The importance of social context in understanding and promoting low-income immigrant women's health.

Understanding the social context and realities of Cape Verdean women in the U.S. as well as other immigrant and ethnic/racial groups is important to promote their overall health and well-being more effectively. The aim of this study was to gain a contextual understanding from the perspectives of health promoters who work with marginalized women. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine Cape Verdean women health promoters about their perspectives and experiences of health promotion practice with immigrant women in their community. Using a Glaserian grounded theory approach

Navigating technology-facilitated abuse: A participatory action research study with young adults living with HIV and key populations in Kenya.

For young adults living with HIV and key populations, digital platforms are essential tools for accessing health information, services, and navigating stigmatized health needs. However, these technologies expose them to digital harms such as technology-facilitated abuse (TFA). Research on TFA has largely focussed on gender-based violence with limited exploration of experiences of criminalised and stigmatised populations. This paper reports findings from Kenya as part of the Digital Health and Rights Project (DHRP), a four-country study conducted in Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, and Vietnam. The stud…

Invisible harm and constrained response: a conceptual analysis of psychological domestic abuse against disabled people in China.

Psychological domestic abuse against disabled people is under-recognised at the intersection of violence prevention, public mental health, and disability policy. Here, invisible harm does not mean wholly unseen harm; it denotes cumulative abuse that remains difficult for victims, social networks, and institutions to identify or translate into action. Constrained response denotes the linked restrictions on recognition and disclosure, evidentiary translation, and safe exit. This conceptual analysis synthesises Chinese law and policy, official statistics, reported judicial and legal-aid cases, an

Social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV healthcare and harm reduction services for people experiencing syndemics in Manitoba: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Manitoba, Canada, there has been an increase in the number of people newly diagnosed with HIV and those not returning for regular HIV care. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased sex and gender disparities in disease risk and mortalities, decreased harm reduction services and reduced access to healthcare. These health crises intersect with increased drug use and drug poisoning deaths, houselessness and other structural and social factors most acutely among historically underserved groups. We aim to explore the social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV care an

Contextualizing gender differences and methamphetamine use with HIV prevalence within a South African community.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted in a large Black African township outside of Cape Town, South Africa, where HIV infection has been endemic at extremely high levels for years. Problems associated with high HIV prevalence are compounded by gender inequality and high rates of gender-based violence exacerbated by heavy alcohol use and increasing methamphetamine use. METHODS: Informal drinking establishments (known as shebeens) were geocoded and mapped. Based on visual examination, we identified 36 neighbourhoods, each of which contained between three to seven drinking venues clustered togeth…

Forced marriage, domestic violence, and suicidal ideation among married individuals: a population-based study from Western Iran.

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a critical public health issue worldwide. In Iran, particularly in the western province of Kermanshah, forced marriage and domestic violence are prevalent social problems that may contribute to suicidal ideation among married individuals. This study aimed to examine the association between forced marriage, physical intimate partner violence (IPV), and suicidal ideation, while exploring the protective roles of social support and resilience. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in 2024 with 369 married adults aged 18-59 years from Kermansha

The influence of hate speech on adolescents' bystander intention and TNB aggression.

Although the visibility of trans and non-binary (TNB) individuals has increased in recent years, gender identity-based discrimination remains a significant social issue. However, there is an important gap in the research examining the mechanisms involved in TNB aggression. This study longitudinally analyzed the relationship between exposure to hate speech across different contexts and bystander intentions and aggression toward TNB individuals. Additionally, gender invariance was tested. A total of 755 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years (Mage = 16.28; SD = 0.88; 50.8% identified as girls, 48.7% as

A Comparative Analysis of the Critical Resilience and Gender Equity of Mothers Impacted by Albinism: Promising Practices From Tanzania and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Women bear the brunt of human rights violations faced by persons with albinism, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to insufficient access to skin and eye care, increased rates of skin cancer, stigma and discrimination, and threats of mutilation and murder as they are reportedly trafficked for economic gain, they face heightened gender-based violence linked to misbeliefs about albinism. This study explored through a human rights lens the resilience of mothers affected by albinism, at the intersection of gender, colorism, and religion in Tanzania and South Africa. METHODS…

Intersecting social-ecological vulnerabilities to and lived experiences of sexually transmitted infections among Syrian refugee women in Lebanon: A qualitative study.

