Fleshy specificity: (re)considering transsexual subjects in lesbian communities.

The transsexual subject position has recently been subsumed under the labeling "transgender." This article considers the implications of this new labeling for transsexual subjects and their capacity to be incorporated into, or at least configured as affiliated with, lesbian communities and their popularization of transgender terminology. By tracing the complicated academic and political etymology of "transgender," this article shows how the term unfairly erases the lived experiences of transsexual subjects by ignoring their specificities in the flesh. The article concludes by offering alternat

[Control of Echinococcus multilocularis in Central Europe-- possibilities and limitations].

Human alveolar echinococcosis is a life-threatening parasitic zoonosis which occurs in rare cases in Central Europe. It is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis. In this publication, strategies for the control of parasites of the genus Echinococcus are reviewed and discussed with regard to their applicability to E. multilocularis on the background of the epidemiological situation in Central Europe. First results of field studies are presented in which strategies based on the application of praziquantel-containing baits to foxes have been tried. Requirements concerning the s

Centerfold. An essay on excitement.

A woman who poses for soft-core pornography reports that she has never felt she belonged to her body, that she is and wants only to be an erotic product manufactured by a team of specialists for the use of a viewing audience of males, that since age 5 she has been a nude dancer, and that she has no other material existence except in this form. She is, then, a fetish. Her success illustrates the hypothesis that erotic daydreams in pronography represent fantasies of revenge in which the consumer imagines he is degrading--dehumanizing--women.

Dynamic motor imagery, but not pre-execution movements, enhances serve tennis performance.

Pre-serve preparatory movements including imagery and air movements are commonly observed in tennis players during both training and competition. The present study compared the effects of pre-performance explicit dynamic motor imagery (MI) and slight preparatory movements in young regional-level tennis players. Twenty players (M=12.94 years) with 4 to 6 years of regular practice completed four counterbalanced experimental conditions, namely Control (neutral counting task), Dynamic MI (external visual imagery combined with slight movements mimicking the serve), Slight movements and Slight movem

Effects of object familiarity on children's silent gestures.

When gesturing (with or without speech) actions done with objects, young children and adults with apraxia often produce a body-part-as-object (BPO), like an extended finger for a toothbrush. In contrast, older children and neurotypical adults often produce an imagined object (IO), like pretending to hold a toothbrush. The purpose of this study was to test whether IOs are produced when children have a rich conceptual understanding of the functions of an object. If so, children should produce more IOs (relative to BPOs) with familiar than with unfamiliar objects. Children between three and five

Association between visuo-spatial working memory and gait motor imagery.

Although motor imagery and working memory (WM) appear to be closely linked, no previous studies have demonstrated direct evidence for the relationship between motor imagery and WM abilities. This study investigated the association between WM and gait motor imagery and focused on the individual differences in young adults. This study included 33 participants (mean age: 22.2 ± 0.9 years). We used two methods to measure the ability of different WM domains: verbal and visuo-spatial WM. Gait motor imagery accuracy was assessed via the mental chronometry paradigm. We measured the times participants

Unlocking the power of motor imagery: a comprehensive review on its application in alleviating foot pain.

BACKGROUND: Motor imagery is a cognitive process that involves mentally simulating movements without physical execution. It has been studied in the context of foot pain to understand the role of motor cortical reorganization and its impact on motor imagery abilities. However, further research is needed to establish consistent evidence regarding the relationship between motor imagery and foot pain. METHODS: This review analyzed five relevant articles that investigated motor imagery in the context of foot pain. The studies involved participants with various conditions, including leg amputation,

Colors in the mind's eye.

The famous "Piazza del Duomo" paper, published in Cortex in 1978, inspired a considerable amount of research on visual mental imagery in brain-damaged patients. As a consequence, single-case reports featuring dissociations between perceptual and imagery abilities challenged the prevailing model of visual mental imagery. Here we focus on mental imagery for colors. A case study published in Cortex showed perfectly preserved color imagery in a patient with acquired achromatopsia after bilateral lesions at the borders between the occipital and temporal cortex. Subsequent neuroimaging findings in h

Optimizing Motor Intention Detection With Deep Learning: Towards Management of Intraoperative Awareness.

OBJECTIVE: This article shows the interest in deep learning techniques to detect motor imagery (MI) from raw electroencephalographic (EEG) signals when a functional electrical stimulation is added or not. Impacts of electrode montages and bandwidth are also reported. The perspective of this work is to improve the detection of intraoperative awareness during general anesthesia. METHODS: Various architectures of EEGNet were investigated to optimize MI detection. They have been compared to the state-of-the-art classifiers in Brain-Computer Interfaces (based on Riemannian geometry, linear discrim

Quantifying aphantasia through drawing: Those without visual imagery show deficits in object but not spatial memory.

