Transferring patients home to die from intensive care units: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial proportion of patients spend their final days in intensive care units (ICUs), where ICU nurses are tasked with providing end-of-life care in critical situations. When patients express a preference to spend their final days at home, direct discharge from the ICU may be appropriate. However, this process presents significant risks and complexities. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this review were to investigate the prevalence of transfer from ICUs to home and to explore and summarise known facilitators and barriers to this process, as well as its impacts on patients, familie

From Encapsulation to Food Delivery: Application-Driven Design of Functional Ingredients Using Encapsulation and Coating Approaches for Future Food Systems.

Encapsulation and coating approaches have become important tools in modern food systems for improving the stability, functionality, sensory quality, processability, and controlled delivery of bioactive and sensitive food ingredients. Their widespread adoption has enabled the incorporation of functional compounds into diverse food products while enhancing product quality, shelf life, and manufacturing performance. However, successful implementation depends not only on the encapsulation or coating strategy itself but also on the interactions among ingredient properties, carrier materials, food m

[Medical and economic reflections on Restore and Itrel neurostimulation systems for neuropathic pain treatment].

In 2007, four patients where implanted with the Restore neurostimulation system for intractable chronic leg pain at the Poitiers Hospital. The potential for improving the patients' quality of life and medical-economic concerns motivated this choice for these highly selected patients. In this paper, we propose brief clinical case reports and discuss the reasons for choosing this new rechargeable system, even though it was initially more expensive than the standard neurostimulation system (Itrel 3). All patients receiving implants declared that they were very satisfied with the quality of stimul

Renovating Neural Networks With Viral-Mediated Gene Transfer From A Tissue Contacting Matrix Mimic.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's Disease (HD) have a significant impact on healthcare accessibility and costs. A fatal genetic condition, characterized by the progressive loss of striatal neurons, HD is hindered by the lack of endogenous repair in the adult brain. Recent efforts toward protecting neural circuits through neurotrophic support using brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have been suboptimal due to the protein's short half-life and limited diffusion. Addressing this, adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) can be employed as a delivery tool to spatially transduce ce

How it feels to be a dairy farmer: A cross-sectional survey of farm management and well-being of dairy farmers in Western Canada and Ontario.

Dairy farming is widely recognized as a physically and psychologically demanding profession, yet limited quantitative evidence describes the well-being of Canadian dairy producers. This exploratory, hypothesis-generating, cross-sectional study investigated univariable associations between farm management factors-including housing systems, milking technologies, daily responsibilities, and social environments-and the physical, mental, and social well-being of 115 dairy farmers in Western Canada and Ontario. The survey collected detailed information on demographics, work responsibilities, work-li

"What if I got rejected by the girl? I would rather stop the pills": barriers and facilitators of adherence to antiretroviral therapy for emerging adults aged 18-29 living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

Emerging adults aged 18-29 have high rates of viral non-suppression, and poorer adherence to ART when compared to older adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 emerging adults in Zimbabwe who had a recent history of viral non-suppression, to explore barriers and facilitators of adherence to ART. Interviews were coded using inductive thematic analysis. The mean age of participants was 23, 65% were male, and 79% reported acquiring HIV at birth. Twelve barriers to adherence were identified. Hiding HIV status due to the possible negative consequences of disclosure had a significa

Compensating for anterograde amnesia: a new training method that capitalizes on emerging smartphone technologies.

Following a neuropathological event, individuals left with moderate-to-severe memory impairment are unable to reliably form new memories. The most common challenges involve the capacity to perform a task in the future and to consciously recall a recent event. Disruption of these memory processes leaves the individual trapped in the present, unable to stay on track, and alienated from ongoing events. Memory research has demonstrated that implicit memory is often preserved despite severe explicit memory impairment and that preserved memory systems can provide avenues for acquiring new skills and

Coproduction Without Youth? Closing the Participation Gap in Digital Mental Health Research.

Young people are among the most intensive users of digital and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)-enabled mental health tools, yet they remain underrepresented in the research and design processes that shape these technologies. Although participatory approaches such as co-design and patient and public involvement are widely endorsed as best practices, youth involvement in digital youth mental health (DYMH) research is often inconsistent, superficial, or limited to late-stage consultation. This participation gap risks producing interventions that are misaligned with young people's lived

Association of marital and parental status with stress, support, adherence, and quality of life among breast cancer women.

BACKGROUNDS: Breast cancer presents multifaceted challenges that extend beyond physical illness, profoundly influencing patients' psychological well-being, treatment adherence, and social relationships. Marital and parental status further affect these experiences by influencing coping capacity, emotional stability, and perceived support systems. This study aimed to assess how marital and parental status influence the lives of women with breast cancer, particularly their psychological well-being, support, treatment adherence, and overall quality of life (QoL). METHODS: This cross-sectional stu

Enhancing linkage to HIV care in the "Universal Test and Treat" era: Barriers and enablers to HIV care among adults in a high HIV burdened district in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Ending AIDS by 2030 would depend on how successful health systems are in linking people living with HIV (PLHIV) into care. The World Health Organization recommended the 'Universal Test and Treat' (UTT) strategy - initiating all individuals testing positive on antiretroviral therapy (ART) irrespective of their CD4 count and clinical staging. This study aimed to explore the enablers and barriers to linkage to HIV care among adults with a new HIV diagnosis in a high-HIV prevalent rural district in South Africa. A qualitative study was undertaken to explore patients' perceptions of enablers and ba

Research Gaps and Priorities for aHUS in the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC): Findings from a Payer-Focused Expert Meeting.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare, life-threatening complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) associated with high morbidity, mortality, and substantial healthcare resource utilization (HCRU). Although complement inhibitors such as eculizumab and ravulizumab have dramatically improved outcomes, aHUS continues to impose significant economic and operational burden on healthcare systems. In the Gulf region, payers and health systems face increasing pressures driven by rising costs, delayed diagnosis, fragmented access, and limited real-world evidence necessary for inf
