Colonic obstruction in a child with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis.

A child is reported who developed partial colonic obstruction from an intussuscepting polypoid mass in the transverse colon. A 5 cm plexiform ganglioneurofibroma was found at laparotomy. Examination of the entire gastrointestinal tract revealed no other neurogenic tumors. Gastrointestinal involvement by neurofibromatosis in children is rare; however, children with von Recklinghausen's disease who complain of vague abdominal symptoms should be evaluated for gastrointestinal tumors.

Colonic lipomas: clinical significance and management.

Colonic lipomas are uncommon tumors but do constitute the most common nonepithelial tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. They tend to occur in an older population and rarely cause symptoms. However, if a lipoma discovered by barium enema or colonoscopy is causing symptoms of obstruction or bleeding, the tumors may require surgical removal. Rarely, as in our patient, the bleeding lipoma may be sufficiently pedunculated to allow safe colonoscopic removal. In general, lipomas of the colon are curiosities that must be distinguished from adenomatous polyps.

Adenocarcinoma occurring in a hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyp of the colon.

A case of adenocarcinoma occurring in a hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyp of the colon is presented. The polyp, two cm in diameter, was located in the transverse colon of a 45-year-old male patient, and was removed endoscopically. From the periphery to the centre, the polyp showed epithelial changes progressing from hyperplastic to severely dysplastic, terminating in a central focus of invasive adenocarcinoma. It is suggested that the considerable number of absorptive cells in large hyperplastic polyps may occasionally result in an excessive absorption of carcinogen thus leading to dysplastic c

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of sigmoid colon.

A case of inflammatory fibroid polyp of the sigmoid colon is presented. This is the eight case of this type of polyp in the colon and, to the best of our knowledge, the first one involving the sigmoid and producing intussusception. Symptomatology of the inflamed fibroid polyp in this part of the gut closely simulates gastrointestinal malignancy. The treatment is surgical excision of the polyp, or colonoscopic resection when it is possible. Intraoperative colonoscopy helps the surgeon to localize the lesion and to role out the existence of other lesions.

Osseous metaplasia in a rectal polyp.

Rectal polyps are finger-like projections of the mucosal surface that generally present with complaints of bleeding or mass per rectum. Polyps are classified histopathologically as neoplastic and non-neoplastic. Here, we present one such rare case of a middle-childhood boy who presented with complaints of bleeding per-rectum and revealed a 1.5 cm long rectal polyp. Histopathological examination revealed an osseous change in the rectal polyp. A detailed literature review of reported cases of benign rectal polyps with osseous metaplasia was conducted and consolidated all postulated theories of p

Gastrointestinal and Nongastrointestinal Complications of Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and Colonoscopy in the Real World: A Nationwide Standard Cohort Using the Common Data Model Database.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The global trend of an expanding aged population has increased concerns about complications correlated with gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in elderly patients; however, there have been few reports published on this issue. METHODS: In this retrospective, observational cohort study performed between 2012 and 2017, serious complications of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, and colonoscopic polypectomy were compared between patients according to age (≥65 years vs 18-64 years). We used the Health Insurance Review and Assessment-National Patient Samples database, prev

Sonographic features of a juvenile polyp: a case report and literature review.

Juvenile polyps are a rare form of gastrointestinal polyps and are generally diagnosed by colonoscopy or barium enema. In this article, we describe the case of a 3-year-old girl with a large juvenile polyp that was diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound. Ultrasound examination is necessary for children who pass dark red bloody stools either with or without abdominal pain. In addition, mechanical bowel preparation before ultrasonic testing is helpful to enable the detection of intraluminal lesions.
