A decrease of cardiac output during artificial ventilation with PEEP has been reported in 30-100% of patients. The drop in cardiac output is … cardiac output during PEEP may be seen (I) in patients with severe left ventricular failure, where hemodynamics may ameliorate with PEEP (II) in patients with very stiff lungs and low FRC before ventilation. A drop in mean arterial blood pressure was observed in a certain number of patients, while arterial pressure remained constant in others. PEEP should not …

Regression of experimental atherosclerosis is characterized by decreased intimal thickness and luminal enlargement, but intimal fibrosis becomes more dense. We tested the hypothesis that fibrosis of arteries during regression might limit vasodilator capacity and restrict hemodynamic improvement despite luminal improvement. We studied limb, coronary, and cerebral hemodynamics in 11 normal cynomolgus monkeys, 10 monkeys given an atherogenic diet for 20 mo and 8 monkeys given a regression diet for an additional 18 mo. The atherogenic diet induced lesions of moderate severity (50-60% stenosis); ow…

Hypertension is not simply an acute elevation of arterial pressure during a laboratory experiment. It is the development of a cardiovascular disorder provoking a variety of physiological adaptions brought about by an imbalance of pressor and depressor mechanisms that serve to control arterial pressure at normal levels in the normotensive animal. These pathogenetic mechanisms include hemodynamic, volume, renal parenchymal, sodium, renopressor, catecholamine, neural, hormonal, and even depressor factors. The most common form of the disease is essential hypertension, affecting over 95% of patient

Hemodynamic and humoral effects of lofexidine were assessed in 11 patients with essential hypertension after a total of 1.5 mg were given orally over 24 hr. Heart rate (bpm) slowed (-12 +/- 6 [SEM], p less than 0.05) and cardiac output (liters per minute) was reduced (-0.78 +/-0.18, p less than 0.01) irrespective of blood pressure response; the latter was related to changes in systemic resistance (TPR) (r = 0.72, p less than 0.01). Cardiac performance judged from ejection fraction (0.61 +/- 0.03 to 0.59 +/- 0.03, NS) and mean transit time (8.73 +/- 0.53 sec to 9.20 +/- 0.35, NS) were not alter

The effectiveness and lack of undesirable side-effects has made Verapamil the drug of choice in the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in infants without underlying heart disease. The case described demonstrates the occasional severe negative inotropic effect of the drug, independent of its influence on heart rate and conduction. Severe heart failure and shock ensued after a therapeutic dose of i.v. Verapamil in a newborn suffering from atrial flutter with no associated heart disease. Although the arrhythmia was promptly converted to sinus rhythm, the baby required two hours

Local hemodynamics were studied in 16 patients undergoing total extirpation of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Directional Doppler technique was used for the registration of blood velocities in vessels feeding and draining the AVM. Calculated flow in single feeding arteries ranged from 3 to 550 ml/min (average, 180 ml/min). An estimation of total AVM flow was possible in nine patients, and ranged from 150 to more than 900 ml/min (average, 490 ml/min). Pressure recordings were made from feeding arteries at their entrance to the AVM. This pressure was well below the systemic arterial …

Two groups of anesthetized, splenectomized, and paralyzed dogs were hyperventilated (Vt 40 ml/kg). Normocapnia was maintained in one group (mean Paco2 37.6 mm"h'g, mean p"h '7.41) and respiratory alkalosis (mean Paco2 8 mmHg, mean pH 7.75) in the other. Splanchnic hemodynamic responses were similar in both groups. Average hepatic venous pressure increased from 3.2 to 6.4 mmHg in the normocapnic group and from 3.8 to 7.7 mmHg in the hypocapnic group. Average portal venous pressure increased from 10.7 to 12.0 mmHg and 10.8 to 12.7 mmHg in the normocapnic and hypocapnic groups, respectively. Mese
