Inflammatory pseudotumours are rare lesions that may appear in several organs, and sporadically in the bladder and the renal pelvis. Aetiology is unknown and they show a non-malignant behaviour although differential diagnosis with other neoplasia such as leiomyosarcoma and rabdomyosarcoma must be established. Electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry are commonly used techniques to achieve diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to examine the second case report of intrarenal inflammatory pseudotumour.

Hypertension is present in the majority of patients with chronic renal failure and constitutes a major risk factor for the very high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this patient population. Furthermore hypertension is known to be a substantial progression factor in renal disease. In the past, it had been presumed that hypertension in chronic renal failure is due to enhanced sodium retention, chronic hypervolemia and increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system. Recent studies now provide evidence that sympathetic overactivity plays an additional important role and a

Heme plays a significant pathogenic role in several diseases involving the kidney. The cellular content of heme, derived either from the delivery of filtered heme proteins such as hemoglobin and myoglobin, or from the breakdown of ubiquitous intracellular heme proteins, is regulated via the heme oxygenase enzyme system. Heme oxygenases catalyze the rate-limiting step in heme degradation, resulting in the formation of iron, carbon monoxide, and biliverdin, which is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. Recent attention has focused on the biological effects of product(s) o…

We report the first case of neurofibroma causing obstruction by external compression of the upper renal pelvis. A 33-year-old woman reported a 1-year history of dull lumbar pain on the right side. A right renal parapelvic cyst was suspected. The patient underwent retroperitoneoscopic exploration. The right renal parapelvic lesion was identified as a soft tissue tumor. The tumor was removed with a retroperitoneoscopic procedure. Histopathological findings revealed neurofibroma.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), although occurring less frequently than prostate and bladder cancer, is actually the most malignant urologic disease, killing >35% of affected patients. Therefore, investigation of the nature of premalignant lesions of the kidney is a relevant issue. Following the most recent histological classification RCC can be subdivided into four categories: conventional RCC; papillary RCC; chromophobe RCC; and collecting duct carcinoma. In contrast to many genitourinary malignancies, premalignant alterations in the kidney are scarcely described. Intratubular epithelial dysplas…

A total of 118 allograft nephrectomies (TX) were performed after 474 renal transplants (TR) (24.9%). 49.1% of the patients were immunosuppressed with azathioprine-prednisone (AZA-PRED) and 50.9% with cyclosporine-prednisone (CSA-PRED). Mean time to TX after returning to hemodialysis was 36.2 +/- 6.4 days (0-372). Acute rejection (33.1%) was the first cause of TX, followed by chronic rejection (26.3%), vascular complications (25.5%), recurrent renal disease (5.9%), non-functioning allograft (4.2%) and not clearly established cause (1.7%). The surgical technique was extracapsular in 70.3% of the

Renal dysfunction often complicates the course of liver transplant recipients. Preoperative renal dysfunction, including hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) may be present. Assessment of renal function in the pretransplant patient with end-stage liver disease is fraught with pitfalls. Direct measurement of GFR by a method other than creatinine clearance is recommended wherever possible. Preoperative renal biopsy should also be considered in those patients with renal dysfunction in whom the diagnosis of HRS is not definite. With the routine use of veno venous bypass, renal perfusion is maintained and in

In the absence of firmly established views on the development of nephropathy, we describe in this paper the embryogenetic and clinical aspects of kidney disease. Congenital reductive nephropathy always arises in the ureteral bud and is determined by two factors, endogenous dysplasia and endogenous obstruction. The nine well-known patterns of disease that may result are described herein. The most important starting points are as follows: (a) A dysplastically disorganized and hence refluxive trigone of the bladder induces, via pyramidal-medullary deficiencies, a defect of the metanephros and thu…

Urothelial tumors of the kidney arise from the urothelium of the renal pelvis. Most of them are transitional cell carcinomas histologically similar to bladder carcinomas. The new staging system emphasizes the role of kidney parenchyma in the spread of the tumor. Homolateral multifocal lesions are frequent, along with bladder lesions, preceding, simultaneous with or subsequent to upper tract tumor.

We report on a case that met all the diagnostic criteria for multilocular renal cyst. Treatment was by conservative surgery. The literature is reviewed and the therapeutic approach advocated for this condition is discussed.
