Does target animacy influence manual laterality of monkeys? First answer from northern pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonina).

The evolutionary origin of human right-handedness remains unclear. Many factors such as emotion and tool use have been implicated in primate handedness evolution. With regard to emotional lateralization, most related research focuses on facial asymmetry and behavioral laterality under the non-social context, whereas few studies investigate social laterality. This study, for the first time, investigates the effect of target animacy on hand preference in Old World monkeys, compares our findings with previous related studies in great apes and humans, and aids in filling the knowledge gap on prima

Animal models of enterovirus 71 infection: applications and limitations.

Human enterovirus 71 (EV71) has emerged as a neuroinvasive virus that is responsible for several outbreaks in the Asia-Pacific region over the past 15 years. Appropriate animal models are needed to understand EV71 neuropathogenesis better and to facilitate the development of effective vaccines and drugs. Non-human primate models have been used to characterize and evaluate the neurovirulence of EV71 after the early outbreaks in late 1990s. However, these models were not suitable for assessing the neurovirulence level of the virus and were associated with ethical and economic difficulties in ter

Occurrence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in Rhipidomys spp. from a forest fragment of the Brazilian Cerrado.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of world importance, and its transmission depends on the interaction between humans and animals. Given the necessity to investigate potential hosts of Leptospira spp., this study verified the prevalence of different serovars in the species of Rhipidomys spp., a widespread sigmodont rodent in Brazil. The studied population originates from a semi-evergreen forest located in the county of Uberlândia, in the state of Minas Gerais. The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was performed with 14 serovars. Thirteen out of the 43 wild rodents captured showed a positi

Murine adenoviruses:

In vivo reactivation of herpes simplex virus in rabbit trigeminal ganglia: electrode model.

The rabbit provides an excellent model for the study of ocular herpes because herpetic keratitis in the rabbit eye resembles human disease in its clinical features and in its propensity for spontaneous recurrence. This paper presents a method for the electrical induction of multiple episodes of in vivo reactivation of latent HSV-1 infection with peripheral shedding of virus. Physiological levels of current delivered via an electrode implanted over the trigeminal ganglion of latently infected animals has enabled us to modify and synchronize virus shedding in preocular tear film and to cause mul

Circulation and Spillover of pdmH1N1 Influenza A Virus at an Educational Swine Farm in Chile, 2019-2023.

Educational farms provide students with hands-on experience in agricultural and animal practices. However, the close contact between humans and farm animals creates a significant interface for zoonotic disease transmission, yet research on infectious diseases in such settings remains limited. This study investigates the ongoing spillovers of human-origin influenza A virus (IAV) into swine at an educational farm in central Chile, describing IAV prevalence, outbreak dynamics, and the genomic characterization of detected strains. The Menesianos educational farm, located in Melipilla, central Chil

Orf, a Human Parapoxvirus Infection.

Despite being common worldwide, parapoxvirus infections are regarded as neglected zoonoses because their incidence is either unknown or grossly overestimated. In ruminants all throughout the world, parapoxvirus produces oral lesions and infectious pustular dermatitis. The pathogen is typically spread directly via items contaminated with parapoxvirus and indirectly via a near contact with dermatological lesions that contain the virus on affected animals. Animals infected with the parapoxvirus typically exhibit no clinical symptoms, and the mode of parapoxvirus transmission is occasionally uncle

One Health Genomic Surveillance at Human-Animal Interfaces in Rural Ghana Reveals Underreported Viruses of Zoonotic and Economic Concern.

Under a One Health framework, viruses of veterinary and zoonotic importance pose significant threats to animal and human health, food security, and livelihoods, particularly in regions with intense human-animal interactions. In West Africa, despite recent advances in surveillance programs, important gaps remain in understanding viral diversity and cross-species transmission at wildlife-livestock interfaces. We conducted metagenomic surveillance to characterize viruses circulating across livestock, domestic animals, and wildlife in rural Ghana in 165 animals sampled across five regions. Viral R…

Cowpox virus outbreak in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) and jaguarundis (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) with a time-delayed infection to humans.

BACKGROUND: Often described as an extremely rare zoonosis, cowpox virus (CPXV) infections are on the increase in Germany. CPXV is rodent-borne with a broad host range and contains the largest and most complete genome of all poxviruses, including parts with high homology to variola virus (smallpox). So far, most CPXV cases have occurred individually in unvaccinated animals and humans and were caused by genetically distinguishable virus strains. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Generalized CPXV infections in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) and jaguarundis (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) at a Zoologic

[Pathogenic mechanisms of Tick-borne Flaviviruses].

Many tick-borne flaviviruses causes fatal encephalitis in humans and animals with severe sequelae. However, it remains unclear how viral replication and pathogenicity contribute to the neurologic manifestations. In this paper, I summarized the specific replication mechanism of tick-borne flaviviruses in neurons and their effect on the pathogenicity of neurological disease. Our findings of the unique virus-host interaction in central nerve system will improve further understanding of the molecular mechanisms of viral replication and the pathogenicity of neurotropic viruses.

