Automated scheme of plaque classification based on segmentation in carotid ultrasound images using transformer approach.

PURPOSE: Carotid plaque is a major risk factor for cerebral infarction. Ultrasonography (US) is extensively used for screening carotid plaque, but US images contain more noise than those of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the edges of the plaque regions are unclear. In addition, B-mode echogenicity evaluation, which is important for plaque risk assessment, has challenges involving the subjectivity of the evaluator. Although previous studies on carotid plaque assessment have included plaque segmentation, most studies involved manual operations. In this study, we propose

Reconstruction of patient-specific confounders in AI-based radiologic image interpretation using generative pretraining.

Reliably detecting potentially misleading patterns in automated diagnostic assistance systems, such as those powered by artificial intelligence (AI), is crucial for instilling user trust and ensuring reliability. Current techniques fall short in visualizing such confounding factors. We propose DiffChest, a self-conditioned diffusion model trained on 515,704 chest radiographs from 194,956 patients across the US and Europe. DiffChest provides patient-specific explanations and visualizes confounding factors that might mislead the model. The high inter-reader agreement, with Fleiss' kappa values o

Simultaneous EEG/functional magnetic resonance imaging at 4 Tesla: correlates of brain activity to spontaneous alpha rhythm during relaxation.

: Simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging have been applied to the study of brain states associated with alpha waves using a magnetic field strength of 1.5 Tesla and has been shown in recent years to be feasible up to 3 Tesla for other applications. This study demonstrates this technique's continued viability at a field strength of 4 Tesla, affording a proportionally greater sensitivity to changes in Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal. In addition, for the study of alpha correlations, the authors used a larger number of subjects and scanning sessions than in the prev

Sonography of the acute scrotum: the four T's of testicular imaging.

The scrotum is frequently imaged on an emergent basis. The differential diagnosis of the acute scrotum can be divided into four categories-torsion, trauma, tumor, and "testiculitis" (epididymo-orchitis). Although testicular neoplasms are not imaged emergently, 15% are detected incidentally when performing an emergent scrotal ultrasound. Therefore, the emergent sonographic examination of the testicles should include a thorough search for malignancy. Images demonstrating the sonographic and color Doppler appearances of each of the "four T's" will be reviewed. The radiographic review will focus o

Analytic noise-propagation in indirect fan-beam FBP reconstruction.

Precise knowledge of the local image noise is an essential ingredient to efficient application of post-processing methods such as wavelet or diffusion filtering to computed tomography (CT) images. The non-stationary, object dependent nature of noise in CT images is a direct result from the noise present in the projection data. Since quantum and electronics noise are the dominating noise sources, comparably simple models can be used for direct noise estimates in the individual projections. In this article, we describe the analytic propagation of these noise estimates through fan-beam filtered b

Optimization of psoriasis assessment system based on patch images.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that occurs in various forms throughout the body and is associated with certain conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression. The psoriasis area severity index (PASI) score, a tool used to evaluate the severity of psoriasis, is currently used in clinical trials and clinical research. The determination of severity is based on the subjective judgment of the clinician. Thus, the disease evaluation deviations are induced. Therefore, we propose optimal algorithms that can effectively segment the lesion area and classify the severity. In

Automatic and quantitative measurement of laryngeal video stroboscopic images.

The laryngeal video stroboscope is an important instrument for physicians to analyze abnormalities and diseases in the glottal area. Stroboscope has been widely used around the world. However, without quantized indices, physicians can only make subjective judgment on glottal images. We designed a new laser projection marking module and applied it onto the laryngeal video stroboscope to provide scale conversion reference parameters for glottal imaging and to convert the physiological parameters of glottis. Image processing technology was used to segment the important image regions of interest.

Fully balanced steady-state 3D-spin-echo (bSSSE) imaging at 3 Tesla.

In this work a 3D fully balanced steady-state spin-echo sequence (bSSSE) was designed and implemented on a 3-Tesla whole-body MR scanner. In contrast to previously introduced nonbalanced SSSE (nbSSSE) sequences, bSSSE features fully rewound imaging gradients. Additionally, all phase encodings and the readout prephasing are performed after the refocusing pulse. Its performance was compared with previously used gradient-echo (GE) and nbSSSE sequences. The signal response of each sequence was simulated by numerical solution of the Bloch equation. All sequences were then optimized based on these s

DiffusionTBAD: Rendering CTA images for type B aortic dissection diagnosis.

The success of diffusion models in medical imaging highlights their potential to generate high-quality synthetic datasets that closely resemble real clinical data, addressing limited dataset availability and patient privacy concerns. We present DiffusionTBAD, a novel text-to-image diffusion-based pipeline for synthesizing diagnostically accurate computed tomography angiography (CTA) images of type B aortic dissection (TBAD). Using few-shot learning, DiffusionTBAD fine-tunes a diffusion model guided by textual prompts to capture the distinct features and variability of TBAD cases. The synthetic

A hybrid ViT-L/32-MaxViT-L architecture with adaptive gated fusion for multiclass gastrointestinal disease detection and multi-method post-hoc explainability.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate detection of gastrointestinal diseases from endoscopic images remains challenging due to substantial inter-class similarity, intra-class variability, and heterogeneous lesion presentation. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) effectively capture fine mucosal textures, their limited receptive field restricts global contextual reasoning. Conversely, transformer architectures model long-range dependencies but may underrepresent localized structural detail. METHODS: This study proposes a dual-branch hybrid transformer framework that integrates global token-level reaso

Bilateral Information-Guided Diagnosis of Breast Masses in Mammography Using Vision Transformer.

