Hepatitis C: current treatments, emerging therapies and tackling health inequities on the path to global elimination.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a significant global health challenge, affecting an estimated 50 million people. In most cases, infection becomes chronic, with long-term risks including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Beyond hepatic complications, many individuals experience non-specific symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive impairment, which can significantly impact daily functioning. The introduction of direct-acting antivirals has transformed HCV management, offering cure rates above 95% with minimal side effects. However, HCV continues to disproportionately affect marginalis…

Global dengue fever management in health systems: identifying strategies, challenges and solutions - a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever, the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral disease, poses a significant global public health challenge. Over the past two decades, its rapid spread has been driven by urbanisation, climate change and international travel, particularly affecting tropical and subtropical regions. Despite its considerable economic burden, effective antiviral treatments and vaccines remain unavailable. This study aims to bridge gaps in dengue fever management by systematically identifying and analysing strategies, challenges and solutions adopted within health systems worldwide. METHOD

Editorial: Global Widening of the Inequitable Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Chasm During COVID-19.

The long-standing and inequitable chasm between clinical need and child and adolescent mental health care has likely widened during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for children and adolescents in developing low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Internationally, the risk for suicidal behaviors among young people rose, while timely access to care worsened.1 People in LMICs are envisioned to be precariously positioned within a perfect storm characterized by greater exposure to life-threatening COVID-19-related social determinants of health that also pose higher risk of new and recurrent men

A global mental health opportunity: How can cultural concepts of distress broaden the construct of immobility?

(Im)mobility studies often focus on people on the move, neglecting those who stay, are immobile, or are trapped. The duality of the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis creates a global mental health challenge, impacting the most structurally oppressed, including immobile populations. The construct of immobility is investigated in the context of socio-political variables but lacks examination of the clinical psychological factors that impact immobility. Research is beginning to identify self-reported emotions that immobile populations experience through describing metaphors like feeling tr

Gender equality does not prevent sexual abuse of women - awareness of a global public health problem.

We examined the prevalence of sexual abuse against women around the world and the protective factors that may prevent this violence. Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 470,000 women in 50 countries informed our multivariate estimates. Our results show that one out of ten women aged 18-49 years old, experienced -at least once in their life time- sexual abuse, and most perpetrators are people in the environment of their victims. We also find that women educational attainment is a key factor in order to prevent sexual abuse, but gender equality achievements in economics, politics and h

Precision global health and comorbidity: a population-based study of 16 357 people in rural Uganda.

In low-income countries, complex comorbidities and weak health systems confound disease diagnosis and treatment. Yet, data-driven approaches have not been applied to develop better diagnostic strategies or to tailor treatment delivery for individuals within rural poor communities. We observed symptoms/diseases reported within three months by 16 357 individuals aged 1+ years in 17 villages of Mayuge District, Uganda. Symptoms were mapped to the Human Phenotype Ontology. Comorbidity networks were constructed. An edge between two symptoms/diseases was generated if the relative risk greater than 1

Antimicrobial Resistance Expressed by Neisseria gonorrhoeae: A Major Global Public Health Problem in the 21st Century.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a strictly human pathogen that is typically transmitted by sexual contact. The associated disease gonorrhea has plagued humankind for thousands of years, with a current estimated incidence of 78 million cases per year. Advances in antimicrobial discovery in the 1920s and 1930s leading to the discovery of sulfonamides and penicillin begun the era of effective antimicrobial treatment of gonorrhea. Unfortunately, the gonococcus developed decreased susceptibility or even resistance to these initially employed antibiotics, a trend that continued over subsequent decades with

The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis: health impact during its first 8 years (2000-2007).

During its first 8 years, the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis provided more than 1900 million treatments with antifilarial drugs (albendazole, ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine) to at least 570 million people in 48 countries with endemic lymphatic filariasis (LF). As a result of this impressive global effort and an unprecedented public-private partnership, 8 years of mass drug administration (MDA) have prevented the spread of filarial infection to an estimated 6.6 million newborns, stopped the progression to clinical morbidity in 9.5 million individuals already infected with

Origins of pandemics: Why ecological disruption is central to global health security and the imperative for proactive prevention.

Pandemics are increasingly recognised as complex ecological and socio-economic phenomena rather than isolated biological events. The emergence of infectious diseases reflects dynamic interactions among humans, animals, and environmental systems, shaped by factors including biodiversity loss, land-use change, climate variability, urbanisation, and intensified human-wildlife contact. This viewpoint examines the evolving understanding of pandemic origins, highlighting the central role of ecological disruption and zoonotic spillover in shaping global health risks. The article further discusses the…

Disaggregating Gender Inequality Globally: Health Systems, Gender Inequality, and Female Pan-Cancer Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Gender inequality shapes women's cancer outcomes through social, economic, and health system factors. This study disaggregated the Gender Inequality Index (GII) to identify which dimensions-reproductive health, educational attainment, workforce participation, and political empowerment-independently influence global female cancer outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an ecologic, cross-national analysis using data from 185 countries. Age-standardized female cancer mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs) were derived from GLOBOCAN 2022. Independent variables included the composite GII and its f

The impact of community water fluoridation cessation on health equity and service utilization: a global scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Community water fluoridation (CWF) is a widely used population-level intervention for preventing dental caries. However, CWF discontinuation is increasingly debated globally, often without a comprehensive synthesis of the subsequent clinical, service-related, economic, and equity implications. We aimed to systematically map and synthesize empirical evidence regarding dental health and service-based outcomes following CWF cessation. METHODS: For this scoping review, we searched 17 bibliographic databases and grey literature from inception through Oct 31, 2025. Eligible studies repo
