224 cases of septic complications after penetrating thoracic injuries were analyzed. Pleura empyem was observed in 105 of 7572 patients (overall number of the injured), lung abscess - in 22 cases, pericarditis was diagnosed in 108 patients, costal and sternal osteomyelitis - in 26 and mediastinitis - in 21 patients. Overall frequency of septic complication was 2,96%. The technique of air sterilization by thermal effect was revisited in this work. The impact of incorporating a high efficiency heat recovery exchanger to a sterilizing cell was especially assessed. A mathematical model was developed to study the dynamics and the steady state of the sterilizer. Haemothorax is a problem commonly encountered in medical practice and is most frequently related to open or closed chest trauma or to invasive procedures of the chest. Spontaneous haemothorax is less common and can have various causes, such as the use of anticoagulants, neoplasia, and rupture of pleural adhesions. We report a case of spontaneous haemothorax in a 19 year old boy with an exostosis of the left second rib. It may have been caused by nontraumatic rupture of markedly dilated pleural vessels, as a result of long-standing friction between the exostosis and the pleura. This is the first report of spontaneous haemothorax, without penetrative injury to the pleura or the diaphragm, in a patient with hereditary multiple exostosis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma may present in various ways, but only a few instances present with symptoms of distant metastases. This report describes a case of hepatocellular carcinoma presenting with acute haemothorax and haemorrhagic shock secondary to spontaneous rupture of chest wall metastasis. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a frequent malignancy in Asia and should be considered in the list of differential diagnosis of spontaneous haemothorax.
