Review of coccidioidomycosis in immunocompromised children.

Only 13 cases of coccidioidomycosis in immunocompromised children have been previously reported. Of the reported cases, seven children had extrapulmonary involvement and died, while the six children with disease limited to the lungs survived the infection. A leukemic child who was treated for disseminated coccidioidomycosis and survived is described. Reviews of immunocompromised adult patients with coccidioidomycosis suggest factors that might be related to dissemination. Similar factors for immunocompromised children could not be defined, thus suggesting the need for more information regardin

Evaluation of the use of the Hemalog D in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and disseminated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in children.

In 79 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and in 18 children with disseminated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma we investigated whether the automated cytochemical differential leucocyte count (Hemalog D) gives more accurate information than the manual differential count. We concluded that the manual count is superior to the Hemalog-D count with regard to the recognition of blast cells. Furthermore, Hemalog D is not helpful for the differentiation between acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and disseminated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Social networks applied to Dengue, H1N1, and Zika epidemics: An integrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Health crises occur both regionally and globally. Online social networks are widely used technical resources that allow users to share large amounts of information with increasing reach and velocity. Thus, the capacity of spreading information about epidemics through social media allows members of a population and health professionals or agencies to collaborate. METHOD: This study presents results obtained in an integrative review, including examples of how social media enabled collaboration in health surveillance to treat the epidemies of Dengue, Zika, and H1N1. The literature re

English Text Recognition Deep Learning Framework to Automatically Identify Fake News.

Fake news spreading rapidly worldwide is considered one of the most severe problems of modern technology that needs to be addressed immediately. The remarkable increase in the use of social media as a critical source of information combined with the shaking of trust in traditional media, the high speed of digital news dissemination, and the vast amount of information circulating on the Internet have exacerbated the problem of so-called fake news. The present work proves the importance of detecting fake news by taking advantage of the information derived from friendships between users. Specific

Spreading the Word: Communicating Evidence-Based Guidelines About Turner Syndrome to Patients, Parents, Providers, and Payors.

Given the overwhelming volume of medical information, medical guidelines play a key role in informing clinicians and payors and guidelines directly affect how patients, and their families will be treated. In this review, we describe the production cycle of international guidelines for Turner syndrome (TS) and promote the timely and proactive dissemination of these guidelines. We encourage deliberate adoption of an updated standard of care by providers, payors, patients and their families, and professional organizations.

The application of an information support robot to reduce agitation in an older adult with Alzheimer's disease living alone in a community dwelling: a case study.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Agitation is a common behaviour of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Although healing robots have previously been used for alleviating agitation for people with dementia in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, its effects remain unclear whether an information-support robot capable of disseminating information with user needs may have similar effects when it is applied in community dwellings. This study was to investigate the effects of information-support robots for reducing agitation in older people with AD residing alone in community-dwellings. METHODS: One participant w

Identification and biopsy of the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer.

AIMS: To examine the hypothesis that lymphatic dissemination in breast cancer occurs sequentially. METHODS: Thirty patients with clinically localized adenocarcinoma were studied. Patent blue dye was administered into the tumour at the beginning of a modified radical mastectomy or segmental mastectomy with en bloc axillary lymph-node dissection (ALND). In the removed specimen, blue-stained lymphatic channels were dissected from the primary tumour to the first draining lymph node(s) (sentinel node(s)). RESULTS: Identification of a sentinel node (SN) was successful in 26 patients (87%). In 10 p

Study of current and new drugs in a murine model of acute paracoccidioidomycosis.

A new murine model of acute paracoccidioidomycosis, whose features include pulmonary infection with dissemination, was used to study the efficacy of currently available drugs and new agents which might be useful clinically. Two oral imidazole drugs, ketoconazole (KTZ) and Bay l 9139 (l9); two oral triazoles, Bay n 7133 (n7) and ICI 153,066 (ICI); and two polyenes, amphotericin B (AMB) and N-D-ornithyl-amphotericin B methyl ester, were studied. KTZ was superior to n7 and l9, particularly after a less lethal challenge. The polyenes could diminish dissemination, but had only modest effects on the

A Facebook Page Created Soon After the Amatrice Earthquake for Deaf Adults and Children, Families, and Caregivers Provides an Easy Communication Tool and Social Satisfaction in Maxi-Emergencies.

Although international and Italian conventions have issued numerous communication protocols to assist people with disabilities during earthquakes or other maxi-emergencies, no tailored strategies exist to create and disseminate information online to deaf people. On August 24, 2016, a devastating earthquake destroyed Amatrice in Central Italy. This natural disaster underlined the lack of information on disabled people possibly involved and the lack of tailored, online communication tools. Having various registries listing disabled residents in the earthquake area might have benefitted emergency

Supervised exercise-based rehabilitation for people with intermittent claudication-Study protocol for a Danish implementation process (StRiDE).

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent claudication is a peripheral artery disease caused by arteriosclerosis. People with intermittent claudication experience leg cramping during walking, with relief of symptoms during rest. Evidence shows that by participating in supervised exercise therapy and smoking cessation programs, people with intermittent claudication can reduce those symptoms and improve health-related quality of life and maximal walking distance while minimizing the need for an operation. However, implementation of such health-promoting initiatives in clinical practice in Denmark and other cou

Serial changes in pleural lavage cytology during lung cancer surgery predict recurrence and pleural dissemination.

PURPOSE: Pleural lavage cytology (PLC) is a recognized prognostic marker in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, the impact of serial intraoperative changes remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 439 patients who underwent curative NSCLC resection. PLC was performed at three intraoperative points: after thoracotomy (pre-PLC), after lung resection, and after lavage at chest closure (post-PLC). Associations between recurrence-free survival (RFS) and pleural dissemination were evaluated by a Kaplan-Meier analysis and Fine and Gray competing risks regression. RESULTS: Fort

Detrimental impact of temporomandibular disorders (mis)beliefs and possible strategies to overcome.

AIM: This topical review presents common patients' misbeliefs about temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and discusses their possible impact on the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. We also discussed the possible influence of the beliefs and behaviours of healthcare providers on the beliefs of patients with TMD and suggested possible strategies to overcome the negative impacts of such misbeliefs. METHODS: This topical review was based on a non-systematic search for studies about the beliefs of patients and healthcare professionals about TMD in PubMed and Embase. RESULTS: Patients' beliefs can
