BACKGROUND:: The scope of podiatric practice has changed significantly in the past couple of decades. Despite the increased quality of training, many people outside of podiatry may not realize what our scope of practice entails.
METHODS:: We conducted a survey consisting of 10 items and asked internal medicine residents at Rush University Medical Center and patients whether they would feel comfortable consulting podiatrists, or being treated for each issue.
RESULTS:: The results for residents are as follows: 1) toenail fungus, 35% yes and 65% no; 2) diabetic wound care, 87.5% yes and 12.5% n

This article illustrates how the staff in a neurosurgical intensive care unit cared for a 22-year-old woman who sustained severe head and spine trauma after a motor vehicle crash. She was pregnant, and the fetus died. The staff were determined to bring love and compassion to the tragic event, honoring the death of the fetus, making arrangements for baptism and for the family to spend time with the fetus and mother after the birth. Witnessing this demonstration of love reminds us how blessed we are to be nurses and how human life is sacred at every stage.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the shared decision-making (SDM) needs, barriers, and facilitators of patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer in the hospital. Understanding this may improve SDM and cancer care quality in this vulnerable population.
METHODS: A single-site, mixed-methods study of hospitalized patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer, caregivers, and oncologists was conducted. After discharge, patient ± caregiver semi-structured interviews exploring SDM needs, barriers, and facilitators regarding their most important upcoming cancer-related decision were conducted. Onc

BACKGROUND: While primary care medical clinics have been the most common setting for the delivery of advice about smoking cessation, the hospital emergency department (ED) is a valuable context for counseling medically underserved tobacco users. We conducted a secondary analysis based on a larger audio-recorded study of patient-provider communication about pain and analgesics in the ED. Within a sample of ED patients with back pain, the purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine how physicians and nurse practitioners capitalize on "teachable moments" for health education to offer spont

A descriptive analysis and comparison of critically ill transported patients with non-transported patients will assist in selecting the appropriate referral and transportation process and subsequent incorporation into the critical care services of receiving hospitals. A retrospective review of transported and non-transported patients admitted to the same Intensive Care Unit was conducted. Patient demographics, disease categories, source of admission to ICU, APACHE II scores, predicted and actual hospital mortality, hospital and ICU length of stay were examined. Of all ICU admissions, 16% were

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy have been performed increasingly since its introduction in 1985, and is today one of the most commonly performed operative procedures in intensive care units. The aim of this study was to document patient-reported outcomes from percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy after hospital discharge.
METHODS: This study is based on retrospective extraction of data from the databases in the ICU at Haukeland University Hospital from 2004 to 2016. Patients alive by April 2018 and with a code for dilatation tracheostomy were sent a questionnaire about the

OBJECTIVE: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) carry a mortality rate as high as 80% . Early detection through a screening ultrasound can lead to a large mortality reduction. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has preliminary data suggesting it is as accurate as hospital-based ultrasounds performed by a sonographer. This validation study investigated the relative concordance of family physicians using POCUS to determine aortic diameter compared with hospital-based ultrasound studies.
METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional, multi-observation study conducted at 3 office practices. Five fa

OBJECTIVES: Hospitals are an important nontraditional setting in which to address adolescent reproductive health. However, opportunities for intervention are frequently missed, especially for boys and patients hospitalized for noningestion complaints. Our global aim was to increase delivery of reproductive health care to adolescents hospitalized through our children's hospital Pediatric Hospital Medicine service.
METHODS: We performed 2 quality improvement intervention cycles: (1) provider education and monthly reminder e-mails and (2) an automated electronic health record (EHR) adolescent hi

INTRODUCTION: With increasing immigration, the likelihood that nurses will provide care to individuals from diverse cultures has increased. To deliver ethically appropriate care, nurses must consider diverse cultural characteristics. Therefore, it is important to assess nurses' attitudes toward individuals from diverse cultures in relation to the quality of care provided.
AIM: The study aimed to investigate the relationships among nurses' intercultural communication apprehension, levels of xenophobia and caring behaviours.
METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations are common among individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and represent crucial opportunities to engage patients in treatment. Quality efforts to increase SUD treatment access in hospital settings must be paired with interventions that support linkage to follow-up SUD and medical care. However, the best way to support patients with SUD during transitions of care after hospitalization is unknown.
METHODS: The IntACT pilot study is a single-site randomized controlled trial that aims to assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a primary care-base

