A Correlational Analysis between Audiometric Pure-tone Averages and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions.

Hearing loss severely affects human speech communication and the quality of life, and efficient hearing screening can help hearing function diagnosis and subsequent hearing rehabilitation. Pure-tone audiometry test and distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurement are two commonly-used clinical techniques for hearing loss diagnosis, and they were developed based on different mechanisms in a hearing process. Early work investigated the relation between audiometric thresholds and DPOAE measurements. The present work aimed to use a simple linear fitting to estimate audiometric pure-

Precision and prediction matter: investigating hearing recovery measurements and prognosis in sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

PURPOSE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as 30 decibels (dB) hearing loss in 3 consecutive frequencies occurring within 72 h. Pure-tone average of four frequencies (PTA4) is commonly used to evaluate hearing levels but may not accurately reflect the recovery. We aimed to identify prognostic factors for recovery and to evaluate how recovery should be assessed, by comparing PTA4 with an individual pure-tone average (iPTA), including solely the hearing thresholds for the affected frequencies. METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and audiologic factors were analyzed using multivar

[Audiovestibular manifestations in systemic vasculitis].

Systemic vasculitides constitute a heterogeneous group of diseases with frequent overlapping in their clinical findings and the size of the vessels involved. They may be primary or secondary to other diseases. Their common characteristic is the inflammation of blood vessels, giving rise to ischaemia. In the present article, we have reviewed the most common audiovestibular features that may be observed in patients with systemic vasculitides. Audiovestibular manifestations may be the first symptom of a systemic vasculitis. Audiological manifestations include sudden hearing loss and progressive s

Surgical, functional and audiological evaluation of new Baha(®) Attract system implantations.

Bone-anchored hearing aids are well-established solutions for treatment of hearing-impaired patients. However, classical systems with percutaneous abutments have disadvantages concerning aesthetics, hygiene and adverse soft tissue reactions. The study aimed to evaluate surgical, functional and audiological results of a new Baha(®) Attract system, in which the sound processor is attached by magnetic force. Twenty patients implanted with a Baha(®) Attract system were divided into two groups: A-bilateral mixed and conductive hearing loss, B-single-sided deafness, and evaluated during a 6-month fo

Post-traumatic Ossifying Labyrinthitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Labyrinthitis ossificans is a rare but serious complication that can occur following inner ear trauma, often resulting in irreversible sensorineural hearing loss. We present the case of a 22-year-old male who developed progressive sensorineural hearing loss after a motor vehicle accident. High-resolution CT and MRI revealed ossification within the membranous labyrinth, consistent with labyrinthitis ossificans. This case highlights the importance of early radiologic assessment in post-traumatic hearing loss, as timely diagnosis is essential for optimizing cochlear implantation outcomes and pres

Preclinical Models to Study the Molecular Pathophysiology of Meniere's Disease: A Pathway to Gene Therapy.

Background: Meniere's disease (MD) is a set of rare disorders that affects >4 million people worldwide. Individuals with MD suffer from episodes of vertigo associated with fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. Hearing loss can involve one or both ears. Over 10% of the reported cases are observed in families, suggesting its significant genetic contribution. The condition is polygenic with >20 genes, and several patterns of inheritance have been reported, including autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and digenic inheritance across multiple MD families. Auditory-frontal Channeling in α and β Bands is Altered by Age-related Hearing Loss and Relates to Speech Perception in Noise.

Difficulty understanding speech-in-noise (SIN) is a pervasive problem faced by older adults particularly those with hearing loss. Previous studies have identified structural and functional changes in the brain that contribute to older adults' speech perception difficulties. Yet, many of these studies use neuroimaging techniques that evaluate only gross activation in isolated brain regions. Neural oscillations may provide further insight into the processes underlying SIN perception as well as the interaction between auditory cortex and prefrontal linguistic brain regions that mediate complex be

Minimal, progressive, and fluctuating hearing losses in children. Characteristics, identification, and management.

Referring to specific types of hearing loss as "minimal" or "mild" seems to imply that their effects are equally mild or negligible. A growing body of literature, however, supports the notion that such losses can have a significant impact on the communicative and educational development of young children. Although OME is considered a common childhood ailment, mounting evidence suggests that it is not always benign and may contribute to significant educational and communicative difficulties in some young children when accompanied by conductive hearing loss. Even very mild bilateral and unilater

Mineralocorticoid receptor mediates glucocorticoid treatment effects in the autoimmune mouse ear.

