Screening for the psychological consequences of a major disaster in a developing country: Armero, Colombia.

Seven months following the volcanic eruption that destroyed the small town of Armero, 200 victims were screened for emotional problems with the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, a simple and reliable instrument. Fifty-five percent of the victims were found to be emotionally distressed. Variables associated with the presence of emotional distress included living alone, having lost previous job, feeling not being helped, not knowing date for leaving temporary shelter, being dissatisfied with living arrangements, complaining of non-specific physical symptoms or epigastric pain, and presenting several

The relationship of anger expression to health problems among black Americans in a national survey.

This study examined the relationship between anger expression, other psychosocial measures, and health problems in a nationally representative, cross-sectional sample of 1277 black adults. Subjects indicating a high level of outwardly expressed anger during a period in which they experienced a severe personal problem had a significantly higher number of health problems than their counterparts who expressed low and moderate levels of anger. Anger expression also significantly interacted with a measure of life strain (employment status) to predict health problems. Blacks who were unemployed were

Toward a multi-method approach to assessing the effects of social support.

Two studies were done to assess the direct and stress-buffering effects of social support on psychological symptoms of college students. Three conceptually distinct measures were used to assess different aspects of social support: receipt of supportive transactions, satisfaction with support received, and social support network characteristics. The results indicated a significant direct and stress-buffering effect for support satisfaction in reducing psychological symptomatology. Two measures of support network size were used: number of people who were both a source of supportive and of upsett

Bibliotherapy: an adjunct to care of patients with problems of living.

Bibliotherapy, or the selected use of reading as an adjunct to the treatment of medical and psychological problems, has a long history in the library science literature. However, the use of bibliotherapy by practicing physicians has not been significant. Many patients who see family physicians are candidates for bibliotherapy as adjunctive treatment. In the past five years numerous well-written books that address various patient problems of living have been made available. The authors surveyed a variety of health care specialists in the Denver area to develop a reading list for people with lif

A study of some psychological factors in depressed and non-depressed subjects in a Kenyan setting.

Thirty Kenyan patients (15 consecutive first-ever referrals to the out-patient clinic and 15 consecutive first-ever admissions) of black African origin on chemotherapy for clinical depression (uncomplicated by organic or other psychotic illness) in Nairobi and 40 non-psychiatrically disturbed controls (controlled for race, sex and age) living in and around Nairobi were included in this study. Information was obtained from each subject using a structured questionnaire. It was found that in the consecutive first-ever admissions or referrals females were overrepresented in the patient group and t

Childhood cancer: Parental discord and divorce.

Parents of 191 children who were treated for cancer over a seven-year period completed and returned a questionnaire concerning marital status. Contrary to the prediction of a high divorce rate among these families, the study found a person-year divorce rate of 1.19%. This is slightly lower than the 2.03% person-year divorce rate among married couples with children in the states of Kansas and Missouri. The Arnold sign indicator analysis of the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory was used to measure marital stress in 38 intact couples whose children were treated for cancer. The study sam

The effect of stressful life events on adolescents with depression: the chain mediating role of basic psychological needs and self-esteem.

PURPOSE: Adolescent depression has emerged as a critical global public health concern, with stressful life events identified as key environmental risk factors. However, the underlying psychological mechanisms in clinically diagnosed adolescents remain insufficiently explored. This study aims to examine whether basic psychological needs and self-esteem serve as sequential mediators in the relationship between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 312 adolescents (aged 12–19 years; 68.8% female) diagnosed with depressive disorder were recruited from a ps

Maternal life events, anxiety, social support, and prenatal depression among pregnant women: a cross-sectional study in Yinchuan, China.

While the association between life events and depression has been well-established, the mechanisms linking life events to depression in pregnant women require further exploration. This study aimed to explore the association between maternal life events and depression, with anxiety and social support as potential influencing factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2020 to December 2021 among 1767 pregnant women recruited via convenience sampling from a tertiary hospital in Yinchuan, China. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Life Events Scale f

[The Bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and traumatic life events : Mechanisms and therapeutic implications].

There is a close bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and psychological trauma disorders, which frequently results in more intense suffering and greater impairment for those affected. This article elucidates the intricate interrelationships between chronic pain, early childhood stress, and traumatic experiences as well as the underlying neurobiological, neuroimmunological and psychosocial mechanisms. Early childhood trauma, such as abuse or neglect, has a significant impact on individuals during particularly vulnerable phases of development, leading to long-lasting changes at variou

Drinking motives link positive and negative life events to problematic alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Stressful life events are associated with problematic drinking, and alcohol misuse has been exacerbated during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. While coping motives may account for this association, positive life events (PLEs) and enhancement motives are understudied. To address these gaps, we examined the associations of history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), negative life events (NLEs), and PLEs with problematic alcohol use and tested coping and enhancement motives as mediators. METHODS: The sample included baseline and follow-up data from 241 participants enrolled

A behavioral choice analysis of the role of life events during early nonabstinent natural recovery from alcohol use disorder.

