INTRODUCTION: : Human infections with helminth worm parasites are extraordinarily prevalent across tropical and subtropical parts of the world, and control relies primarily on drugs that offer short-term suppression of infection. There is an urgent need for new vaccines that would confer long-lived immunity, protecting children in particular and minimizing community transmission.
AREAS COVERED: : This article discusses the development of helminth vaccines, from the first successful veterinary vaccines that demonstrated the feasibility of inducing protective immunity to helminths, to more rece

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is the most neglected of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The aim of this commentary is to describe the … f choice for treatment of strongyloidiasis) is not in use for control of the other soil-transmitted helminthiasis, nor is there ivermectin mass drug administration for control of strongyloidiasis. This might have created gap in control and elimination of the disease in Ethiopia and possibly elsewhere.
CONCLUSION: Strongyloidiasis appears to be the most neglect …

Anthelmintic resistance is a threat to global food security. In order to alleviate the selection pressure for resistance and maintain drug efficacy, management strategies increasingly aim to preserve a proportion of the parasite population in 'refugia', unexposed to treatment. While persuasive in its logic, and widely advocated as best practice, evidence for the ability of refugia-based approaches to slow the development of drug resistance in parasitic helminths is currently limited. Moreover, the conditions needed for refugia to work, or how transferable those are between parasite-host system

Children are the vulnerable group for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Being infected with STHs for long term would affect the children' s nutritious status, health development and cognitive ability. This paper reviews the prevalence and influencing factors of the infections of STHs (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichuria and hookworm) for children at home and abroad, as well as the impact of STH infections on children's health, cognitive ability and school performance, and the related interventions and their effects.

The following account is based on a review lecture given recently at the British Society of Parasitology. We point out that nematode parasites cause very widespread infections of humans, particularly in economically underdeveloped areas where sanitation and hygiene are not adequate. In the absence of adequate clean water and effective vaccines, control and prophylaxis relies on anthelmintic drugs. Widespread use of anthelmintics to control nematode parasites of animals has given rise to the development of resistance and so there is a concern that similar problems will occur in humans if mass d

Parasitic infestations demonstrated a decline in the past decade as a result of better hygiene practices and improved socioeconomic conditions. Nevertheless, global immigration, increased numbers of the immunocompromised people, international traveling, global warming, and rapid urbanization of the cities have increased the susceptibility of the world population to parasitic diseases. A number of new human parasites, such as Plasmodium knowlesi, in addition to many potential parasites, have urged the interest of scientific community. A broad spectrum of protozoal parasites frequently affects t

A study was carried out between 1993-1994 to determine the prevalence and intensity of intestinal helminth infections among 217 primary school children in Relliveedhi, a slum area in Visakhapatnam. The children were between 7 to 13 years of age and belonged to lower socio-economic status. Stool samples collected were processed by modified formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique to determine ova counts (EPG). One hundred and seventy seven children were infected with one or more of the intestinal parasites viz. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm. The overall prevalence

Virtually all the important helminth infections in humans can be treated with one of 5 anthelmintics currently in use: albendazole, mebendazole, diethylcarbamazine, ivermectin and praziquantel. These drugs are vital not only for the treatment of individual infections, but also useful in controlling transmission of the more common infections. This article reviews briefly the pharmacology of these 5 drugs, and then discusses current issues in the use of anthelmintics in the treatment and/or control of soil-transmitted nematode infections, filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis (and other tr
