Constitutional delay of growth and puberty is a constitutional delay of growth occurring in otherwise healthy adolescents with stature reduced for chronological age but generally appropriate for bone age and stage of pubertal development, both of which are usually delayed; psychological distress is the predominant consequence. The analysis of three cases shows that hand and wrist X-ray to study bone age is very important in patients with short stature, because we can make a better orthodontic treatment due to this bone age delay. The maturation stage investigation can be made in both hands bec

Bone crises in type 1 Gaucher disease are reported in long bones and occasionally in weight bearing bones and other bones, but rarely in small bones of the hands and feet. We retrospectively examined the incidence of bone pain in patients followed at the Rabin Medical Center, Israel, before and following the initiation of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and evaluated them for bone crises. Of 100 type I Gaucher disease patients, 30 (30%) experienced one or more bone crises. Small bone crises represented 31.5% of all bone crises and were always preceded by crises in other bones. While the incid

We examined 30 male chronic hemodialysis patients and 18 male controls without known bone or renal disease to determine the utility of maxillomandibular, non-dominant hand, shoulder and pelvis films in the evaluation of renal osteodystrophy. We used panoramic periapical radiographs to examine the maxilla and mandible and sensitive rapid processing films for the hand, shoulder and pelvis. Films were evaluated by experienced personnel without knowledge of the patients. There were significant differences between patients and controls in creatinine, urea nitrogen, total protein, albumin, alkaline

Some basic principles of orthopedic management of common conditions of the hand and wrist have been presented. These basic principles and an awareness of the potential complications should aid radiologists in evaluation of postoperative films. The interested reader is referred to Green's Operative Hand Surgery and Chapman's Operative Orthopaedics for more detailed information.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric polydactyly is a common congenital disorder of the hand and foot that affects the development and psychology of children. It can be classified into postaxial polydactyly, preaxial polydactyly and central polydactyly. Among the three types, central polydactyly is the rarest, resulting in limited literature pertaining to the management of this condition. We present a rare case of central polydactyly of the left foot with nine toes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-month-old female child was brought to us with left congenital central mirror foot and ill-fitting shoe concerns. The fo

Since osteoporosis is a major public health problem in Japan, it is important to clarify the effect of high-mineral drinking water consumption on osteogenesis. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the relationship between high-mineral drinking water consumption and osteogenesis in ovariectomized rats that received a low-calcium diet and purified water (PW group) or a low-calcium diet and high-mineral drinking water (CR group). High-mineral drinking water affected the rats' body weight. After 3 months, the bone density of the CR group was higher than that of the PW group (p<0.05). Furtherm

McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation syndrome characterized by hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). We report a case of a female child with MKS who was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit of Seoul National University Children's Hospital on her 15th day of life for further evaluation and management of an abdominal cystic mass. She underwent abdominal sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, genitography and cystoscopy which confirmed HMC with a transverse vaginal septum. X-rays of the hand and foot showed bony fusion of th

The comparative analysis of the osteometric dimensions of metacarpal bones in three groups of males (aged from 23 to 63 years) differing with respect to the presence of the professionally connected long-term exposure to the vibration is performed. The sample encompasses forest workers employed in wood industry (exposed to heavy physical work and to the daily use of hand-held vibrating tools) from two regions of Croatia: Podravina (n = 192) and Gorski Kotar (n = 115). The control group is formed using the random sample (selected according to age criterion) of phenotypically healthy male inhabit

Enchondroma is a benign growth of cartilage arising in the bone metaphysis as a solitary or multiple primary lesions. The form of multiple enchondromatosis with unilateral predominance is termed Ollier's disease. We have recently treated a case of Ollier's disease with the chief complaint of deformity of the left hand. The patient was an 11-year-old boy. Radiographic examination showed honeycombed clear spaces in the metaphyses of the middle and proximal phalanges of the left ring and little fingers as well as of the fourth and fifth metacarpals, and thinning of the cortex of these bones, but

This case report describes the first reported occurrence of extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture caused by a cat bite. Animal bites, particularly from cats, can cause various complications, including damage to tendons and bones. In our case, a 43-year-old female suffered an EPL rupture in her dominant hand after being bitten by her cat. The patient underwent EPL reconstruction by means of extensor indicis proprius (EIP) using standard techniques, with a positive functional outcome reported. The case highlights the importance of considering the risk of tendon injuries following animal

This study describes the age and sex distribution, trauma mechanism, treatment and influence of patient-reported outcomes of 6542 carpal fractures from the Swedish Fracture Registry (SFR). The most commonly fractured carpal bone was the scaphoid (60%), followed by the triquetrum (25%), hamate (5%) and trapezium (4%). The mean age at injury was 41 years, and 69% of patients were male. The age and sex distribution of carpal fractures differed substantially between the different carpal bones. Men were more likely to sustain a carpal fracture after high-energy trauma and were more likely to be tre

Brown tumor of the jaws is a manifestation of hyperparathyroidism consisting of osteolytic lesions that show proliferation of multinucleated giant cells in the maxilla and/or mandible. Differential diagnosis of these lesions from local central giant-cell granuloma is mandatory for the correct treatment of the patient. Radiographic and histopathological exams of the jaw lesion are not sufficient to determine the diagnosis, which requires laboratory tests including serum levels of calcium, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and phosphate, and radiographic examination of other bones

365 participants of the 64. Enduro-World Championship in 1989 reported 232 injuries within a 10-years-period of motorbike driving. The knee was most frequent (21.5 pc., mainly ligament ruptures) injured, followed by fracture of the clavicle (18.5 pc.), hand (15.5 pc.) and damages of the shoulder. Fractures are very common (55.5 pc.) in motorbike sports. Injuries often were produced by collisions with other motorbikes or trees. Driving mistakes, jumps, slipping wheels and overturn were other causes for an accident. During the championship 13 accidents were registered. In a clinical examination

Therapy of pain induced by malignant diseases is an important task for any physician. A proper diagnosis is necessary for an adequate treatment. Pain in the bones can be treated successfully with peripherally acting analgesics such as acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol or metamizole. On the other hand, certain tumors require local blockade as in cases with pancreatic or perianal tumors. If such a therapeutic approach is not possible or if pain is felt all over the body then centrally acting analgesics such as opiates are necessary. Opiates should be administered according to a tight schedule an

The primary care physician can accurately diagnose hand injuries by obtaining a thorough patient history and performing a complete physical examination of the hand. When the severity of injury is doubtful, immobilization in a splint with next-day referral is appropriate. Immediate consultation should be obtained with nerve or vascular damage, fracture-dislocation injuries, open fractures, substantial skin loss, or flexor tendon injuries at or distal to the wrist.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the long-term results of treatment with curettage followed by an autograft or allograft application in patients with enchondroma of the hand.
METHODS: Within a 15-year period, 76 patients (41 males, 35 females; mean age 32 years; range 14 to 47 years) were operated on for enchondroma of the hand. Following curettage of the lesion, reconstruction of the defect was made either by an autograft obtained from the iliac crest (n=76) or by a dehydrated cancellous allograft (n=15). The diagnosis was histologically confirmed in all the cases. Functional and radiographic result
