Background Prophylactic antifungals are often used in high-risk babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to reduce invasive fungal infections (IFIs). However, existing guidelines regarding prophylactic antifungal usage do not clearly define the high-risk population. This study aimed to assess the practices related to prophylactic antifungal use in NICUs in India. Methods For this cross-sectional study, an online structured questionnaire was completed by neonatologists who worked in level 3 NICUs in 12 states in India during the period June 2022 to August 2022. Results Data from 151 NICU

BACKGROUND: During the administrative admittance of extreme premature twin neonates to the Hospital Information System (HIS), at an Israeli government general hospital, a third virtual baby was mistakenly admitted in addition to the twins. The third virtual baby's records were in department occupancy and transactions were performed in the HIS, such as "admittance" to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), being appended to a mother as well as clinical orders.
METHODS: Once noticed, the records of the third virtual baby were merged in the system with the second correct twin (Baby II), whose reco

Targeted neonatal echocardiography (TNE) involves the use of comprehensive echocardiography to appraise cardiovascular physiology and neonatal hemodynamics to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic precision in the neonatal intensive care unit. Since the last publication of guidelines for TNE in 2011, the field has matured through the development of formalized neonatal hemodynamics fellowships, clinical programs, and the expansion of scientific knowledge to further enhance clinical care. The most common indications for TNE include adjudication of hemodynamic significance of a patent ductus arterio

BACKGROUND: Lung ultrasound and targeted echocardiography let the neonatal team examine lungs and heart at the cot side, but neither shows the airway. Flexible bronchoscopy does, and it is increasingly performed inside the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
METHODS: Narrative review of published series of flexible bronchoscopy in infants cared for in neonatal units, supported by pediatric intensive care studies and society standards. Certainty of evidence was not graded.
RESULTS: Twelve neonatal series (652 infants) were identified; all but one were single-center and most were retrospectiv

INTRODUCTION: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) may manifest with infections, immune dysregulation, syndromic features, and multisystem involvement. Critically ill neonates and children admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) with severe or atypical presentations may harbor underlying IEI, posing significant diagnostic challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, consultation indications, immunological findings, warning signs, and diagnostic outcomes of patients assessed for suspected IEI in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units.
METHODS: We retrospectively revie

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) preparations are listed as high-alert medications and have a high probability of medication errors (MEs). Board-certified Nutrition Support Pharmacists (BCNSPs) can play an important role in reducing PN-associated complications by highlighting the gaps in the PN prescribing process. This study aimed to determine the impact of BCNSP-led PN review on the identification and documentation of prescribing MEs (PMEs) to optimize quality and safety in PN prescribing processes.
METHODS: This QI quasi-experimental study included all neonates admitted to a level III

There is a lack of focus on psychological support for fathers in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), both in research and practice, with fathers receiving far less support from NICU providers as compared with mothers. This article aims to discuss the current literature and limitations related to providing psychological support to fathers in the NICU and proposes short- and long-term efforts for improving psychological care for NICU fathers. We conducted a narrative literature review to summarize interventions for supporting fathers in the NICU, including emotional support, educational suppo

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in neonatal intensive care, mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remains a persistent reality. Most deaths now occur after withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining therapies (WWLST), yet some remain sudden or unanticipated. Understanding how and under which circumstances infants die is essential to improving anticipatory communication, ethical consistency, and family-centered support in neonatal end-of-life (EOL) care.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all infants who died in the tertiary NICU of Montpellier University Hos

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of neonate microbiota carriage, particularly multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and Bacillus cereus , could help prevent infection. We evaluated the presence of these in the stools of hospitalized infants, duration of isolation and risk of infection in infants with digestive carriage of MDROs or B. cereus.
METHODS: In a population-based retrospective study, we analyzed the results of weekly stool cultures performed from birth to discharge, in all hospitalized newborns from January 2018 to September 2020, in a single tertiary unit. Information regarding infections w

INTRODUCTION: Military Health System (MHS)-insured newborns receive care in military and civilian hospitals. Differences in delivery location and corresponding payment schemas raise questions regarding possible health system effects on utilization and outcomes. We hypothesize that newborn utilization and clinical outcomes differ between military and civilian hospitals and that the differences may be more pronounced among lower risk newborns (i.e., late preterm and non-preterm infants).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The newborn cohort comprised live births captured in DoD Birth and Infant Health Resea
