Background: The most common types of wrist dislocation are trans-scaphoid lunate dislocation (TLD) and trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation, in which the lunate and proximal scaphoid are dislocated through the midcarpal joint. There is another rare type of dislocation in which the proximal carpi are dislocated through the radiocarpal joint. The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical features of this type of dislocation. Methods: Six cases of the proximal carpal fracture dislocation via the radiocarpal joint were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent open reduction and int…

INTRODUCTION: This study delves into the management of acromion fractures and acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations-orthopedic injuries with significant implications for shoulder function. Despite their infrequency, these injuries present challenges due to potential persistent pain and functional limitations. Current treatment strategies span from conservative measures to surgical interventions, yet there exists a notable gap in comprehensive data on specific surgical approaches.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a compelling case involving a 38-year-old male athlete who sought medical att

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Lumbar facet fracture-dislocation is rare, often due to hyperflexion with rotational force. Abnormal scoliosis on radiography is a key sign, prompting further imaging. Facetectomy and laminectomy ensure safe reduction, while instrumented fusion is an effective surgical treatment.
ABSTRACT: Traumatic lumbar facet dislocation is an uncommon condition, particularly when unilateral lumbar facet dislocation is accompanied by a contralateral facet fracture. The patient had a locked facet joint at the left L4-L5, a fracture of the right superior articular process of L5 and a co

Background: Perilunate fracture-dislocations are frequently associated with a high risk of developing post-traumatic arthritis. Current studies indicate that during mid-term follow-ups, radiological signs of arthritis do not appear to correspond with functional score. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of posttraumatic arthritis and the wrist function after perilunate dislocations (PLD) and fracture dislocations at a mid-term follow-up of 7 years. Methods: We report the clinical and radiological outcomes of 17 wrists treated for PLD or fracture-dislocation by open reduction and…

INTRODUCTION: The most commonly used Bado classification encompasses the large majority of Monteggia fractures, however, certain patterns cannot be classified with this system. Monteggia injuries and Monteggia-Variants are uncommon but serious injuries that can have dire consequences if not identified and treated appropriately. This paper aims to review relevant literature, discuss current classification systems, and present a case of an atypical fracture pattern.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of a unique Monteggia variant in an adult that to our knowledge has not been discussed in

BACKGROUND: Neglected fracture-dislocation thoracic spine without neurological deficit is an extremely rare injury. Current studies reveal that global sagittal balance is very important for quality of life (QOL). Complex deformity causes difficulty with dissection in the surgical planning and type of spinal osteotomy. Restoration of global balance parameters are related to a successful outcome, if the surgeon understands the morphology of complex bone deformity and the surgical tactics of spinal osteotomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old female presented with untreated thoracic kyphotic defo

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effectiveness of open reduction and internal fixation for bipolar fracture-dislocation of the forearm.
METHODS: Between June 2014 and March 2019, 14 patients with bipolar fracture-dislocation of the forearm were treated. There were 9 males and 5 females, aged from 19 to 52 years (mean, 34.9 years). There were 8 cases of falling injuries, 4 cases of traffic accident injuries, 1 case of sports injury, and 1 case of machine strangulation injury. The time from injury to admission was 2-48 hours, with an average of 16.6 hours. All patients were closed injuries. All patien

CASE: A 7-year-old boy sustained a Monteggia fracture-dislocation. Corrective osteotomy of the ulna was performed to restore proper forearm anatomy and achieve radial head reduction. Recurrent radial head instability was noted postoperatively, and magnetic resonance imaging indicated recurrent dislocation of the radial head with, notably, an entrapped brachialis tendon and annular ligament. Open reduction of the elbow was performed. Anatomic reduction of the radiocapitellar joint and full range of motion without instability was achieved.
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the f

INTRODUCTION: Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) is one of the joints exposed to upper limb injury. The dorsal fracture-dislocations of the PIP is a common injury. Treatment of cases with small avulsed bone fragments is challenging. Stable fixation with rapid recovery is important in these patients.
HYPOTHESIS: Volar buttress plating a new technique in treatment of the dorsal proximal interphalangeal joint fracture dislocations but the results of it is unknown.
METHODS: In this case series, 21 patients with dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal were studied. We used …

