Clinical results of closed versus mini-open reduction with percutaneous pinning for supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children: A retrospective case-control study.

To compare the clinical outcomes of 2 procedures, closed or mini-open reduction with percutaneous pinning (ORPP), for the treatment of supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children.Patients aged less than 15 years who had undergone surgery for supracondylar fracture of the humerus between 2004 and 2013 were identified. The case records and radiographs from 34 patients were reviewed. Twenty-one patients had undergone closed reduction followed by percutaneous pinning (CRPP), while 13 had undergone mini-open reduction through the anterior approach with percutaneous pinning (mini-ORPP). The a

The effect of intact fibula on functional outcome of reamed intramedullary interlocking nail in open and closed isolated tibial shaft fractures: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Isolated tibial shaft (ITS) fracture with intact fibula is a common injury but records often fail to mention it. Our primary aim was to study the effect of the intact fibula in ITS fractures in closed and open injuries and that these fractures can unite without a primary fibulectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 56 patients who sustained an ITS fracture with an intact fibula who underwent closed or open reduction and reamed intramedullary interlocking nailing (IM IL nail) for closed and open fractures between August 2008 and April 2014 were included in this study. Four patients were los

Conservative management of thoracolumbar and lumbar spine compression and burst fractures: functional and radiographic outcomes in 136 cases treated by closed reduction and casting.

INTRODUCTION: Both fractures of the lumbar spine and at the thoracolumbar junction are quite common. The treatment of these fracture types is discussed controversially. Some authors advocate surgical treatment even in fractures without neurologic compromise while other series report good results after non-operative treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 1997 and April 2004, 324 patients with spinal fractures were admitted to our institution. Hundred and thirty-six patients with compression and burst type fractures treated by closed reduction and casting were available for follow-up

Effect of closed reduction and external fixation in elderly patients with anterior shoulder dislocation combined with humeral surgical neck fracture: a retrospective cohort study based on fracture-dislocation classification.

BACKGROUND: Anterior shoulder dislocation combined with humeral surgical neck fracture is a severe injury that often requires emergency surgery. However, for some patients, such as those of advanced age or with surgical contraindications, closed reduction can be considered. This retrospective cohort study aimed to confirm the feasibility and clinical outcomes of the closed reduction technique with effective external fixation for the treatment of anterior shoulder dislocation combined with humeral surgical neck fracture in elderly patients. METHOD: From January 2010 to March 2024, a total of 5

Early functional and operative outcomes of three open surgical approaches compared with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning in Gartland type III pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures.

Supracondylar humerus fractures (SHFs) are commonly treated with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP); however, open reduction is required in selected cases. To compare early functional and operative outcomes of anterior, lateral, and posterior open reduction techniques, using CRPP as a reference standard. This retrospective study included 60 pediatric patients with Gartland type III SHFs (CRPP, n = 15; anterior, n = 15; lateral, n = 15; posterior, n = 15). Outcomes included operative time, fluoroscopy use, union time, joint range of motion, Flynn functional and cosmetic scores, an

Management of Extra-articular Distal Femoral Fractures Through Closed Reduction and Internal Fixation Using Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis Versus Retrograde Intramedullary Nailing: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Distal femoral fractures (DFFs) account for a small proportion of femoral fractures and can be challenging to manage. The goal of treatment is to restore alignment, length, and function while minimizing soft-tissue disruption. Two common fixation options are minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and retrograde intramedullary nailing (RIMN). This study prospectively compared the outcomes of both techniques in extra-articular DFFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective comparative study was conducted on 40 adult patients with extra-articular DFFs (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Ost

Closed Reduction Percutaneous Pinning Versus Open Reduction With Plate and Screw Fixation in Management of Unstable Proximal Phalangeal Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Proximal phalanx fractures are common, with surgical fixation indicated for unstable fractures. Traditionally, closed reduction percutaneous pinning (CRPP) resulted in decreased stiffness and tendon irritation compared to open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). We hypothesized that more recent studies would have more similar outcomes to CRPP. The purpose of this study was to compare CRPP and ORIF in terms of range of motion, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores, and complications. METHODS: Four electronic databases were queried from 2010 to present. Following

Retrospective chart review of perioperative pain management of patients having surgery for closed ankle fractures using peripheral nerve blocks at a level one trauma center.