Prior research supported a behavioral choice analysis of the role of life events in posttreatment drinking among abstinence-seeking inpatients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). This study investigated the generality of those relationships among persons attempting "natural" recovery involving moderation drinking. We had two hypotheses: (1) The likelihood of drinking after an event would be related to the degree of alcohol-related disruption in the life-health area of the event. (2) Event-related drinking episodes would be quantitatively greater than event-unrelated episodes. Participants (N = 83

The moderating effect of recent positive and negative life events on the impact of early life stress on mental wellbeing and distress.

Early life stress (ELS) significantly influences mental health in later stages of life. Yet it is unclear whether recent life events lessen or intensify the effects of ELS on present wellbeing and distress. We addressed this question in 1064 healthy community adults with a normative range of wellbeing and distress. We tested whether recent daily life events (DLE), occurring in the 12 months prior to assessment, moderated the association between effects of past ELS on present wellbeing and distress. Principal components analysis was first used on both ELS and DLE to determine the event types lo

Recent stressful life events and identity development in emerging adults: An examination of within-person effects.

OBJECTIVE: To examine longitudinal associations among stressful life events and identity processess in emerging adults while accounting for within-person and between-person effects. BACKGROUND: Theoretical perspectives suggest that stressful life events may impact one's identity (i.e., coherent sense of self), but few studies have considered how changes in stressful life events are associated with changes within an individual's identity development over time (within-person effects). METHODS: Recent stressful life events (i.e., academic problems, friendship problems, romantic problems, and ti

Metacognition as a Mediator for Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Following Childhood Stressful Life Events: An Examination of the Construct Validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire-Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Both cognitive and metacognitive theories implicate posttraumatic metacognition as an important factor in the maintenance of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following stressful life events (SLEs). The Metacognitions Questionnaire-posttraumatic stress disorder (MCQ-PTSD; Wells, 2009) was previously developed to assess for metacognitions specific to SLEs and resulting PTSS. This study aimed to examine the construct validity of this measure in the context of childhood SLEs specifically. First, we confirmed the factor structure underlying the MCQ-PTSD in our sample. We then assessed whether t

Can apparently transient life events trigger long-term lower urinary tract symptoms?

INTRODUCTION: One-time life events such as neurological injury can result in lifelong lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). However, it is unclear whether an apparently transient life event can also trigger long-term LUTS. This review examines the possibility of an association and hypothesizes the pathogenesis. METHODS: A pubmed search was conducted using the MeSH words "life change events," "child abuse," or "stress disorders, Posttraumatic", and LUTS. Additional manuscripts were identified by a hand and citation search. RESULTS: Long-term LUTS was noted following temporally remote childhood…

Growing Older in the Shadow of Childhood Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse: Women's Reflections on Parenthood Experiences Throughout the Life Course.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The long-term effect of intrafamilial sexual abuse for the survivors' parenting rarely focuses on older women who are mothers of adult children. The aim of this study was to explore the parenthood experiences of aging women survivors of intrafamilial sexual abuse, using the life course perspective as a conceptual framework. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the narratives of 19 older women survivors of intrafamilial sexual abuse. RESULTS: The narratives revealed 4 themes: (a) "How did I raise those kids? I reall

Adjusting Identities When Times Change: The Role of Self-Compassion.

Adjusting identity standards may be preferable to relentless pursuit or abandonment of an identity when facing an identity-challenging life transition. Self-compassion (SC) can help people adjust to challenges. The authors examined whether SC was associated with identity adjustment, exercise, and the moderating effect of identity-behavior discrepancy in 279 women exercisers who reported reduced exercise in motherhood. Participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale and reported the extent of and reflected on their identity discrepant behavior (reduced exercise). Reactions to discrepancy (acce

Negative and positive life events and their relation to substance and behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that negative life events (LEs) may be connected to the development and maintenance of addictions. However, few studies have examined the potential relationship between positive events and addictive disorders, and even fewer studies evaluated the subjective perception of LEs that may underlie these relationships. Importantly, addictive disorders include both substance-related and behavioral addictions, but the relative relationship of each type of addiction with LEs remains unclear. METHODS: The present study compared 212 participants suffering from an addiction
