Addison's disease presenting as acute chest syndrome: case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Addison's disease is due to primary adrenal failure. It is an uncommon condition with equal prevalence in both males and females. The onset of symptoms is gradual and manifestation is non specific, hence diagnosis is easily missed without a high index of suspicion. METHODS: The medical records of a patient who presented with acute chest pain to the cardiac unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital were reviewed. A review of the literature using manual library and Medline search on Addison's disease was also done. RESULT: A 48 years old male presented in our medica

Ultrasound screening in pregnancy: advancing technology, soft markers for fetal chromosomal aberrations, and unacknowledged ethical dilemmas.

Fetal ultrasound screening has become routine practice in many western countries. During the last decade, such screening has led to frequent situations characterised by clinical uncertainty due to the disclosure of soft markers in the unborn child. Soft markers are minor anatomical variations indicating a somewhat increased likelihood that the fetus has a chromosomal aberration, most frequently trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). This paper presents the results of a comprehensive literature search of the National Library of Medicine with emphasis on the chronological development of scientific knowledg

Instruments for assessing medication errors among healthcare professionals: protocol for a COSMIN-based systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Medication errors (MEs) are a major threat to patient safety worldwide. Numerous instruments have been developed internationally to assess MEs and medication safety. However, the measurement properties and methodological quality of these instruments have not yet been systematically evaluated. A comprehensive appraisal of existing instruments may provide evidence-based guidance for selecting appropriate tools in clinical practice, nursing management and research. Therefore, this study aims to systematically review the measurement properties of instruments assessing MEs based on th

Life's Essential 8, Genetic Susceptibility, and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease in Chinese Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease is a chronic condition of the gastrointestinal tract. It is characterised by transmural, granulomatous inflammation that occurs in a discontinuous pattern, with a tendency to form fistulae. The cause is unknown but may depend on interactions between genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and mucosal immunity. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of medical treatments to induce remission in adults with Crohn's disease? What are the effects of surgical intervention

The efficacy and safety of short-acting, full agonist opioids for symptom management of opioid withdrawal.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with opioid use disorder often have undertreated withdrawal while in hospital, leading to high rates of premature discharges. Short-acting, full agonist opioids (SAFAOs) have been proposed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms when provided as adjuncts to opioid agonist therapy (OAT). We aimed to synthesize evidence on the safety and efficacy of SAFAOs. METHODS: We searched the scientific databases MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Web of Science Core Collection, and the Cochrane Library for studies with adults whose opioid withdrawal symptoms were treated with SAFAOs. Religious objections to obstetric practice? A historical study of obstetric anaesthesia in mid-19th century France.

An early administration of anaesthesia for childbirth occurred on 19 January 1847, when Scottish obstetrician James Young Simpson administered diethyl ether to facilitate the delivery of a child to a woman with a deformed pelvis. Simpson advocated for its use to reduce pain both in surgery and in childbirth. Obstetric anaesthesia was controversial for many reasons, and objections came not only from fellow obstetricians, but also from the public and members of the clergy. While James Young Simpson shed light upon religious objections to obstetric anaesthesia, modern scholars have debated whethe

Effect of acupoint stimulation after caesarean section: a protocol for systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Although caesarean sections (CSs) are essential for the management of obstructed labour and other obstetric complications, postoperative pain, delayed recovery and complication risks continue to be significant challenges in perioperative management. Improvements in traditional medications and surgical techniques have helped, yet issues, including medication side effects and extended recovery times, persist. Therefore, it is particularly important to seek non-pharmacological interventions, such as acupoint stimulation, to optimise the perioperative management of CS. The aim of thi