Early-stage breast cancer is often asymptomatic, highlighting the critical role of computer-aided diagnostic(CAD) systems in mammography screening. While radiologists often refer to bilateral symmetry to identify abnormalities, most existing CAD methods analyze unilateral views or require image registration, which limits their ability to model structural heterogeneity and often introduces distortion. To address this, we propose a registration-free, structure-aware diagnostic framework that integrates bilateral mammography with soft spatial prompting via Vision Transformers (ViT). By directly c

Improving Crohn's disease lesion detection in capsule endoscopy with an advanced feature pyramid network.

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy (CE) is an essential tool for detecting various lesions in the small bowel and plays a crucial role in assessing Crohn's disease (CD). However, manual interpretation of CE images is time-consuming and susceptible to missed detections, primarily due to multi-scale lesions, complex backgrounds, and ambiguous boundaries. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose ISFPE-Net, a novel feature pyramid network for robust multi-scale lesion detection in CE images. The network incorporates two key modules: the Cross-Dual Attention Fusion (CDAF) module, which adaptive

Transformer-Based Feature Extraction and Optimized Deep Neural Network for Gastric Cancer Detection.

Gastric cancer is among the most common diseases worldwide and can lead to fatal outcomes. Early diagnosis significantly increases the success of treatment, and accurate and rapid analysis of histopathological images is of enormous importance. However, since manual evaluation of these images is time-consuming and open to observational errors, the need for automatic diagnosis systems supported by artificial intelligence is increasing. In this study, a multi-stage artificial intelligence-based model that performs cancer detection on gastric histopathological images is proposed. In the first stag

UniSAL: Unified Semi-supervised Active Learning for histopathological image classification.

Histopathological image classification using deep learning is crucial for accurate and efficient cancer diagnosis. However, annotating a large amount of histopathological images for training is costly and time-consuming, leading to a scarcity of available labeled data for training deep neural networks. To reduce human efforts and improve efficiency for annotation, we propose a Unified Semi-supervised Active Learning framework (UniSAL) that effectively selects informative and representative samples for annotation. First, unlike most existing active learning methods that only train from labeled

Efficient diagnosis of retinal disorders using dual-branch semi-supervised learning (DB-SSL): An enhanced multi-class classification approach.

The early diagnosis of retinal disorders is essential in preventing permanent or partial blindness. Identifying these conditions promptly guarantees early treatment and prevents blindness. However, the challenge lies in accurately diagnosing these conditions, especially with limited labeled data. This study aims to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of retinal disorders using a novel Dual-Branch Semi-Supervised Learning (DB-SSL) approach that leverages both labeled and unlabeled data for multi-class classification of eye diseases. Employing Color Fundus Photography (CFP), our research integrates

Automating Prostate Cancer Grading: A Novel Deep Learning Framework for Automatic Prostate Cancer Grade Assessment using Classification and Segmentation.

Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men and affects more than a million people each year. Grading prostate cancer is based on the Gleason grading system, a subjective and labor-intensive method for evaluating prostate tissue samples. The variability in diagnostic approaches underscores the urgent need for more reliable methods. By integrating deep learning technologies and developing automated systems, diagnostic precision can be improved, and human error minimized. The present work introduces a three-stage framework-based innovative deep-learning system for assessing PCa

Detecting and Classifying Mycetoma in Histopathological Images Using DenseNet and U-Net.

Mycetoma, recognised by the WHO as a Neglected Tropical Disease, has significant diagnostic hurdles which lead to severe health consequences. Mycetoma can be caused by certain types of bacteria (actinomycetoma) or fungi (eumycetoma). Identifying whether mycetoma is bacterial or fungal plays a significant role in treatment planning, and an incorrect diagnosis can seriously affect patient prognosis and outcome. This paper explored the feasibility of using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) computer vision methods to effectively detect and diagnose mycetoma grains from histopathologica

ACDSSNet: Atrous Convolution-Based Deep Semantic Segmentation Network for Efficient Detection of Sickle Cell Anemia.

In medical image processing, semantic segmentation plays an important role since, in most applications, it is required to find the exact location of the anomaly. It is tough than the segmentation or classification task since in this task class-belongingness of each pixel is predicted. The presence of noise, and variations of viewpoint, shape, and size of cells make it more challenging. In this work, two novel Atrous Convolution-based Deep Semantic Segmentation Networks: ACDSSNet-I, ACDSSNet-II are proposed for more accurate Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) detection, which can mitigate these issues.
