Occupational Health Hazards and Management Practices Among Nurses in Public Healthcare Facilities in Four Sub-Sahara African Countries: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in sub-Sahara Africa are disproportionately exposed to occupational health hazards. These risks are intensified by persistent shortages of resources, inadequate training, weak reporting systems and fragile safety infrastructures, all of which undermine nurses' well-being and compromise the quality of healthcare delivery. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to map the existing evidence on practices for managing occupational health hazards among nurses in public healthcare facilities in four sub-Sahara African countries: Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia and Uganda. METHODS: A sc

Influenza Vaccination of Nurses and Other Health Care Workers in Different Occupational Settings: A Classic and AI Mixed Approach for Time-to-Event Data.

Background: Seasonal influenza currently remains a major public health concern for the community and, in particular, the health care worker (HCW). According to the World Health Organization, HCWs are among the high-risk categories for which vaccination is recommended, due to the derived absenteeism, productivity loss, and high probability of transmitting the disease to vulnerable individuals or patients. Therefore, an HCW vaccination policy should be adopted by every health care provider. There is growing evidence that a time effect of the vaccination event is probable, which may influence vac

Occupational exposure intensity trends in health care workers: Joinpoint Regression identifies COVID-19 associated inflection point (2017-2024).

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) globally face substantial risks from occupational blood and body fluids (BBFs) exposure, with disparities heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. China's health care system, characterized by low workforce density and chronic HCW fatigue (53.9%-82%), presents a critical context for analyzing exposure dynamics. Existing studies lack longitudinal data across pandemic phases and stratified analyses by years of service (YoS). METHODS: This longitudinal study (2017-2024) analyzed 860 occupational BBFs exposures from a Chinese tertiary hospital. Trends were assess

The Diagnostic Value of Routine Spirometry in Occupational Health Practice for Early Detection of Silicosis: A Retrospective Belgian Study Among Silica-Exposed Workers.

OBJECTIVE: Silicosis is a pneumoconiosis caused by respirable crystalline silica (RCS). As current surveillance methods have low sensitivity for early detection, we evaluated the value of prediagnostic occupational spirometry monitoring. METHODS: To investigate the possibility of detecting disease, we assessed 58 RCS-exposed cases by linking lung function abnormalities to CT readings. Univariate, stepwise logistic regression and ROC analysis were performed. RESULTS: Of 31 workers with RCS-related CT abnormalities, 25 were classified as silicosis. Fixed cutoff predicted values (FCO) for FEV 1

Occupational future time perspective and mental health problems across adolescence: Random-intercept cross-lagged panel analysis and alternative variations.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a crucial developmental stage characterized by escalating mental health issues as well as an increasing awareness of future career possibilities. Occupational future time perspective has been shown to be a promotive factor for social functioning and mental health, and a component in evidence-based clinical practices and randomized controlled trial intervention studies. However, it requires more rigorous and ecological corroboration from longitudinal analysis at the within-person level. METHODS: Random intercept cross-lagged panel models with several adjustments an

Prediabetes, Diabetes, and the Risk of All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality in a Japanese Working Population: Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

OBJECTIVE: Prediabetes has been suggested to increase risk for death; however, the definitions of prediabetes that can predict death remain elusive. We prospectively investigated the association of multiple definitions of prediabetes with the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer in Japanese workers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study included 62,785 workers who underwent a health checkup in 2010 or 2011 and were followed up for death from 2012 to March 2019. Prediabetes was defined according to fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)

A Qualitative Study of Perceived Risk of Occupational Exposure to HIV and Use of Post Exposure Prophylaxis Services Among Health-Care Workers in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to HIV continues to present a risk of HIV infections to health-care workers (HCWs) in low-income countries. Since 2005, policies in Tanzania have been in place to guide the implementation of HIV/AIDS post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) interventions in the workplace. However, little is known about how frontline HCWs experience and view these interventions. This study aimed to explore how HCWs perceive their HIV infection risk and capture their experiences of workplace HIV/AIDS interventions. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used. Medical and nonmedic

Integral strategy to supportive care in breast cancer survivors through occupational therapy and a m-health system: design of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Technological support using e-health mobile applications (m-health) is a promising strategy to improve the adherence to healthy lifestyles in breast cancer survivors (excess in energy intake or low physical activity are determinants of the risk of recurrence, second cancers and cancer mortality). Moreover, cancer rehabilitation programs supervised by health professionals are needed due to the inherent characteristics of these breast cancer patients. Our main objective is to compare the clinical efficacy of a m-health lifestyle intervention system alone versus an integral strategy t
