Pediatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related head injury rates and patterns: A 10-year nationwide analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) carries significant risk of permanent injury and death, disproportionately affecting children. These injuries commonly affect the head and are especially severe among children as they are often unhelmeted and more likely than adults to experience rollover injuries. Many studies examining patients with ATV-related injuries are single-center cohort studies, with few focusing specifically on head injuries. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the annual incidence of ATV-related head injuries between 2012 and 2021, classify and compare

Postoperative Infection Rates After Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Comparison With and Without the Use of a Surgical Helmet System.

Following total joint arthroplasty, surgical site infections (SSI) and periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are associated with increased patient morbidity and healthcare utilization. Current positive-pressure surgical sterile helmet system (SHS) were developed as a feasible, useful version of the body exhaust system. The use of SHS has not yet been proven to decrease infection rates in the orthopedic literature. The primary purpose of this study is to compare the infection rates between patients who underwent total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) with a surgical team wearing SHS versus without SHS.A

Impact of helmet laws on motorcycle crash mortality rates.

BACKGROUND: Helmets are effective in reducing traumatic brain injury. However, population effects of helmet laws have not been well described. This study assesses the impact of helmet laws on the motorcycle (MC) fatality rate in the United States from 1999 to 2015. METHODS: Fatality Analysis Reporting System MC fatalities (aged ≥16 years), crash characteristics, and MC-related laws were collected by year for all 50 states from 1999 to 2015 to create a pooled time series. Generalized linear autoregressive modeling was applied to assess the relative contribution of helmet laws to the MC fatalit

Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis.

Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is significantly more common than syndromic craniosynostosis, affecting the sagittal, coronal, metopic, and lambdoid sutures in decreasing order of frequency. Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is most frequently associated with only 1 fused suture, creating a predictable head shape. Repair of craniosynostosis is recommended to avoid potential neurodevelopmental delay. Early intervention at 3 to 4 months of age allows minimally invasive approaches, but requires postoperative molding helmet therapy and good family compliance. Open techniques are deferred until the child

Helmet use in bicycles and non-motorised wheeled recreational vehicles in children.

AIM: Injuries involving non-motorised wheeled recreational vehicles (NMWRV) and bicycles are a common cause for hospitalisation in children. Studies show that helmet use whilst bicycle riding can decrease mortality and morbidity due to head injury. However, there remains an important proportion of children who are non-helmet users (NHU). This study aims to investigate helmet use and attitudes and injury patterns in children presenting with trauma after riding bicycles and other NMWRVs. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was undertaken over 8 months of children aged 0-16 years, who presented

Changes in motorcycle-related injuries and deaths after mandatory motorcycle helmet law in a district of Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: Our study measured the change in head injuries and deaths among motorcycle users in Cu Chi district, a suburban district of Ho Chi Minh City. METHODS: Hospital records for road traffic injuries (RTIs) were collected from the Cu Chi Trauma Centre and motorcycle-related death records were obtained from mortality registries in commune health offices. Head injury severity was categorized using the Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS). Rate ratios (RRs) were used to compare rates pre- and post-law (2005/2006-2009/2010). Cu Chi's population, stratified by year, age, and sex, was used as the de

The implementation of a municipal indoor ice skating helmet policy: effects on helmet use, participation and attitudes.

RELEVANT LOCAL INJURY EPIDEMIOLOGY: In Ottawa, between 2005 and 2009 there was an annual average of 47.2 head injuries due to ice skating in children and youth (1-19 years of age) requiring a visit to the emergency department, with the highest rates among those aged 5-14 years. Between 2002 and 2007, only 6% of children were wearing a helmet during ice skating when the head injury occurred. During indoor public skating sessions, 93% of children (<10 years)-57% aged 10-12 years, 20% aged 13-17 years and 9% adults-wore helmets in the absence of a policy. Support for a helmet policy was high from

Injury mechanisms in fatal Australian quad bike incidents.

OBJECTIVES: The ability to determine risk management controls for quad bike use is confounded by limitations in crash and injury information. The aim of this article is to identify the injury mechanisms, crash characteristics, and contributing factors in fatal quad bike incidents in Australia by activity (recreation and work). METHODS: An in-depth case series study was undertaken of 106 Australian quad bike fatalities that had occurred between 2000 and 2013. All case material held by Australian coroners was obtained and reviewed. RESULTS: One hundred and six cases were categorized as occurri

Mild passive focal cooling prevents epileptic seizures after head injury in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic epilepsy is prevalent, often difficult to manage, and currently cannot be prevented. Although cooling is broadly neuroprotective, cooling-induced prevention of chronic spontaneous recurrent seizures has never been demonstrated. We examined the effect of mild passive focal cooling of the perilesional neocortex on the development of neocortical epileptic seizures after head injury in the rat. METHODS: Rostral parasagittal fluid percussion injury in rats reliably induces a perilesional, neocortical epileptic focus within weeks after injury. Epileptic seizures were asses

Motorcycle helmets associated with lower risk of cervical spine injury: debunking the myth.

BACKGROUND: There has been a repeal of the universal helmet law in several states despite definitive evidence that helmets reduce mortality, traumatic brain injury, and hospital expenditures. Opponents of the universal helmet law have successfully claimed that helmets should not be required because of greater torque on the neck, which is thought to increase the likelihood of a cervical spine injury. There is currently insufficient evidence to counter claims that helmets do not increase the risk of cervical spine injury after a motorcycle collision. The objective of this study was to determine

Autopsy study of motorcyclist fatalities: the effect of the 1992 Maryland motorcycle helmet use law.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the impact of Maryland's all-rider motorcycle helmet law (enacted on October 1, 1992) on preventing deaths and traumatic brain injuries among motorcyclists. METHODS: Statewide motorcyclist fatalities occurring during seasonally comparable 33-month periods immediately preceding and following enactment of the law were compared. RESULTS: The motorcyclist fatality rate dropped from 10.3 per 10 000 registered motorcycles prelaw to 4.5 postlaw despite almost identical numbers of registered motorcycles. Motorcyclists wearing helmets had a lower risk of tra

Association between the maxillofacial injury severity score to helmet types, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and length of stay.

BACKGROUND: Traffic accidents are a major etiological factor in maxillofacial injuries, exhibiting a high incidence rate. The Maxillofacial Injury Severity Score (MFISS) is utilized to assess the severity of maxillofacial trauma. Helmet use is a preventive measure against more serious injuries. Patients with maxillofacial trauma are at risk of complications and infections. Elevated neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in hospitalized patients correlates with a longer length of stay (LOS). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between helmet types and MFISS scores, as well