Mysterious chronic urticaria caused by Blastocystis spp.?

Species of the genus Blastocystis, which are single-cell, intestinal protozoan parasites of humans and animals, remain mysterious, with unclear clinical and epidemiologic significance. In recent years, many researchers have suggested a possible connection between Blastocystis spp. infection and chronic urticaria. In the present article, we review the literature and discuss the possible associations between the clinical symptomatology and pathogenicity of this organism in terms of its subtypes, morphologic forms, genetic diversity, and interactions with other intestinal microbiota.

Cartilage regeneration and repair testing in a surrogate large animal model.

The aging human population is experiencing increasing numbers of symptoms related to its degenerative articular cartilage (AC), which has stimulated the investigation of methods to regenerate or repair AC. However, the seemingly inherent limited capacity for AC to regenerate persists to confound the various repair treatment strategies proposed or studied. Animal models for testing AC implant devices and reparative materials are an important and required part of the Food and Drug Administration approval process. Although final testing is ultimately performed in humans, animal testing allows for

Host-Specific NS5 Ubiquitination Determines Yellow Fever Virus Tropism.

The recent yellow fever virus (YFV) epidemic in Brazil in 2017 and Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in 2015 serve to remind us of the importance of flaviviruses as emerging human pathogens. With the current global flavivirus threat, there is an urgent need for antivirals and vaccines to curb the spread of these viruses. However, the lack of suitable animal models limits the research questions that can be answered. A common trait of all flaviviruses studied thus far is their ability to antagonize interferon (IFN) signaling so as to enhance viral replication and dissemination. Previously, we reported

Viruses other than arenaviruses from West African wild mammals. Factors affecting transmission to man and domestic animals.

At least thirty-seven different viruses have been isolated from wild mammals in West Africa since 1962. Some of these, including Lassa virus, are already known to cause serious human morbidity and mortality. Crimean haemorrhagic fever-Congo virus, Dugbe virus, Mokola virus, and a smallpox-like agent from a gerbil in Dahomey are briefly discussed. An account of social and ecologic factors affecting man, domestic animals, and their interaction with wild mammals is given.

Microbial molecule ingress promotes neuroinflammation and brain CCR5 expression in persons with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation accompanies HIV-1 infection, resulting in microbial translocation from different tissues. We investigated interactions between lentivirus infections, neuroinflammation and microbial molecule presence in the brain. METHODS: Brain tissues from adult humans with (n = 22) and without HIV-1 (n = 11) infection as well as adult nonhuman primates (NHPs) with (n = 11) and without (n = 4) SIVmac251 infection were investigated by RT-PCR/ddPCR, immunofluorescence and western blotting. Studies of viral infectivity, host immune gene expression and viability were performed

Risk assessment of SARS-CoV-2 in Antarctic wildlife.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This pathogen has spread rapidly across the world, causing high numbers of deaths and significant social and economic impacts. SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus with a suggested zoonotic origin with the potential for cross-species transmission among animals. Antarctica can be considered the only continent free of SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, concerns have been expressed regarding the potential human introduction of this virus to the continent through the activities of resea

Interactions of the maternal microbiome with diet, stress, and infection influence fetal development.

Humans and other animals contain multitudes of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which make up a diverse microbiome. Across body sites including skin, gastrointestinal tract, and oral cavity there are distinct microbial niches that are made up of trillions of microorganisms that have co-evolved to inhabit and interact with the host. The microbiome also interacts with the changing environment. This tripartite interaction between the host, microbiome, and environment suggests microbial communities play a key role in the biological processes of the host, such as development a

Mitochondria and Peroxisome Remodeling across Cytomegalovirus Infection Time Viewed through the Lens of Inter-ViSTA.

Nearly all biological processes rely on the finely tuned coordination of protein interactions across cellular space and time. Accordingly, generating protein interactomes has become routine in biological studies, yet interpreting these datasets remains computationally challenging. Here, we introduce Inter-ViSTA (Interaction Visualization in Space and Time Analysis), a web-based platform that quickly builds animated protein interaction networks and automatically synthesizes information on protein abundances, functions, complexes, and subcellular localizations. Using Inter-ViSTA with proteomics

Advancing neurofibromatosis research: a comparative review of animal models and their utility in dissecting the tumor microenvironment.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder characterized by nervous system tumors arising primarily from NF1 or NF2 mutations. Given the complexity of the genetic background and heterogeneity of associated tumor phenotypes in neurofibromatosis, mechanistic investigations rely heavily on experimental animal models. Human tissue-based studies alone cannot fully elucidate causal relationships, temporal dynamics, modifier gene effects, or cell type-specific contributions to tumor development, progression, and microenvironmental regulation. Consequently, various animal models have been developed, incl