Emergency departments (EDs) in the US treat large numbers of people with opioid use disorder (OUD), but most health systems do not equip EDs to provide OUD care. CA Bridge has supported the implementation of low-threshold, ED-initiated medications for OUD bundled with harm reduction and patient navigation in more than 80 percent of California EDs. Using grant reporting and California controlled substances prescribing data, we assessed CA Bridge implementation from July 2022 through December 2023, as well as 2022 California statewide ED buprenorphine prescribing. There were 165,671 patient navi

BACKGROUND: Zhejiang Province introduced diagnosis-related group (DRG) payment reform in 2020, covering all hospitalizations to reduce costs and improve services. However, its emphasis on financial indicators and overlooks the evaluation of medical rationality, especially for pregnant women. To bridge this gap, this study developed an obstetric multidisciplinary team (MDT) model in which pharmacists are integrated into prenatal decision-making. This represents a transformation from reactive cost control to proactive medication optimization.
METHODS: This study collected DRG data of obstetric

Introduction: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major global health challenge and the leading cause of hospitalization in the U.S., with disproportionately high 30-day readmission rates among low-income and minority communities. Social drivers of health and substance use both influence CHF outcomes, yet the effect of substance use on short-term readmissions remains understudied. This study evaluated the association between substance use and all-cause 30-day readmissions at a Safety-Net Community Hospital. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted among 500 adults admitted with CHF

BACKGROUND: Multiple trigger tools have been developed to identify medication-related hospital (re)admissions (MRRs); however, the accuracy of these tools in real-world clinical practice is uncertain. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of four different trigger tools (OPERAM, STOPP/START criteria, ADR-tool, and QUADRAT) to identify MRRs compared with clinical adjudication.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of patients readmitted within 30 days to seven departments of a teaching hospital. In the primary study, which involved a retrospective chart review of 1111 re

BACKGROUND: Excessive interhospital variation threatens healthcare quality. Data on variation in patient outcomes across the whole cardiovascular spectrum are lacking. We aimed to examine interhospital variability for 28 cardiovascular All Patient Refined-Diagnosis-related Groups (APR-DRGs).
METHODS: We studied 103,299 cardiovascular admissions in 99 (98%) Belgian acute-care hospitals between 2012 and 2018. Using generalized linear mixed models, we estimated hospital-specific and APR-DRG-specific risk-standardized rates for in-hospital mortality, 30-day readmissions, and length-of-stay above

BACKGROUND: People who use heroin and other illicit opioids are at high risk of fatal overdose in the days after hospital discharge, but the reasons for this risk have not been studied.
METHODS: We used the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths, a database of coroner reports for deaths following psychoactive drug use in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We selected reports where the death occurred between 2010 and 2021, an opioid was detected in toxicology testing, the death was related to nonmedical opioid use, and death was either during an acute medical or psychiatric hospital a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Compare proportion of all-cause and cause-specific mortality among West Virginia Medicaid enrollees who were discharged from infective endocarditis (IE) hospitalization with and without opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnosis.
METHODS: The proportions of cause-specific deaths among those who were discharged from IE-related hospitalizations were compared by OUD diagnosis.
RESULTS: The top three underlying causes of death discharged from IE hospitalization were accidental drug poisoning, mental and behavioral disorders due to polysubstance use, and cardiovascular disease

Annually, thousands of individuals die and tens of thousands are hospitalized in association with suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in Canada. We analyzed the reports from the Canada Vigilance Adverse Reaction online database and present a synopsis of the state of ADRs in Canada between 2009 and 2018. Our synopsis includes both cross-sectional and longitudinal insights into ADR demographics, outcomes, associated drugs and disease indications. In closing, we highlight five overarching issues uncovered in our analysis, which have potential implications for future policy formulation. Furthe

INTRODUCTION: Despite increasing rates of opioid misuse and hospitalizations, rates of treatment for those with opioid use disorder (OUD) are very low. This study examined the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's (ACA) insurance expansion on improving rates of insurance, health care access, and treatment for those with OUD.
METHODS: Data on individuals ages 18-64 with OUD come from the 2008-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N=4100). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the trends of health care insurance, treatment and barriers

BACKGROUND: Deep prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication of joint replacement surgery. It is difficult to treat, and patients often require multiple major revision surgeries to eradicate the infection. Treatment can have negative and long-term impact on patients' quality of life. Understanding current service provision provides valuable information needed to design and evaluate support interventions for patients.
AIM: This survey aimed to identify usual care pathways and support in UK National Health Service (NHS) orthopaedic centres for patients receiving revision surg