Conflict-affected women and girls living in protracted forced displacement settings are vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Yet, little is known about the risk factors for and lived experiences of STIs in complex humanitarian settings, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, where STIs have long been understudied. This qualitative study adapts the social ecological model to characterize the multi-level risks for and lived experiences of STIs among Syrian refugee women resettled in an urban refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon. Adopting a community-based sampling strategy

Domestic Violence Victimization Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China During the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Many countries worldwide have implemented dedicated measures, such as shelter at home, to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. However, those mitigation measures may have major implications for individuals living with someone abusive or controlling. Domestic violence (DV) may be one of the unintended consequences of public health measures due to increased various stressors and reduced access to support and services. There has been a lack of empirical research on DV victimization among gender and sexual minorities, a population vulnerable to interpersonal violence and its associated advers

"Violence. Enough already": findings from a global participatory survey among women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV are vulnerable to gender-based violence (GBV) before and after diagnosis, in multiple settings. This study's aim was to explore how GBV is experienced by women living with HIV, how this affects women's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and human rights (HR), and the implications for policymakers. METHODS: A community-based, participatory, user-led, mixed-methods study was conducted, with women living with HIV from key affected populations. Simple descriptive frequencies were used for quantitative data. Thematic coding of open qualitative responses was pe…

Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic and Latine Adults in New York City: Nativity Differences and Associated Sociodemographic and Behavioral Factors.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant public health concern in New York City (NYC), with psychological and physical abuse highly prevalent. Hispanic and Latine adults may face elevated IPV risk due to gender norms, immigration-related stressors, and barriers to accessing services. However, differences in IPV patterns by nativity remain insufficiently understood. Data from the 2020 NYC Community Health Survey, a population-based survey of non-institutionalized adults, were analyzed. The analytic sample included 2,229 Hispanic and Latine respondents. Weighted descriptive statisti

Sociodemographic and clinical outcome differences among individuals seeking treatment for cocaine use disorders. The intersection of gender and race.

BACKGROUND: Most published treatment trials for cocaine use disorders (CUD) have been conducted with samples composed predominantly of White men and underrepresent women and racial/ethnic minorities. Because of the high prevalence of men and White individuals in CUD treatment trials, results from studies that have compared treatment outcomes by gender and race or ethnicity separately may not be representative of women or racial/ethnic minorities. METHODS: With a sample pooled from seven randomized clinical trials of treatment for CUD (n = 629), baseline characteristics and treatment outcome r

Perilous Pathways: Unveiling the Interplay of Poverty, Catastrophic Health Expenditure, and Intimate Partner Violence in Ethiopia.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a pervasive global issue with profound social, economic, and public health implications. Based on primary data collected with household heads and women aged 18 to 59 years in Ethiopia, this study aims to understand the association between poverty, catastrophic health expenditure (CHE), and IPV. IPV prevalence was estimated by probing if women experienced specific behaviors of economic, psychological, physical, and sexual violence. To measure poverty, this study employs five distinct methods. Firstly, it utilizes household expenditure data to calculate the nat

Building a Sexual and Reproductive Health Module for Implementation in Early Psychosis Programs: A Co-creation Process: Création d'un module sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive à mettre en œuvre dans les programmes d'intervention précoce en cas de psychose : un processus de création conjointe.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with psychosis are at risk for adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) experiences, and for receiving suboptimal SRH care. Early psychosis intervention (EPI) programs offer an opportunity to address SRH early in the illness course, yet SRH is not currently part of routine EPI care. This project sought to develop a SRH module for women, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals for delivery within EPI care. METHODS: To develop the SRH module, an integrated knowledge translation frame was used, informed by a community-based participatory action research approach.

Perinatal mental health among women in Somalia a silent emergency demanding urgent health system action.

Perinatal mental health among women in Somalia represents a critical yet neglected public health emergency shaped by three decades of protracted conflict, gender-based violence, internal displacement, and one of the world's weakest health systems. With a maternal mortality ratio of 621 per 100,000 live births and fewer than 21% of births occurring in health facilities, depression and anxiety affect approximately one in four perinatal women-yet remain entirely absent from routine maternal care. This Perspective examines the structural, policy, and systemic barriers that perpetuate this neglect …
