Conradi-Hünermann-Happle syndrome.

A seven-year-old girl was born with red, scaly skin that later evolved into hypopigmentation and follicular atrophoderma in a widespread distribution that followed Blaschko lines. She also had patchy, scarring alopecia, left microphthalmia, bilateral cataracts, dysmorphic facies, short stature, hip dysplasia, and vertebral abnormalities. An elevated plasma 8(9)-cholestenol level confirmed the diagnosis of Conradi-Hünermann-Happle syndrome, which is caused by mutations in the emopamil binding protein (EBP) gene. This reports highlights the evolution of clinical findings over time in this X-link…

Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides: report of five cases with ultrastructural observations.

Five dark-skinned individuals presented with widespread well-demarcated hypopigmented lesions, biopsy of which revealed the histopathologica … f the epidermal infiltrate with PUVA therapy. Mycosis fungoides may present with areas of cutaneous hypopigmentation.

[Pigmentary disorders induced by anticancer agents. Part II: targeted therapies].

Most targeted anticancer therapies induce dermatological toxicities that are often predominant. In particular, pigmentary changes are frequent and relatively characteristic, and they present most often as depigmentation. In this review, we describe the main pigmentary disorders observed with these new therapies, which affect the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. Hyperpigmentation secondary to MEK or EGFR inhibitors will be described, as well as forms of hypopigmentation specific to several tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib, sunitinib and pazopanib), blue dots induced by vandetanib, an…

Pigmentary disorders in Latin America.

Pigmentary disorders with hypopigmentation/depigmentation or hyperpigmentation may have special manifestations in Latin America. Most pigmentary disorders are commonly observed in all areas of Latin America, but a few are particularly seen in tropical and subtropical regions. In most pigmentary disorder ailments described, multiple factors involved in their pathogenesis are known, but etiology remains elusive. Some pigmentary disorders have peculiar clinical expressions and, in spite of being restricted to certain geographical areas, they may be observed in other world areas because of frequen…

Clinico-neuropathological study of incontinentia pigmenti achromians--an autopsy case.

A clinico-neuropathological study of a Japanese girl with hypomelanosis of Ito, one of the neurocutaneous syndromes, is reported. At birth, typical skin hypopigmentation on the trunk and a hypopigmented streak on the left lower extremity were noted. From 2 months of age, intractable convulsions occurred and EEG showed various abnormalities. Psychomotor development was severely retarded and she died of pneumonia at the age of 13 months. Neuropathological examination revealed brachycephaly, micropolygyria and asymmetry of lateral ventricles. A histological examination showed a disarray of cortic…

Low vision rehabilitation of the albino patient.

From the eye care professional's point of view, the three most common types of albinism are tyrosinase-negative oculocutaneous albinism, tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albinism and ocular albinism. Skin and uveal hypopigmentation is variable in this condition depending on the type of albinism. However, all types of albinism lack the necessary uveal pigmentation have subnormal visual acuity. Using low vision rehabilitation techniques such as modifying lighting and providing telescopic optical devices, these patients can experience dramatic improvements in functional visual acuity. This manu…

[Anthropological aspects of skin color].

The highly variable spectrum of colors of human skin depends primarily on differences in the activity of the melanocytes and the melanin con … considered: hyperpigmentation, additional keratinization, increased deposition of carotenoids, and hypopigmentation.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex and mottled pigmentation: a new dominant syndrome. I. Clinical and histological features.

A family is reported in which 11 members presented epidermolysis bullosa simplex with some unusual features, and 10 of whom had congenital mottled hyper- and hypopigmentation of the skin. Both anomalies are inherited together in an autosomal dominant fashion, although dominant X-linkage cannot be excluded. The epidermolysis without dyspigmentation in the 11th individual suggests that the syndrome in the other 10 members is due to genetic linkage of two independent genes and not to pleiotropism of a single mutant gene. The mottled pigmentation seems distinct from previously known dyspigmentatio…

Chemical leukoderma: An insight of pathophysiology and contributing factors.

Chemical leukoderma, or chemical-based vitiligo, is a dermal disease triggered by exposure to chemicals and characterized by the emergence of depigmentation or hypopigmentation of the skin. The etiology of this condition is associated with exposure to various chemical substances present in both occupational and non-occupational settings. The precise mechanism that underlies chemical leukoderma remains elusive and is believed to result from the demise of melanocytes, which are responsible for producing skin pigments. This condition has gained particular prominence in developing countries like I…
