Ferrous activated sodium percarbonate for controlling sulfide and methane production in sewer sediment.

Methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production from sewers are significantly driven by microbial activities in anaerobic sediments. This study proposes a novel ferrous activated sodium percarbonate advanced oxidation process to inhibit CH4 and H2S production. By targeting microbial activity in the top layer (0-2 cm), the process achieved 74.8 ± 4.3 % and 60.5 ± 2.5 % reductions in CH4 and H2S production, respectively. The generated free radicals (O2-, OH, and CO32-) compromised cellular integrity and disrupted intracellular enzyme systems. Enhanced hydrolytic enzyme activities and inhibit

Source orientation, environmental fate, and risks of antibiotics in the surface water of the largest sediment-laden river.

Antibiotics present a more complex pollution profile in large rivers, particularly in suspended sediment-laden flows. This study quantified 25 antibiotics in surface water samples from the whole sediment-laden Yellow River. A new comprehensive prioritization index (CPI) was developed to identify priority risk control regions. The concentrations of the detected antibiotics ranged from 0.670 to 232 ng/L (mean: 9.62 ng/L), with the highest mean concentration observed for tetracyclines (TCs) at 20.2 ng/L. The most prominent antibiotic pollution was observed in the midstream region, with mean conce

Occurrence and ecological risk assessment of diazepam and its metabolites in aquaculture environment in the Pearl River Delta region.

Diazepam (DIAZ), a widely prescribed benzodiazepine for insomnia and anxiety, has been frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns about potential impacts on human and animal health. To investigate its environmental presence, water and sediment samples were collected from 187 aquaculture ponds across the Pearl River Delta, China. The concentrations of DIAZ and its metabolites-nordazepam (NDZ), oxazepam (OXZ), and temazepam (TEM)-were determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Detection frequencies in water ranged from 0.535 %

Spatial heterogeneity of antibiotic pollution in chinese lakes: A nationwide study with emphasis on arid zones.

Although most previous studies have illustrated the fate of antibiotics in specific lakes, little is known about their distribution from a nationwide scale due to the insufficient knowledge in arid zones, not even to mention declaring the possible impacts driven by both the climate change and anthropogenic activities. To fill this gap, we selected several typical lakes located in arid region of northwestern China-Xinjiang to assess the occurrence and risks of antibiotics in water and sediment, and then to identity the possible influences of parameters focusing on climate change and anthropogen

Mangroves increased the mercury methylation potential in the sediment by producing organic matters and altering microbial methylators community.

Mangrove ecosystem has attracted global attention as a hotspot for mercury (Hg) methylation. Although numerous biotic and abiotic parameters have been reported to influence methylmercury (MeHg) production in sediments, the key factors determining the elevated MeHg levels in mangrove wetlands have not been well addressed. In this study, Hg levels in the sediments from different habitats (mudflats, mangrove fringe, and mangrove interior) in the Futian mangrove wetland were investigated, aiming to characterize the predominant factors affecting the MeHg production and distinguish the key microbial

Unveiling in situ methylmercury production and degradation in aquaculture sediments: Transformation rates, functional genes and microbial methylators.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is recognized as a deleterious neurotoxin with the traits of biomagnification through the food chain and accumulation in edible aquatic products. However, the in situ production of MeHg in aquaculture environments has not been well understood. Herein, the sediments were collected from aquaculture ponds with different rearing operations. Isotope-based tracer analysis showed that Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation rate constants in the aquaculture sediments were 0.001-0.022 d-1 and 0.11-0.40 d-1, respectively. Most of bacterial Hg methylators (> 97.0 %) in aquaculture sed

Biochar as a sustainable amendment for mitigating mercury and methylmercury mobility in contaminated lagoon sediments: insights from incubation experiments.

Mercury (Hg) contaminated sediments may represent a secondary source of contamination, especially under anoxia which promotes the release of Hg, including its most toxic form methylmercury (MeHg), into the water column, posing a risk to marine life and human health. As such, sorbent amendments added to the sediment could be a sustainable approach to mitigate Hg methylation and mobility. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of biochar in reducing Hg and MeHg effluxes at the sediment-water interface (SWI) in a Hg-contaminated fish farm. Incubation experiments compared biochar-amended a

Molecular and trace metal signatures of pristine and anthropogenically altered mangrove sediments.

Mangroves contribute to long-term carbon sequestration and are considered as blue carbon ecosystems; however, they are facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with trace metals emerging as an environmental concern. Despite their toxicological impacts, the mechanisms governing trace metal retention in mangrove sediments require further investigation, particularly their association with natural organic compounds. Here, we employed Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to analyze a wide range of lipids in mangrove sediments from two pristine sites and one anth

Emerging proglacial lake constraints on mercury transport and transform patterns in glacial meltwater runoff on China's Tibetan plateau.

The rapid expansion of proglacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau introduces uncertainties in mercury (Hg) cycling following glacial retreat. This study investigated Hg dynamics in a glacierized watershed by combining comprehensive sampling of glaciers and proglacial lakes to assess their role in Hg transport and methylation. The total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic systems ranged from 0.71 to 3.35 ng/L and 0.01-0.11 ng/L, respectively. Compared with glacial meltwater, glacial lake water contained lower THg concentrations (1.20 ng/L) but higher MeHg concentrations (0.