The standard treatment for many hearing disorders is glucocorticoid therapy, although the cochlear mechanisms involved in steroid-responsive hearing loss are poorly understood. Cochlear dysfunction in autoimmune mice has recently been shown to be controlled with the mineralocorticoid aldosterone as effectively as with the glucocorticoid prednisolone. Because aldosterone regulates sodium, potassium, and other electrolyte homeostasis, this implied the restoration of hearing with the mineralocorticoid was due to its impact on cochlear ion transport, particularly in the stria vascularis. This also

Low penetrance of hearing loss in two Chinese families carrying the mitochondrial tRNASer(UCN) mutations.

Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), especially in mitochondrial 12S rRNA and transfer RNA(tRNA)Ser(UCN) genes, are important causes of non‑syndromic hearing loss. However, the molecular mechanism underlying mt‑tRNA mutations in clinical hearing impairment are not fully understood. The present study assessed the molecular characterization of two Chinese families with non‑syndromic hearing loss, who both exhibited very low penetrance of deafness (9.1 and 12.5% for Family 1 and 2, respectively). Mutational analysis of the complete mtDNA genes identified the presence of cytochrome c oxidase 1/

Behavioral Animal Model of the Emotional Response to Tinnitus and Hearing Loss.

Increased prevalence of emotional distress is associated with tinnitus and hearing loss. The underlying mechanisms of the negative emotional response to tinnitus and hearing loss remain poorly understood, and it is challenging to disentangle the emotional consequences of hearing loss from those specific to tinnitus in listeners experiencing both. We addressed these questions in laboratory rats using three common rodent anxiety screening assays: elevated plus maze, open field test, and social interaction test. Open arm activity in the elevated plus maze decreased substantially after one trial i

A novel splice site variant c.1183 + 1 G > C in DFNA5 causing autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss in a Chinese family.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent clinical presentation of autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss (ADNSHL) is bilateral, symmetrical, postlingual progressive sensorineural hearing loss, which begins with impairment at high frequencies and eventually progresses to hearing loss at all frequencies. Autosomal dominant deafness-5 (DFNA5) is a subtype of ADNSHL caused by heterozygous variants in the gasdermin E (GSDME, also known as DFNA5) gene. METHODS: Deafness gene NGS panel analysis were performed on the proband of a six-generation Chinese family with hearing loss. The co-segregation analysis

Age-related hearing loss patterns in Fischer 344/NHsd rats with cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

The current study was undertaken to explore the impact of cisplatin ototoxicity at a young adult age on the development of age-related hearing loss, both in terms of age of onset and severity of the hearing loss. For the study, 21 Fischer 344/NHsd rats were tested. All rats were tested for auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) at age 7 months and then 15 of the rats were exposed to 7 mg/kg cisplatin by intra-peritoneal infusion. The other 6 rats received saline infusions to serve as controls. Seven of the cisplatin rats were euthanized after an ABR test 7 days after cisplatin exposure to assess

Relationship between hearing function and myasthenia gravis: A contemporary review.

There is increasing evidence of a connection between hearing function and myasthenia gravis (MG). Studies of the pathophysiological basis of this relationship suggest that acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) on outer hair cells (OHCs) play a central role. In patients with MG, autoantibodies against AChRs induce a progressive loss of AChRs on OHCs, decreasing their electromotility. The stapedial reflex decay test can be altered in MG patients, and can be used as an additional tool for diagnosis and monitoring. Transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emissions are the main diagnostic too

Altered Outer Hair Cell Mitochondrial and Subsurface Cisternae Connectomics Are Candidate Mechanisms for Hearing Loss in Mice.

Organelle crosstalk is vital for cellular functions. The propinquity of mitochondria, ER, and plasma membrane promote regulation of multiple functions, which include intracellular Ca2+ flux, and cellular biogenesis. Although the purposes of apposing mitochondria and ER have been described, an understanding of altered organelle connectomics related to disease states is emerging. Since inner ear outer hair cell (OHC) degeneration is a common trait of age-related hearing loss, the objective of this study was to investigate whether the structural and functional coupling of mitochondria with subsur
