soft tissues. Fifteen amalgam tattoos were examined. Amalgam or its derivatives were found within macrophages, fibroblasts and multinuclear giant cells. Fine particles were found associated with: the basement-membranes of mucosal epithelium, of striped muscle fibres, and of muscle cells of blood vessels; collagen; elastic tissue; and the connective tissue of nerves. Amalgam consists mainly of mercury, silver and tin. The analytical results suggest that corrosion occurs and that mercury and so

Congenital cheek teratoma with temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis managed with ultra-thin silicone sheet interpositional arthroplasty.

Primary cheek teratomas are rare with < 5 reported cases. None had associated temporo mandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA). The fundamental aim in the treatment of TMJA is the successful surgical resection of ankylotic bone, prevention of recurrence, and aesthetic improvement by ensuring functional occlusion. Early treatment is necessary to promote proper growth and function of mandible and to facilitate the positive psychological development of child. Inter-positional arthroplasty with ultra-thin silicone sheet was performed. Advantages include short operative time, less foreign material in the

Perils of Permanent Fillers: A Case Report of Necrosis of the Upper and Lower Lip.

This article discusses a case of total upper and lower lip necrosis caused by a foreign-body reaction to permanent filler injections, highlighting the risks associated with cosmetic procedures. Permanent fillers can lead to significant tissue damage, necessitating aggressive surgical treatment for their removal and reconstruction. The use of free tissue transfer, specifically the radial forearm free flap, is highlighted as an effective method for restoring lip function and aesthetics. Overall, this report underscores the importance of careful consideration and awareness of potential adverse ou…

Tympano-Mastoid Cholesterol Granuloma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a rare condition histological consisting of a foreign body, giant cell reaction to cholesterol crystals and haemosiderin derived from the ruptured of the erythrocytes. A 25-year-old man came to our Department presenting signs and symptoms of tympano-mastoid cholesterol granuloma. He showed all the specific sign and symptoms of the disease. However, considering the lack of literature regarding TMCG, this study was performed with the aim of presenting the main characteristics of tympano-mastoid CG, describing the case report and reviewing the literature.

[Mesenteric panniculitis associated with acute pancreatitis: about a case].

Mesenteric panniculitis is a nonspecific inflammation involving the mesentery. Its clinical presentation is variable depending on the stage of the disease. Clinical signs are usually pain but half of the patients remain asymptomatic. Palpable abdominal mass, weight loss, nausea and vomiting. There may be an inflammatory syndrome of variable intensity. Panniculitis is suspected based on scan showing hyperdense mesentery with adhesions to adjacent organs. Histologically there is adipocyte degeneration causing foreign body reaction and appear lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory lesions. We report a ne

Pigmented epidermal cyst with dense collection of melanin: A rare entity - Report of a case with review of the literature.

Epidermal cyst is a very common benign cystic lesion of the skin. It is usual to find ulceration of the lining epithelium, rupture of the cyst wall with chronic inflammation and foreign body giant cell reaction. But, it is very rare to see an epidermal cyst with marked accumulation of melanin pigment. Only a few cases of pigmented epidermal cyst with dense collection of melanin pigment have been published in the literature. Here, we are reporting a case of ruptured epidermal cyst with keratin granuloma formation and showing dense collection of melanin pigment.

Inferior alveolar nerve damage caused by bone wax in third molar surgery.

The authors present a case of inferior alveolar nerve morbidity attributable to use of bone wax to control haemorrhage during third molar surgery. The patient presented after 11 symptom-free years with parasthesia and, eventually pain in the cutaneous distribution of the right inferior alveolar nerve. Radiographs revealed a 1cm radiolucency consistent with a neuroma. Pathological examination of the surgically resected lesion revealed a foreign body reaction to bone wax. The case illustrates the poor resorption qualities of bone wax and the need for other haemostatic agents to achieve haemostas

Focal cholesterol granuloma in the anterior mediastinum: [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose-positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Cholesterol granuloma is a foreign-body type granuloma that forms in reaction to cholesterol crystals. We report a rare case of focal cholesterol granuloma in the anterior mediastinum of a 62-year-old asymptomatic man that presented as an indeterminate anterior mediastinal nodule on [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography scans. T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance images revealed markedly hypo-intense signals reflecting pathologic hyalinized collagen fibers. Magnetic resonance signal characteristics might be helpful for distinguishing benign chole

Hydatid disease at the proximal end of the clavicle.

We report a case of hydatid disease at the proximal end of the clavicle of a 47-year-old woman. In an open biopsy, laminated layers, characteristic of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae, were revealed by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. A marked foreign-body reaction was observed in the pathological findings. The patient was definitely diagnosed as having osseous hydatid disease. We performed resection of the infected part of the clavicle, and after the operation, she has been cured under medication with albendazole for 9 years, with no finding of recurrence in the clavicle.

