Nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) act independently as well as cooperatively to induce neuronal death in acute neurological disorders. Inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and inhibition of lipid peroxidation induced by ROS have both been proposed as neuroprotective strategies in stroke and trauma. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether oxidative stress is associated with human uterine cervicitis and uterine myoma.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We measured lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in plasma and erythrocytes of cervicitis patients and myoma patients in comparison with matched controls. The effects of dietary ascorbic acid on plasma lipoprotein and liver lipid peroxide concentrations were examined using ODS od/od rats with a genetic defect in the ability to synthesize ascorbic acid. Content of individual phospholipids, gangliosides and lipid peroxidation were studied in liver tissue homogenates of rats with hepatitis caused by CCl4 or heliotrine. In all the cases studied the rate of lipid peroxidation was distinctly increased, while content of sphingomyelin was decreased and that of phosphatic acid--increased; concentration of some gangliosides was altered. Activation of lipid peroxidation appears to induce the enzymatic systems involved in degradation of phospholipids and gangliosides in liver tissue of rats with toxic hepatitis.

In this paper are reported the results of a study on the protective effect of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, 0.5mg/100g) against lipid peroxidation injury during traumatic shock in rats. Cardiac and lung tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in TRH group were lower than those in normal saline (NS) group (P less than 0.05) 1 hr after shock. Microsomes were prepared from livers of malignant hyperthermia susceptible (MHS) or resistant (MHR) pigs. Status of xanthine oxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and lipid peroxidation, the enzymes metabolizing reactive oxygen intermediates in liver, lungs and spleen of M. natalensis during D. viteae infection was investigated. Hepatocytes isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to carbon tetrachloride together with various concentrations of trichloroethylene over a 40-fold range. Dynamics of experimental acetate gastric ulcer healing and lipid peroxidation were studied in rat blood and gastric tissues after treatment with methyluracil. The drug was shown to stimulate reparation and to inhibit lipid peroxidation. The antiulcerogenous effects of methyluracil appear to involve the antioxidative mechanisms.

In the present studies, rats are fed with four different kinds of diet; (i) normal diet, (ii) B2-deficient diet, (iii) B2-tetrabutyrate added normal diet, and (iv) B2-tetrabutyrate added B2-deficient diet.
