Age-specific centiles for fibroblast growth factor 23 and its associations with mineral and bone metabolism in healthy children.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23) regulates phosphate and vitamin D metabolism and is implicated in pediatric disorders such as X-linked hypophosphatemia and CKD-mineral and bone disorder. Accurate interpretation in children requires age-adjusted centile charts. OBJECTIVE: To construct age- and sex-specific centile charts for intact (iFGF23) and C-terminal (cFGF23) FGF23 in healthy UK children and examine associations with mineral and bone metabolism markers. METHODS: In a cross-sectional cohort of 430 children aged 0-16 years, plasma iFGF23 and cFGF23 were measured using DiaSo

Circadian rest/activity rhythms and change in MRI-derived brain volumes: Differences by age in a cognitively healthy sample.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian rest/activity rhythms (RARs) change across adulthood, and alterations in RARs have been associated with cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and dementia. Little is known, however, about associations of RARs with subsequent changes in brain structure. METHODS: We investigated cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between RARs from wrist actigraphy and AD-relevant brain volumes from magnetic resonance imaging in cognitively unimpaired adults aged ≥ 50 and whether age moderated these associations. RESULTS: In cross-sectional analyses, weaker and more fra

Age-related gait adaptations in stair ascent: Changes in dynamic stability, coordination, and muscle activity in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVE: Stair ascent, as a routine yet complex daily activity, imposes greater motor demands on older adults and is associated with an increased fall risk. Aging leads to gait adaptive changes; however, the gait adaptive changes during stair ascent across young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional design and ultimately enrolled 36 healthy young adults, 36 middle-aged adults, and 36 older adults, with the oldest participants under 75 years of age. A three-dimensional motion analysis system combined with a surface electro

Effects of Mental Fatigue on Shoulder and Knee Joint Repositioning in Healthy College-Aged Males: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Mental fatigue negatively affects both cognitive and physical performance, but its specific impact on proprioception remains underexplored. This study examined the effects of mental fatigue on shoulder and knee joint repositioning. Proprioception was assessed in 18 college-aged males using a joint repositioning task in a single-group, nonrandomised quasi-experimental design, with measurements taken before and after a Stroop task designed to induce mental fatigue. A significant increase in shoulder flexion variable error was observed (pre-Stroop = 2.79 ± 1.31°, post-Stroop = 4.97 ± 3.20°; rank

Protocol paper for healthy ageing for Indigenous communities in India and Sweden with focus on nutritious and culturally adequate food provision.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF STUDY: The elderly care regime for Indigenous peoples differs between India and Sweden. In India, the family cares for the elderly, while the responsibility in Sweden lies with the authorities. Food insecurity is the main problem in India, while lack of culturally adapted food is a problem in Sweden. In both cases, little knowledge exists on the importance of traditional food in Indigenous elderly care. By examining the use and significance of traditional food in elderly care for the Mal Paharia people in India and the Sami in Sweden, we focus on the following questio

Cerebrovascular reactivity metrics as predictors of cognitive performance in healthy ageing: insights from transcranial colour-coded ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: This study was designed to investigate the utility of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) metrics, derived from transcranial colour-coded Doppler ultrasound (TCCD). Three main CVR metrics were examined as potential markers for cerebrovascular risk associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a stage between normal cognition and dementia. METHODS: We investigated 122 eligible, stroke-free, healthy, community-based Chinese adults (mean age, 65.34 ± 6.86 years). Cognitive performance was assessed using the validated Hong Kong version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. On a scal

Genetic Risk for Alzheimer's Disease Alters Perceived Executive Dysfunction in Cognitively Healthy Middle-Aged and Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) may be an early indicator of future cognitive decline. However, findings comparing SCC and objective cognitive performance have varied, particularly in the memory domain. Even less well established is the relationship between subjective and objective complaints in non-amnestic domains, such as in executive functioning, despite evidence indicating very early changes in these domains. Moreover, particularly early changes in both amnestic and non-amnestic domains are apparent in those carrying the Apolipoprotein-E ɛ4 allele, a primary genetic risk

Capillary blood parameters are gestational age, birthweight, delivery mode and gender dependent in healthy preterm and term infants.

OBJECTIVES: The measurement of blood pH and gas analytes (BPGA), soon after birth, constitutes the first-line standard of care procedure in high-risk newborns. However, no data is available in capillary blood on perinatal bias such as gestational age (GA), weight at birth (BW), delivery mode, and gender. The aims of the present study were to investigate whether in a cohort of healthy preterm (PT) and term (T) infants BPGA were GA, BW, delivery mode and gender dependent, thus affecting BPGA reliability as diagnostic test. METHODS: We performed a prospective case-control study in 560 healthy in

Neuroimaging and Clinical Findings in Healthy Middle-Aged Adults With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in the PREVENT Dementia Study.

IMPORTANCE: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) represent an important, potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia. Despite frequently observed vascular imaging changes in individuals with TBI, the relationships between TBI-associated changes in brain imaging and clinical outcomes have largely been overlooked in community cases of TBI. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether TBI are associated with and interact with midlife changes in neuroimaging and clinical features in otherwise healthy individuals. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional analysis used baseline data from the PREVENT

Age-Related Hearing Loss, Cognitive Performance, and Metabolic Risk in Healthy Adults: A Seven-Year Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVES: Sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis) affects up to half of the adults, is associated with cognitive decline. Whether this association reflects the cause, the consequence, or parallel processes driven by other factors remains unclear. Both presbycusis and cognition are linked to elevated metabolic risk, which in turn raises with age. METHOD: In a multioccasion longitudinal design, we used latent change score models with strong factorial invariance to assess the change in pure-tone threshold auditory function, fluid intelligence, metabolic risk, variability therein, and the dyna

Different stages of emotional prosody processing in healthy ageing-evidence from behavioural responses, ERPs, tDCS, and tRNS.

Past research suggests that the ability to recognise the emotional intent of a speaker decreases as a function of age. Yet, few studies have looked at the underlying cause for this effect in a systematic way. This paper builds on the view that emotional prosody perception is a multi-stage process and explores which step of the recognition processing line is impaired in healthy ageing using time-sensitive event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Results suggest that early processes linked to salience detection as reflected in the P200 component and initial build-up of emotional representation as
