OBJECTIVE: To describe the presentation and surgical treatment of anorectal pathology in HIV seropositive patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: Department of surgery, University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the records of 32 HIV seropositive patients surgically treated for anorectal pathology in 1985-1992.

Vitamin B12 and folate status were determined in 35 male HIV seropositive patients. Of these, 16 were asymptomatic (CDC II/III) and 19 were symptomatic (CDC IV) according to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) Classification. In a prospective study, we analysed the anorectal lesions observed in 148 human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients and compared the data with those reported in the literature. The majority of the patients (97.3%) were homosexual or bisexual men. The mean age of the population was 34.2 years.
