Upper thermal tolerance of the euryhaline fish Fundulus heteroclitus is lower in freshwater and shaped by environmental salinity-acclimation time interaction.

This study investigates whether salinity affects the upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) of the euryhaline mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus). Mummichogs were acclimated to seawater (38 ppt, SW) or freshwater (<1 ppt, FW) at 18.5°C (Tacc), then transferred to the opposite salinity. CTmax and physiological profiles were assessed on days 0, 1, 3, 6, and 13 post-transfer. CTmax was consistently lower in FW than in SW, regardless of prior acclimation. Compared to the Tacc controls, CTmax exposure reduced plasma ion levels in FW-transferred fish and increased them in SW-transferred fish. In both salinit

A Targeted Mitigation Strategy for Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms through the Release of a Small-Molecule Polyphenolic Algaecide from Clay Nanotubes.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Microcystis aeruginosa (MC) pose serious threats to freshwater ecosystems, public health, and water treatment infrastructure. Here, we present a targeted mitigation technology involving flocculation and settling of MC using a flocculant, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), and a nanotubular clay, halloysite, which serves both as a ballast to aid settling of the flocs and as a reservoir to deliver algaecides. The tubular morphology of halloysite allows loading of algaecide, thus constituting a targeted release of algaecide to MC cells in the floc. The specific alg

Natural variation in temperature drives thermal preference in a freshwater fish, independent of infection status.

Aquatic environments are often thermally variable, and ectotherms may select thermal habitats based on their physiological state. However, it remains unclear whether immune reactions and sickness behaviours, including behavioural fever or chill, drive temperature preference and what role natural temperature shifts play in thermal choice. We used a shuttle box system to determine temperature preference in wild-caught pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, that were: (i) naturally co-infected by parasitic helminths; (ii) experimentally infected with trematodes, or (iii) immune challenged through

A first report of Biomphalaria pfeifferi in the Lower Shire Valley, Southern Malawi, a major intermediate snail host species for intestinal schistosomiasis.

The distribution of certain permissive intermediate snail host species in freshwater is a crucial factor shaping transmission of intestinal schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that causes much human suffering in Africa. To shed new light on southern Malawi, where cases of intestinal schistosomiasis have been found, repeated malacological surveys were conducted in Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts in the Lower Shire Valley, to detect and to characterize populations of Biomphalaria, the intermediate host for intestinal schistosomiasis. Sampling took place across a total of 45 freshwater si

Morphological and molecular analysis of Spinitectus notopteri (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae) from freshwater fish in Thailand.

The nematode Spinitectus notopteri Karve et Naik, 1951 was collected from two species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Notopteridae, namely Chitala ornata (Gray) and Notopterus notopterus (Pallas), at Khun Thale Swamp in Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. The overall prevalence of the parasite was found to be 88% (94 fish infected/106 fish examined). A higher prevalence was found in C. ornata (96%), while a higher intensity was noted for N. notopterus (117 parasites/fish). The most important morphological characters were the presence of cephalic and cuticular structures, prec

The incomparable fascination of comparative physiology: 40 years with animals in the field and laboratory.

This paper is not meant to be a review article. Instead, it gives an overview of the major research projects that the author, together with his students, colleagues and collaborators, has worked on. Although the main focus of the author's work has always been the fish lateral line, this paper is mainly about all the other research projects he did or that were done in his laboratory. These include studies on fishing spiders, weakly electric fish, seals, water rats, bottom dwelling sharks, freshwater rays, venomous snakes, birds of prey, fire loving beetles and backswimmers. The reasons for this

Uptake without inactivation of human adenovirus type 2 by Tetrahymena pyriformis ciliates.

Human adenoviruses are ubiquitous contaminants of surface water. Indigenous protists may interact with adenoviruses and contribute to their removal from the water column, though the associated kinetics and mechanisms differ between protist species. In this work, we investigated the interaction of human adenovirus type 2 (HAdV2) with the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis. In co-incubation experiments in a freshwater matrix, T. pyriformis was found to efficiently remove HAdV2 from the aqueous phase, with ≥4 log10 removal over 72 hours. Neither sorption onto the ciliate nor secreted compounds contri

Fish-associated Streptococcus agalactiae ST283: first human cases reported from Malaysia.

In South East Asia, Streptococcus agalactiae ST283 causes sepsis in healthy adults. Raw freshwater fish consumption is the only known risk factor. These two case reports are the first from Malaysia. Although they cluster with Singapore ST283, the epidemiology is complicated by the flow of people and fish across borders.

Toxic responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana due to exposure of flame retardants.

Flame retardants, such as Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) and tributyl phosphate (TBP), are frequently detected in surface water. However, the effects of FRs exposure on aquatic organisms especially freshwater microalgae are still unclear. In this study, the toxicities of TBBPA, TDCPP and TBP to microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana, in terms of growth inhibition, photosynthetic activity inhibition and oxidative damage, were investigated, and according ecological risks were assessed. The results showed that TBBPA, TDCPP and TBP had inhibitory effects on

Comparative mitogenomics of freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus, obligatory vectors of Schistosoma haematobium, causative agent of human urogenital schistosomiasis.