Individual and combined impacts of carbon dioxide enrichment, heatwaves, flow velocity variability, and fine sediment deposition on stream invertebrate communities.

Climate change and land-use change are widely altering freshwater ecosystem functioning and there is an urgent need to understand how these broad stressor categories may interact in future. While much research has focused on mean temperature increases, climate change also involves increasing variability of both water temperature and flow regimes and increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2, all with potential to alter stream invertebrate communities. Deposited fine sediment is a pervasive land-use stressor with widespread impacts on stream invertebrates. Sedimentation may be managed at the

Deciphering environmental forcings in the distribution of meiofauna and nematodes in mangroves of the Atlantic-Caribbean-East Pacific and Indo-West Pacific regions.

Mangroves develop under environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures whose impact on benthic meiofauna remains poorly understood. It is unclear how meiofauna communities are structured according to local sedimentary conditions. This study was designed to characterize the community structure of meiofauna and nematodes (dominant taxa) and the associated environmental forcings in intertidal mangrove sediments from Mayotte (Indo-West-Pacific), Martinique and Guadeloupe (Caribbean). Sediment cores were sampled at the end of the dry season at low tide on adult mangrove stands with similar im

Uranium Biogeochemistry in the Rhizosphere of a Contaminated Wetland.

The objective of this study was to determine if U sediment concentrations in a U-contaminated wetland located within the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, were greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere. U concentrations were as much as 1100% greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere fractions; however and importantly, not all paired samples followed this trend. Iron (but not C, N, or S) concentrations were significantly enriched in the rhizosphere. XAS analyses showed that in both sediment fractions, U existed as UO22+ coordinated with iron(III)-oxides and organic ma

Geochemical Decoupling of Iron and Zinc during Transformation of Zn-Bearing Ferrihydrite in Reducing Sediments.

The transformation of the mineral ferrihydrite in reducing environments, and its impact on the mobility of incorporated trace metals, has been investigated in model laboratory studies, but studies using complex soil or sediment matrices are lacking. Here, we studied the transformation of zinc (Zn)-bearing ferrihydrite labeled with 57Fe and mixed with natural sediments, incubated in reducing conditions for up to six months. We tracked the evolution of Fe and Zn speciation with 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and with bulk and micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We show that Fe was readily reduced

Antibiotics residues in inland and transitional sediments.

This study assesses the concentrations of a range of antibiotics in riverine and transitional sediments in Ireland. A selection of 12 macrolide, fluoroquinolone, sulphonamide, and diaminopyrimidine antibiotics were quantified in 80 grab surficial sediment samples from around Ireland, selected to investigate areas of potentially higher pollution risk (agriculture, aquaculture, industrial emissions, and wastewater emission points) as well as isolated areas where there are no known pollution sources. Several of the macrolides and sulphonamides/trimethoprim were generally detected more frequently

Non-mercury methylating microbial taxa are integral to understanding links between mercury methylation and elemental cycles in marine and freshwater sediments.

The goal of this study was to explore the role of non-mercury (Hg) methylating taxa in mercury methylation and to identify potential links between elemental cycles and Hg methylation. Statistical approaches were utilized to investigate the microbial community and biochemical functions in relation to methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in marine and freshwater sediments. Sediments were collected from the methylation zone (top 15 cm) in four Hg-contaminated sites. Both abiotic (e.g., sulfate, sulfide, iron, salinity, total organic matter, etc.) and biotic factors (e.g., hgcA, abundances of methy

Global survey of hgcA-carrying genomes in marine and freshwater sediments: Insights into mercury methylation processes.

Mercury (Hg) methylation is a microbially mediated process that produces methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative neurotoxin. A highly conserved gene pair, hgcAB, is required for Hg methylation, which provides a basis for identifying Hg methylators and evaluating their genomic composition. In this study, we conducted a large-scale omics analysis in which 281 metagenomic freshwater and marine sediment samples from 46 geographic locations across the globe were queried. Specific objectives were to examine the prevalence of Hg methylators, to identify horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events involving

Assessment of mercury methylation and methylmercury demethylation potentials in water and sediments along the Wabigoon River system.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) plays a crucial role in the accumulation of mercury (Hg) within aquatic food chains. Since ambient levels of methylmercury are governed by the balance of simultaneous methylation and demethylation processes, determining in situ methylation and demethylation rates is critically important to understand the dynamics of methylmercury in the environment. This is especially important in the Wabigoon River system in Ontario, Canada, which is severely contaminated with Hg by a chlor-alkali facility operating in the 1960s, and still exhibits some of the highest recorded fish me

Biogeochemical controls on methylmercury distribution in a subtropical wetland ecosystem.

Wetlands are widely regarded as biogeochemical hotspots of mercury methylation but little is known regarding such roles of mangrove forests. Here, we examined the detailed depth profile of mercury, methylmercury, and organic matter in surface sediments within an estuarine pond at Mai Po Nature Reserve in Hong Kong, China. There is a progressive enrichment of organic matter in sites closer to mangrove forests, and methylmercury showed a significantly positive correlation with organic matter content (p < 0.001). Methylmercury in sediments is significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the summertime when
