BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) remains incurable with standard dose chemotherapy. Nucleoside analogs such as fludarabine are effective, but even when used as initial therapy, the median duration of remission ranges from only 16 to 24 months. Interferon (IFN) is also active and has been investigated both by incorporating it into the chemotherapy regimen and/or as maintenance therapy, where it may prolong remission. We studied the immunological and virological effects of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy in nine patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM/TSP). After therapy, the percentages of CCR5+ cells in CD4+ cells significantly decreased in the cerebrospinal fluid as well as blood. A 63-year-old man contracted hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) from a blood transfusion at age of 18. AIM: To measure serum androgen concentrations in men with HIV related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) who had been treated with recombinant interferon (IFN) alpha-2a to determine the role of androgens on the development of KS lesions.