Congenital aphantasia is a recently characterized variation of experience defined by the inability to form voluntary visual imagery, in individuals who are otherwise high performing. Because of this specific deficit to visual imagery, individuals with aphantasia serve as an ideal group for probing the nature of representations in visual memory, particularly the interplay of object, spatial, and symbolic information. Here, we conducted a large-scale online study of aphantasia and revealed a dissociation in object and spatial content in their memory representations. Sixty-one individuals with ap

Modulation of Hoffmann reflex excitability during action observation of walking with and without motor imagery.

Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) are used for motor impairment rehabilitation after neurological disorders, such as spinal cord injuries or strokes. Clinical studies have reported that rehabilitation using AO and MI is effective in restoring motor function. Our previous study showed a difference in the modulation of corticospinal excitability only during action observation (AO) of walking and AO of walking combined with motor imagery (AO + MI). However, it is unclear whether AO and AO + MI can modulate spinal reflex excitability as well as corticospinal excitability. Thus, the pu

Reversing one's fortune by pushing away bad luck.

Across cultures, people try to "undo" bad luck with superstitious rituals such as knocking on wood, spitting, or throwing salt. We suggest that these rituals reduce the perceived likelihood of anticipated negative outcomes because they involve avoidant actions that exert force away from one's representation of self, which simulates the experience of pushing away bad luck. Five experiments test this hypothesis by having participants tempt fate and then engage in avoidant actions that are either superstitious (Experiment 1, knocking on wood) or nonsuperstitious (Experiments 2-5, throwing a ball)

"Complete motor locked-in" and consequences for the concept of minimally conscious state.

The demonstration by Monti et al. (2010) of willful modulation of brain activity in persistent vegetative state implies the exceptional condition of a "complete motor locked-in syndrome." As a consequence, the contradictory character of the diagnosis minimally conscious state should be recognized because behaviorally observed minimal cognitive responsiveness does not exclude a higher level of well-differentiated self-consciousness. Introduction of the descriptive entities "complete motor locked-in syndrome" and "minimal cognitive responsiveness" is therefore advocated in the service of diagnos

Motor imagery influences the execution of repetitive finger opposition movements.

Motor imagery (MI) is the ability to imagine performing a movement without executing it. In literature, there have been numerous reports on the influence of MI on motor practice and the beneficial effects of "mental practice" on the physical performance has been suggested to rely to the close temporal association between motor rehearsal and actual performance. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether the addition of a period of motor imagery between two motor practice trials could modify movement execution in a repetitive finger opposition motor task performed at maximal speed and wh

The neural correlates of visual mental imagery: an ongoing debate.

The functional mechanisms and the neural correlates of visual mental imagery (the faculty whereby we can use our "mind's eye" to visualize objects in their absence) are at the centre of a lively debate in cognitive neuroscience. Neurocognitive models have proposed a functional equivalence between visual perception and visual mental imagery, which would be subserved by common neural substrates, such as the retinotopic areas in the occipital lobe. However, brain-damaged patients may demonstrate either impaired imagery and preserved perception, such as the classical Charcot and Bernard case and t

Visual cognition: a new look at the two-visual systems model.

In this paper, we argue that no valid comparison between visual representations can arise unless provision is made for three critical properties: their direction of fit, their direction of causation and the level of their conceptual content. The conceptual content in turn is a function of the level of processing. Representations arising from earlier stages of processing of visual input have very little or no conceptual content. Higher order representations get their conceptual content from the connections between visual cognition and other parts of the human cognitive system. The two other cri

Disturbance of motor imagery after cerebellar stroke.

The authors studied the possible involvement of the cerebellum in nonexecutive motor functions needed for a normal performance of complex motor patterns by analyzing (using chronometric evaluation) finger movement sequences and their respective motor imagery (a mental simulation of motor patterns). Patients suffering from a cerebellar stroke (n=11) were compared with aged-matched control volunteers (n=11). Patients that had apparently recovered from a unilateral cerebellar stroke showed a marked slowing of motor performance in both hands (ipsi- and contralateral to lesion). This effect was acc

Effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings.

The present study investigated the effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings. Forty-two women were randomly assigned to a hungry (no food for prior 4h) or not hungry condition. Participants were asked to form and maintain images of desired foods while looking at a blank computer screen (control condition) or performing a task designed to load the visuo-spatial sketchpad of working memory (dynamic visual noise). They then rated the vividness of their images and their craving intensity. Although hungry participants reported stronger food cravings, dynamic
