We report the case of a kidney transplant recipient who developed Lyme disease, followed by human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) 3 years later. A review of all previously published cases of Lyme disease (3 cases), HGA (5 cases), and human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) (5 cases) in transplant recipients is presented. Manifestations of the cases reviewed were similar to those of non-transplant patients. There appeared to be no obvious correlation between immunosuppression and the occurrence of the illness in the transplant recipients. Serologic testing failed to make a diagnosis in 1 patient wit

The mechanisms by which GM-CSF mediates bacterial clearance and inflammation during mycobacterial infection are poorly understood. The objective of this work was to determine how GM-CSF alters pulmonary mycobacterial infection in vivo. Differences in GM-CSF levels in the lungs of normal mice (GM(+/+)), transgenic GM-CSF-deficient (GM-CSF(-/-)), and transgenic mice with high GM-CSF expression only in lung epithelial cells (SP-C-GM-CSF(+/+)/GM(-/-)) did not affect pulmonary infection rates caused by either the attenuated Mycobacterium bovis BCG or the virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the dynamics of the rectal inflammatory response to rectal gluten challenge in coeliac disease by measuring inflammatory mediators released by activated neutrophils, eosinophils and mast cells/basophils.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The release of myeloperoxidase (MPO), eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) and histamine was measured continuously during the early challenge period (3-6 h after gluten challenge) in coeliac patients (n = 9) and healthy controls (n = 5). A segmental perfusion technique was used to carry out this part of the study. Another method, the mucosal patch

Granulocytic sarcoma of the female genital tract is a rare occurrence. A case of a perimenopausal female is presented who reported with a history of menorrhagia with a lump in the abdomen. A diagnosis of fibroid uterus was made but laparotomy findings were suggestive of inoperable ovarian malignancy with metastases. Postoperatively the patient suddenly became very anemic. Hematological investigations and histopathological reports from ovaries, myometrium, endometrium and intraperitoneal deposits all revealed acute myeloid leukemia. The patient received two cycles of chemotherapy but later succ

We present the management of agranulocytosis and neutropenic sepsis secondary to carbimazole with recombinant human granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). A 72-year-old woman with a history of thyrotoxicosis presented with sore throat and fever two weeks after starting carbimazole. Investigations confirmed a leucopenia and neutropenia. G-CSF was used as an adjunctive therapy with discontinuation of carbimazole, barrier nursing and a broad-spectrum antibiotic regimen to treat her neutropenic sepsis. Total white cell count and neutrophil count returned to normal and she made an uneventfu

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by reticulate skin pigmentation, nail dystrophy, mucosal leucoplakia, and bone marrow failure. Pancytopenia is difficult to manage in patients with this disorder. We describe a 13-month-old-boy who presented with reticulate skin lesions, paleness, and hepatosplenomegaly. Anemia and leukopenia developed by the age of 43 months. The patient was treated with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) (5 microg/kg/d, subcutaneously) for 19 months and erythropoietin (150 U/kg 3 days in a week, subcutaneously) for

Maxillofacial injuries in general occur quite commonly following trauma and these injuries if not properly managed can negatively influence both the psychosocial and functional activities of the patient. This is as a result of the centrality of the facial region as a key factor in human identity, aesthetics, and general well-being. Fractures involving the facial skeleton may be isolated or complex. High velocity trauma is usually seen in urban and semi-urban areas while low velocity trauma is the common setting in rural areas. The pattern of faciomaxillary fractures vary with geographical area

We developed a flow cytometric method for the enumeration and classification of nonmalignant immature granulocytes (IG). In this study, IG are defined as most immature (IG stage 1: promyelocytes and myelocytes) and as more mature (IG stage 2: metamyelocytes). Blood specimens from 46 patients with documented infectious or inflammatory disease and known presence of IG (by routine manual microscopy) were analyzed. For a reference manual differential count, we used a 400 white blood cell (WBC) differential and separated granulocytes into promyelocytes and myelocytes combined, metamyelocytes, and i…

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been identified as a potentially important mediator of intercellular communication in the female reproductive tract, with principal target cells being the large populations of myeloid leukocytes in the cycling and pregnant uterus, the preimplantation embryo, and trophoblast cells of the developing placenta. To determine the physiological significance of this cytokine in reproduction, the fertility of genetically GM-CSF-deficient (GM-/-) mice was examined. Implantation rates were normal in GM-/- mice, and viable pups were produced. H

Two cases of bladder tumor producing granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) are reported. The first case was in a 79-year-old female patient. A large bladder tumor was diagnosed as right-sided hydronephrosis. The tumor consisted mostly of squamous cell carcinoma with a few transitional cells. Total cystectomy could not be performed because of direct invasion by the tumor into the pelvis. The patient died without aggressive treatment about 7 months after admission. Her leukocyte count consistently increased up to 76,200/mm3. The serum G-CSF levels were not analyzed. However, immunohistoc

We report the rare case of a 61-year-old man with a diffuse malignant mesothelioma of mixed subtype which produced granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The white blood cell (WBC) was elevated to 85,100/mm3 without any evidence of infection, and the G-CSF level in the pleural effusion was also increased at 13,200 pg/ml. The lobes of the lung were encased in a tumor. Histopathologically, the tumor cells were of a polymorphous morphology with an epithelial and sarcomatoid mixed pattern. Immunohistochemistry showed that the tumor cells were positive for vimentin, cytokeratin, epithelial

BACKGROUND: In several diseases there is a relation between deficiency of neutrophil granulocytes and granulomatous lesions. Recently, in glycogen storage disease type Ib, this relation has been supported by the beneficial effect of treatment of enteritis with granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor.
AIM: To investigate whether chronic granulomatous disease could be treated according to the same principle.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Inflammatory lesions were monitored in two brothers with chronic granulomatous disease demonstrated by very low superoxide production in neutrophil granulocy…

Indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA) staining methods with Ehrlichia equi (MRK or BDS strains) and Western blot analyses containing a human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent (NCH-1 strain) were used to confirm probable human cases of infection in Connecticut during 1995 and 1996. Also included were other tests for Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), Babesia microti, and Borrelia burgdorferi. Thirty-three (8.8%) of 375 patients who had fever accompanied by marked leukopenia or thrombocytopenia were serologically confirmed as having HGE. Western blot analys

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a hematopoietic growth factor (HGF) with many applications in cancer therapy. The most important applications are reduction in the incidence of febrile neutropenia, acceleration of neutrophil recovery after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, and mobilization of progenitor cells. Many cutaneous adverse reactions associated with HGF have been reported in recent years, including injection site reactions, pyoderma gangrenosum, Sweet's syndrome, cutaneous leucocytoclastic vasculitis, and widespread folliculitis. The presence of large histio

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine that is able to increase not only the production of phagocytic cells but also their efficacy with respect to, e.g., bactericidal properties. In this study, we wanted to analyze the impact of GM-CSF on experimental Staphylococcus aureus-induced arthritis. For that purpose, mice were administered GM-CSF before and after bacterial inoculation. Although there was an increase in the total number of leukocytes as well as in the granulocyte fraction, there was no favorable effect on the severity of arthritis or on survival rates.
