OBJECTIVES: The mechanism of pain sensation in patients with ulcer-like functional dyspepsia is unclear and there are no guidelines for its treatment. Whilst much research and many pharmacological treatments have provided symptomatic relief of ulcer-like functional dyspepsia through control of acid secretion, the role of acid in ulcer-like functional dyspepsia is unknown. A 6-year-old Caucasian girl experienced a generalized erythematous skin rash during carbamazepine therapy. Over the next four days the eruption worsened into erythroderma with fever and generalized lymphadenopathy. Routine laboratory studies revealed increased serum levels of liver enzymes and eosinophilia. Immunologic reactivity to the anticonvulsant carbamazepine and its analogs was investigated both in vivo and in vitro by patch tests and lymphocyte proliferation assays, respectively.

Pigeon serum (PS) is one of the most common causes of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). PS-induced HP was examined in a dog model. The dogs (n = 6) were immunized by i.m. injections of PS, followed by insufflation with aerosolized PS, while all control dogs (n = 3) received saline only. Plants from the Verbenaceae family may cause contact dermatitis of unknown nature. This report describes 2 cases of allergic reactions to the Verbena species. A teenage boy developed an anaphylactic allergic response following contact with the leaves of Verbena hybrida. BACKGROUND: Natural rubber latex (NRL) causes immediate, IgE-mast cell-mediated reactions in sensitized individuals, especially among health care workers and children with spina bifida. The immunopathogenesis of the reaction is obscure.
METHODS: To study the immunologic mechanisms of NRL allergy, rabbits were sensitized with two nonammoniated and one ammoniated NRL antigens. Subcutaneous and intratracheal injections were used to immunize rabbits. An autopsy was performed on a patient who had chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis that was observed for 9 years. The patient was a farmer who developed symptoms every March through July during the use of moist hay that was infected heavily with Candida. Precipitins and an inhalation challenge test to C albicans were positive. We interpret the role of C albicans in this case.

Between April 1982 and August 1985, seven cases of mushroom worker's lung (MWL), a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, were diagnosed among workers at one mushroom farm in Florida. We evaluated the predictive value of immediate epicutaneous (prick) skin testing in 36 patients receiving a heterologous protein of equine origin, antithymocyte globulin (ATG), for bone marrow failure. Three of the 36 patients had positive epicutaneous test results. Two of these three received ATG treatment; one died of anaphylaxis while the other was desensitized successfully. Xeroderma pigmentosum patients, in addition to ultraviolet-induced skin cancers, have an increased prevalence of neoplasms occurring in sites shielded from ultraviolet radiation. We postulated that these internal neoplasms might be related to ingestion of dietary carcinogens.