Among the snail genera most responsible for vectoring human-infecting schistosomes, Bulinus, Biomphalaria, and Oncomelania, the former is in many respects the most important. Bulinid snails host the most common human blood fluke, Schistosoma haematobium, responsible for approximately two-thirds of the estimated 237 million cases of schistosomiasis. They also support transmission of schistosomes to millions of domestic and wild animals. Nonetheless, our basic knowledge of the 37 Bulinus species remains incomplete, especially with respect to genome information, even including mitogenome sequence

A cross-sectional study on infectious health risks regarding freshwater sports practice in Brittany, France.

Freshwater sports expose practitioners to pathogens in the water environment and may result in infection. In French Brittany, these infections are particularly worrying, especially since 2016 with an increase in the incidence of leptospirosis reaching 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents the highest incidence observed since 1920. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of infectious diseases related to freshwater sports practice and to identify the factors associated with these infections among freshwater sports licensees in Brittany, France. From March 18, 2019, to May 8, 2019, we int

Brothers are better than nothing: first report of incestuous mating and inbreeding depression in a freshwater decapod crustacean.

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of one generation of full-sibling mating on traits related to the fitness of the gregarious freshwater shrimp Neocaridina davidi, both under optimal and stressful (i.e. starvation) laboratory conditions. Females were maintained either with their brothers (Inbreeding treatment) or non-brothers (Outbreeding treatment), and the first and second broods were used to evaluate egg production and juvenile quality, respectively. The latter was analyzed in a 60-day period following hatching under optimal rearing conditions, and in a 20-day period following hatch

Comparative neuroanatomical distribution and expression levels of neuropeptide F in the central nervous system of the female freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, during the ovarian cycle.

Neuropeptide F (NPF) plays critical roles in controlling the feeding and reproduction of prawns. In the present study, we investigated changes in the expression levels of Macrobrachium rosenbergii neuropeptide F (MrNPF), and its neuroanatomical distribution in eyestalk (ES), brain (BR), subesophageal ganglion (SEG), thoracic ganglia (TG), and abdominal ganglia (AG), during the ovarian cycle of female prawn. By qRT-PCR, the amount of MrNPF transcripts exhibited a gradual increase in the ES, BR, and combined SEG and TG from stages I and II, to reach a maximum level at stage III, and slightly dec

Rapid divergent coevolution of Sinopotamon freshwater crab genitalia facilitates a burst of species diversification.

One of the most striking radiations in brachyuran evolution is the considerable morphological diversification of the external reproductive structures of primary freshwater crabs: the male first gonopod (G1) and the female vulva (FV). However, the lack of quantitative studies, especially the lack of data on female genitalia, has seriously limited our understanding of genital evolution in these lineages. Here we examined 69 species of the large Chinese potamid freshwater crab genus Sinopotamon Bott, 1967 (more than 80% of the described species). We used a landmark-based geometric morphometric ap

Gnathostomiasis acquired after consumption of raw freshwater fish in the Amazon region: a report of two cases in Brazil.

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the helminth Gnathostoma spp., acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked contaminated aquatic animals. The disease is endemic in Southeast Asia and Central America. Two male patients, both middle-aged, presented with single itchy erythemato-edematous plaques on the anterior thorax and left flank. Both had consumed raw fish in the Amazon region. The clinical and epidemiological examinations suggested gnathostomiasis, and treatment with albendazole caused total regression of the lesions. Health teams should be familiar with the diseas

Decay of infectious adenovirus and coliphages in freshwater habitats is differentially affected by ambient sunlight and the presence of indigenous protozoa communities.

BACKGROUND: Sanitary quality of recreational waters worldwide is assessed using fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), such as Escherichia coli and enterococci. However, fate and transport characteristics of FIB in aquatic habitats can differ from those of viral pathogens which have been identified as main etiologic agents of recreational waterborne illness. Coliphages (bacteriophages infecting E. coli) are an attractive alternative to FIB because of their many morphological and structural similarities to viral pathogens. METHODS: In this in situ field study, we used a submersible aquatic mesocosm t

A New Species of Synbranchiella (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from the Mountain Mullet ( Dajaus monticola) in Costa Rica.

A new species of the recently erected genus of proteocephalid cestodes, Synbranchiella Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , is described based on specimens found in the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola (Bancroft, 1834), from Costa Rica. The new species is placed in Synbranchiella because of the cortical position of the genital organs (typical of the former subfamily Monticelliinae); a robust scolex (lacking a metascolex) having a dome-shaped apex and biloculate suckers (lacking free posterior margins); vitelline follicles in 2 narrow lateral bands; a vagina always anterior to the cir