BACKGROUND: Locked posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulder (LPFDS) is a very rare injury that occurs predominantly in young patients following high-energy trauma. The long-term outcome of the treatment of this injury is often poor. This study sought to present the characteristics of injury, discuss the pathological anatomy, and to report the treatment outcomes of our case series.
METHODS: Between January 2012 and May 2018, a total of 234 patients who underwent surgical treatment for proximal humerus fractures were reviewed. Among them, six patients (mean age, 54.7 years; range, 35-76 y

PURPOSE: The human capability to detect the degree of zygomatico-orbital (ZMO) fracture-dislocation in surgical treatment is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between ZMO fracture-dislocation and injury etiology and treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We implemented a retrospective cross-sectional study, enrolled a sample composed of patients with an isolated unilateral ZMO fracture, and analyzed fracture-dislocation from computed tomography images with an automatic algorithm. The primary predictor variable was mean surface point-to-point dislocation (the mean distan

Acromioclavicular dislocation combined with a midshaft clavicle fracture is a rare traumatic shoulder problem. Various treatment options have been described in literature. We describe a new technique using a hook plate and coracoclavicular sling to replace the ruptured coracoclavicular ligaments in combination with plate osteosynthesis of the clavicle fracture. Furthermore, we provide a short overview of the few cases described in literature and their treatment options.

Dislocation of the ankle without fracture is very uncommon. There are only few reports in the international literature. Up to now approximately 80 cases are published. The risk of hyperflexion and -inversion of the ankle seems high on a trampoline. A multiple of the jumper's body-weight projects delayed on the upper ankle joint while dipping in the trampoline-sheet. Reduction should be performed as fast as possible to ensure a good clinical outcome. Imaging via MRI and CT scan allows a detailed evaluation of the injury severity. The decision for further treatment should be based on the finding

This rare case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of an isolated left-sided orbital floor fracture with a complete dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus and briefly discusses the indications of surgery and recovery for orbital floor fractures in general. Complete herniation of the globe through an orbital blow-out fracture is uncommon. However, the current case illustrates that such an occurrence should be in the differential diagnosis and should be considered, especially following high speed/impact injuries involving a foreign object. In these rare cases, surgical interv

Background and purpose - Previous reports on elbow injuries with concomitant comminute radial head fracture are difficult to interpret, since they include an array of different soft-tissue and bony injuries around the elbow. We focused on Mason-IV fracture dislocations of the elbow and retrospectively reviewed 2 treatment options: radial head resection or replacement with a radial head arthroplasty, both in combination with lateral ligament repair. Patients and methods - In Linköping, 18 consecutive patients with Mason-IV fracture dislocation and with a median age of 56 (19-79) years were trea…

This study was conducted to explore epidemiologic features of traumatic elbow dislocation with associated fractures in pediatric population following appropriate treatment options.Incidence of elbow dislocation with associated fractures was analyzed in 67 children using elbow radiographs. Treatment for the displaced elbow joint was performed by closed reduction and proper immobilization. Surgical intervention was applied to restore the correct alignment of the fracture. Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) was used to measure elbow joint function.Incidence of pure dislocation was observed in 7

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures account for approximately 4-6% of all fractures. While the majority of these fractures are treated non-operatively, the amount of fracture displacement, concomitant injuries, and patient factors often result in the need for surgical stabilization. Although concomitant neurovascular injury in the setting of low-energy trauma is rare, injury to the surrounding neurovascular structures have previously been reported.
METHODS: We report a case of a 79-year-old male who sustained a low energy fall resulting in a two-part fracture dislocation of the proximal hu…

Paediatric Chance fracture are rare lesions but often associated with abdominal injuries. We herein present the case of a seven years old patient who sustained an entrapment of small bowel and an ureteropelvic disruption associated with a Chance fracture and spine dislocation following a traffic accident. Initial X-rays and computed tomographic (CT) scan showed a Chance fracture with dislocation of L3 vertebra, with an incarceration of a small bowel loop in the spinal canal and a complete section of the left lumbar ureter. Paraplegia was noticed on the initial neurological examination. A poste