Sprouting epidermoid cysts.

Five unusually shaped (i.e. 'sprouting') epidermoid cysts in the upper lip, elbow and foot are reported. The tumours seldom produced symptoms. The maximum diameter was 25-48 mm. The complete removal including a sprouting bud is necessary. Histologically, partial to complete cyst wall rupture was recognised. A pulsion diverticulum due to variations in the thickness and strength of the cyst wall, a foreign body reaction against inner keratinous mass without obvious bacterial infection, and/or outer fibrous band(s) acting as constriction band(s), are proposed as possible causes of the 'sprouting'

Granulomatous reaction to silicone in axillary lymph nodes. A case report with cytologic findings.

BACKGROUND: Silicone lymphadenopathy is a rare complication in patients with breast implants and is often confused with metastases from breast carcinoma. CASE: A 36-year-old female who had undergone bilateral breast augmentation six years earlier was referred for a mass in the left axilla. Fine needle aspiration showed a granulomatous reaction to birefringent material with predominance of foreign body giant cells in a lymphoid background. CONCLUSION: This report illustrates the usefulness of fine needle aspiration in axillary nodes of patients with breast implants in ruling out malignancy an

Microvascular anastomoses. An evaluation of laser-assisted technique.

The carbon dioxide milliwatt laser was used to perform microvascular anastomoses in 23 rat femoral arteries and 21 femoral veins. This technique was compared with conventionally sutured controls and then evaluated histologically at intervals of three to four days and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks postoperatively. Patency rates in both methods, for arteries and veins, were comparable, confirming the feasibility of laser-assisted microvascular anastomoses. Moreover, the major benefit of the laser procedure was to allow for fewer sutures, thereby diminishing a foreign body reaction.

[Basic research in ultrasound surgery. VII. Comparative animal experiments after intestinal anastomosis by suturing, ligament gluing with Fimomed and ultrasound sealing with ligament Fimomed].

Animal experimental anastomoses in the small intestine of Mini-Lewe-pigs showed that even sufficient anastomoses free of stenosis can be obtained by using the sticking respectively the ultrasound sealing method. The foreign-body reaction in the surroundings of the suture was approximately equally strong as on the gluten. All animals did not show any specialty in the postoperative course. The use of butylcyanidacrylic is possible in the human intestine as also shown in the literature. The use is indicated if advantages are to be expected in face of a suture anastomosis in clinical sight.

The mode of action of IUDs.

In women, IUDs produce alterations of the uterine environment in terms of a pronounced foreign body reaction. This biological response may interfere with steps of the reproductive process that normally take place before the ovum reaches the uterine cavity. In order to discuss this hypothesis on the mechanism of action of IUDs, this review is focussed on 1) detection in urine and blood of substances alleged to be specifically produced by the embryo, 2) migration of gametes in the female genital tract, and 3) microscopic features of ova recovered from the genital tract.

Pulmonary capillariasis in a child in Iran.

A 9-year-old boy in Teheran, Iran developed severe asthmatic symptoms, productive cough, and moderate eosinophilia. Lung biopsy demonstrated a helminth in a granulomatous lesion with foreign-body type cellular reaction leading to a tentative diagnosis of visceral larva migrans. Diethylcarbamazine, thiabendazole, and steroids were given, rapidly relieving the symptoms. In a subsequent review of the biopsy the helminth was identified as a Capillaria, probably Capillaria (Thominx) aerophila, a nematode parasite of dogs, cats, and other carnivores, apparently the ninth such infection to be reporte

Total hip arthroplasty with ceramic-on-ceramic bearing failure from third-body wear.

This article describes a new mechanism of failure of a ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to fretting corrosion and failure of the Morse taper. A 46-year-old man with hip osteonecrosis underwent THA in 2006. A ceramic-on-ceramic, un-cemented THA with a titanium femoral component and metal-on-ceramic Morse taper was implanted. Two years postoperatively, he presented with swelling in his groin and a painless medial thigh mass. The thigh mass was diagnosed as an abscess. Incision and drainage was performed and resulted in a sinus tract that continuously drained copious amounts of

Effects of Chemical Pretreatments of Wood Cellulose Nanofibrils on Protein Adsorption and Biological Outcomes.

Wood-based nanocellulose is emerging as a promising nanomaterial in the field of tissue engineering due to its unique properties and versatile applications. Previously, we used TEMPO-mediated oxidation (TO) and carboxymethylation (CM) as chemical pretreatments prior to mechanical fibrillation of wood-based cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) to produce scaffolds with different surface chemistries. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of these chemical pretreatments on serum protein adsorption on 2D and 3D configurations of TO-CNF and CM-CNF and then to investigate their effects on
