Cross-sectional survey of HIV infection among patients with tuberculosis in Nairobi, Kenya.

Evidence from many countries suggests an association of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis of major public health significance. In order to begin assessing the impact of HIV on tuberculosis in Kenya, we have determined the HIV-1 seroprevalence among tuberculosis patients and compared the clinical characteristics of tuberculosis in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients in two cross-sectional studies at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) and the Ngaira Avenue Chest Clinic (NACC), Nairobi, Kenya. The diagnosis in 92% of all patients with pulmonary tuberculosis was c…

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli serotype O111:HNT isolated from preterm neonates in Nairobi, Kenya.

This investigation was initiated as a consequence of several cases of diarrhea in a nursery ward for preterm babies in Nairobi, Kenya. Ten lactose-positive colonies were isolated from the stools of each of 30 neonates, regardless of whether they had diarrhea; 229 strains were identified as Escherichia coli and 65 strains were identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae. Six strains were lost during laboratory handling. No other bacterial, viral, or parasitic enteropathogens were identified. Using synthetic alkaline phosphatase-labeled probes, the bacterial isolates were found to be negative for the pr…

Correlates of Severe Psychological Distress Among Adults Living with HIV in Western Kenya.

Psychological distress among persons living with HIV (PLWH) can negatively impact behavioral and clinical outcomes. There is need for additional data surrounding mental health status in resource-constrained settings to inform intervention. We assessed social and economic factors associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety among PLWH in western Kenya. Baseline data from the Harambee cluster randomized trial were collected from May 2021 through March 2022 among 1040 PLWH (≥ 18 years of age) receiving care through the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare program. Self-reported phy…

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound Velocity Measurements in Children With Sickle Cell Disease in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited haemoglobinopathy and poses a high public health burden in Sub-Saharan Africa. Children with sickle cell anaemia are at a highrisk of ischemic stroke, and transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography helps identify those at highest risk for primary stroke prevention. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of abnormal cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in children with SCD and describe CBFV in children without SCD. METHODS: We conducted a two-component study comprising a retrospective review and a cross-sectional assessment. TC

Spatial epidemiology of intimate partner violence in Kenya: A county-level clustering analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health challenge globally. In this study, spatial analysis was done to study the distribution and clustering of IPV perpetrated against women by their current or most recent husband or intimate partner, across counties in Kenya in terms of lifetime and past 12-month prevalence. Using publicly available, county-level data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022, secondary analysis was conducted. County-level lifetime and past 12-month IPV prevalence were analysed. GeoDa 1.20.0.36 and ArcMap 10.8.1 were used for spatial analysis a…

Geospatial Analysis of Tsetse Infestation and Animal African Trypanosomiasis in Busia County, Kenya.

African trypanosomiasis (AT) is a vector-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Trypanosoma, primarily transmitted through the bite of infected tsetse flies in the genus Glossina. The disease is a major constraint to livestock production, causing reduced productivity, anemia, and mortality in affected animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2024 to assess the spatial prevalence of AAT in cattle as well as tsetse fly abundance in Busia County, Kenya. A total of 762 cattle randomly selected from seven villages in Busia County were screened for A…

Community health volunteers improve access to malaria case management in Siaya County, Kenya.

Malaria remains a major health challenge in western Kenya, where transmission persists despite decades of control efforts. Community health volunteers (CHVs) are increasingly engaged in community case management (CCM) to expand timely malaria care, but quantitative evidence of their contributions is limited. This analysis evaluated the effectiveness of CHVs in malaria case management and their impact on healthcare access in Siaya County. Data from 1.4 million encounters recorded by 936 CHVs and 86 health facilities (HFs) across 713 villages (2021-2023) were analyzed. The outcomes included cove…

Pathways between climate change and HIV health in rural Kenya: a qualitative analysis.

Climate change-related severe weather events are heavily impacting regions with the highest prevalence of HIV, creating additional vulnerabilities for already vulnerable populations. Little is understood about how people perceive or experience the mechanisms by which extreme weather events affect the health of people living with HIV (PLHIV). We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 40 PLHIV enrolled in a cluster randomized clinical trial that included 8 pairs of health facilities in rural Western Kenya, who were 18 years or older, receiving ART for > 6 m…

Detection and genetic characterization of alphacoronaviruses in co-roosting bat species, southeastern Kenya.

Bats are associated with some of the most significant and virulent emerging zoonoses globally, yet research and surveillance of bat pathogens remains limited across parts of the world. We surveyed the prevalence and genetic diversity of coronaviruses from bats in Taita Hills, southeastern Kenya, as part of ongoing surveillance efforts in this remote part of eastern Africa. We collected fecal and intestinal samples in May 2018 and March 2019 from 16 bat species. We detected one genus of coronavirus (alphacoronavirus), with an overall RNA prevalence of 6.5% (30/463). The prevalence of coronaviru…

Vaccinations, Pills, and Resistance: School Health Campaigns in Kenya During the COVID Pandemic.

Ethnographic fieldwork in rural western Kenya (2022-2023) reveals how state-led public health interventions, including COVID-19 vaccination and school-based biomedical campaigns, operate through authority, hierarchy, and coercion. Such practices foster mistrust among pupils, adolescents, and parents, provoking resistance grounded in fears about reproductive futures. Health workers and teachers, pressured to meet state mandated targets, become enforcers of these interventions, often deepening suspicion. Coercion not only raises ethical concerns but also produces lasting harm, shaping community …

Data on greenhouse gas fluxes from smallholder cropping systems in Upper Eastern Kenya.

This dataset presents greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes-carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) measurements collected from smallholder cropping systems in Chuka, Upper Eastern Kenya. The study aimed to assess the effects of different cropping systems on soil GHG fluxes, as described in a related study (Lemarpe et al., 2023). Data were collected over two cropping seasons from five cropping systems: sole maize, maize-bean intercrop, agroforestry, banana and coffee replicated three times. The study used static chambers to measure GHG fluxes, which were then analyzed using gas chro…

Genetic susceptibility to recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis in an African population from Nairobi, Kenya.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) affects 75% of women worldwide at least once in their lifetime, with up to 9% of women experiencing recurrent episodes (RVVC). Genetic differences may play a role in women developing recurrent VVC infections. Thus, we investigated genetic host factors that may increase the risk of RVVC in women from an African population. We conducted a case-control study in women in Nairobi Kenya, to identify genetic risk factors for RVVC. Our genome-wide association study compared women with RVVC (n = 174) to those with acute VVC (n = 157), and with controls (n = 347). The cont…
