Tissue factor pathway inhibitors (TFPIs) are Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitors that reversibly regulate the blood coagulation induced by tissue factor. TFPI family contain two members, TFPI-1 and TFPI-2. Recent studies have shown TFPI-1 and TFPI-2 also play important roles in innate immunity, however, the potential function of teleost TFPI are very limited. In this study, we characterized two TFPI (CsTFPI-1 and CsTFPI-2) molecules from half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), examined their tissue distributions and expression patterns under pathogens stimulation as well as invest

We applied a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and culture to detect Streptococcus pneumoniae and detected 3 other respiratory pathogens--Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Alloiococcus otitidis--simultaneously by PCR, in the nasopharynx of 386 children aged under 5 y. S. pneumoniae was the most common pathogen carried by children in all age groups, with the rate ranging from 15.8% in children aged 3-4 y to 28.6% in children aged 2-3 y. H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis showed similar carriage rates across all the age groups. Only 2 young children (0.5%) carried A. otiti

PURPOSE: To study the microbiological profile of bacterial keratitis in Northern India and to determine the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacterial keratitis isolates to fourth-generation fluoroquinolones.
METHODS: Laboratory records of all consecutive cases of clinically suspected bacterial corneal ulcers were retrospectively reviewed. Data noted included microorganism isolated and antibiotic culture sensitivity to cefazolin, tobramycin, gatifloxacin, and moxifloxacin. In vitro susceptibility toward individual antibiotics was determined and compared with the potential in vitro susceptibi

The Meropenem Yearly Susceptibility Test Information Collection (MYSTIC) Program is a global study that provides antimicrobial susceptibility data in centers prescribing meropenem. The activity of meropenem and 7 broad-spectrum antimicrobials have been examined against 5208 bacterial isolates from 9 Turkish centers between 2000 and 2003. Cumulative susceptibility rates against all species of Enterobacteriaceae combined were ranked as follows: meropenem (99.3%), imipenem (97.6%), cefepime (80.0%), piperacillin-tazobactam (73.6%), ceftazidime (70.3%), ciprofloxacin (70.1%), cefotaxime (66.9%), a

Bacterial infection were found in 35% cases (80 isolates) in which 62,5% (50 isolates) were gram-positive bacteria and 37,5% (30 isolates) were gram-negative bacteria. The microflora of the prepucial sac in 94 children (aged 2 months to 15 years) with acute purulent balanoposthitis (APB) was studied. In the overwhelming majority of cases APB in children was caused by facultative anaerobic and aerobic bacteria (96.7%); of these, Gram positive bacteria occurred most frequently (85.7% of cases). In 51.6% of children these bacteria were represented by staphylococci, constituting 60.3% of all Gram positive flora. Gram negative bacteria were isolated in 40.6% of cases, Escherichia coli taking the first place among them. The isolated microflora was highly resistant

The detection rate of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria in the blood culture was 60.98% and 30.02%, respectively. Medicinal plants have been used empirically since ancient civilizations to alleviate and cure diseases. Secondary metabolites of these plants, such as phenolics and flavonoids, have important anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a public health challenge. The use of plant products presents an alternative in the treatment of resistant microbial infections, provided that these plants are previously evaluated in toxicity tests, ensuring their safe use. In this study, we evaluated the composition and antioxidant, antimicrobial, and

Novel cyclodiphosph(V)azane sulfonamide ligands and their corresponding Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ metal complexes were synthesized and evaluated as antimicrobial additives for coating applications. The structures of the prepared compounds were confirmed using standard spectroscopic techniques. The synthesized compounds were incorporated into paint formulations, and the resulting coatings were systematically assessed for their mechanical, physical, and antimicrobial properties. The modified coatings exhibited enhanced physico-mechanical performance, with gloss values of 80-95, hardness ranging from 7 H to