UNLABELLED: Chronic opioid use is unfortunately perceived among these postoperative patients, specifically within orthopedic surgery. Patients having orthopedic surgeries are at risk for becoming addicted to opioids, and one benefit of peripheral nerves blocks could be to provide an alternative mode of pain control. This study takes a retrospective look at the use of peripheral nerve blocks for pain control following surgery for isolated traumatic ankle injuries. We hypothesize that when peripheral nerve blocks are administered preoperatively to patients with closed ankle fractures, they will

Outcomes After Surgically Managed Oblique Extra-Articular Proximal Phalanx Fractures: A Comparison of Closed-Reduction Percutaneous Pinning and Open-Reduction Internal Fixation With Lag Screws.

BACKGROUND: Long oblique extra-articular proximal phalanx fractures are common orthopedic injuries. When unstable and without substantial comminution, treatment options include closed-reduction percutaneous pinning (CRPP) and open-reduction internal fixation using lag screws (ORIF-screws). The aims of this study are primarily to compare the functional outcomes and complication rates between these techniques and secondarily to assess potential factors affecting outcomes after surgery. METHODS: All patients with long oblique extra-articular proximal phalanx fractures treated surgically within a

Suboptimal outcomes after closed reduction and internal fixation of displaced femoral neck fractures in middle-aged patients: is internal fixation adequate in this age group?

BACKGROUND: There have been many studies regarding nongeriatric femoral neck fractures (FNFs), which included patients of a wide age range (between 20 and 60 years old). We aimed to determine whether internal fixation provided acceptable outcomes for middle-aged patients with displaced FNFs, and identify predictors of successful internal fixation. METHODS: A total of 117 patients, aged 50-60 years and who underwent closed reduction and unilateral internal fixation using cannulated screws, were included. The outcomes were classified as either "complications" (varus malunion, femoral neck short

Graded motor imagery for women at risk for developing type I CRPS following closed treatment of distal radius fractures: a randomized comparative effectiveness trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRF) account for nearly one-fifth of all fractures in older adults, and women experience them 5× as often as men. Most DRF occur with low impact injuries to the wrist with an outstretched hand, and are often managed via closed treatment and cast immobilization. Women sustaining a DRF are at risk for upper limb immobility, sensorimotor changes, edema and type I complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Since CRPS onset is likely influenced by alterations in the brain's somatosensory region, a rehabilitation intervention, Graded Motor Imagery (GMI), aims to rest

Effect of Ultrasound-Guided Lateral Infraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block With Lidocaine or Ropivacaine for Closed Reduction of Distal Radius Fractures: A Randomized Controlled Noninferiority Trial.

BACKGROUND: Closed reduction of distal radius fractures is painful, and current analgesic strategies may be inadequate. Ultrasound-guided lateral infraclavicular brachial plexus block may offer complete analgesia and muscle relaxation, potentially improving patient comfort and reduction quality. However, benefits and challenges regarding anesthetic agents for this procedure remain unclear. METHODS: In this randomized, controlled, blinded, noninferiority trial, 63 adults with distal radius fractures requiring closed reduction received a lateral infraclavicular block with either 30 mL of ropiva

Clinical results of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis versus conventional approach in volar locking plate fixation for closed distal radius fractures under wide-awake local anesthesia.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has been introduced as an alternative technique for distal radius fracture fixation, aiming to minimize surgical trauma while preserving soft tissue integrity. The Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) method enables intraoperative functional assessment and early active wrist motion. Comparative evidence between MIPO and conventional volar plate fixation performed under WALANT remains limited. METHODS: A single-center, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted between October 2021 and February 2023. Sixty-s
